Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I stopped by the Mo-town Obama office this evening but they were all out of t-shirts. Did you buy them all? Lauren gave me one of those awesome Let’s Go Change the World stickers.

I’m going to check out the Fairmont office tomorrow before canvassing some more in Harrison county and maybe stop by the Beckley office on the way home.

Don’t you think it would have helped if he’d spent a little more time in the state? I had a couple people ask me that today and the staff at the C-burg office said they’ve been hearing it a lot. Seems like visits to Morgantown and Wheeling might have made a difference.

Obama will be in Charleston tomorrow, but yeah, I’m surprised he didn’t come into the state earlier this weekend. I guess he’s trying to max out delegates and the popular vote in OR to forestall Clinton’s hypothesized popular vote gambit.

    I’m on a downer tonight.

A couple I know who was originally for Edwards (and had at one point commented “Not her” during a discussion of Women presidents) apparently recently gave just under $500 to Hillary’s campaign.

I knew they were in the bag for Hillary already as they’d commented how much they felt Obama lack of experience was “dangerous”. It was thrashed out for a while and it was obvious no-one was moving — Rev. Wright was a huge deal whereas Hillary’s lies about Tuzla or Kyle-Lieberman votes didn’t matter (and her AUMF vote was a tool to make them comply, not a vote for war…), so I’ve tried hard to just not discuss the presidential campaign with them but man… for some reason, the donation really bothers me.

We’re talking about solid long-time Democrats here who get off their collective asses and go out and do stuff, be it precinct walking, phone banking, the works.

At this point, I dare not talk to them about November. I think they’ll vote for any Dem, but I’ve gotten to the point that I’m wondering some…

I’m new here, loving the kick-ass posts and the vociferous comments. That was a hilarious hockey post, John, and your meaning was totally clear. We Canadians have a couple different reflex reactions to when Americans mention us. One is “They mentioned us! They mentioned us!” The other is to read in some nonexistent dogwhistle slight and then take offense at it. We’re sensitive that way. Must be all the arugula we grow up here.

    Conservatively Liberal

    May 11, 2008 at 10:34 pm

While I was recently in Spokane, I dropped in to visit our youngest sister. She is a long time conservative, and has faithfully voted Republican in every single election. We don’t see each other often, and we rarely talk politics as she is at the opposite end of the political spectrum from the rest of the siblings.

I decided to ask her who she is voting for this fall, and I expected to hear ‘McCain’ without hesitation. Instead, she looked at me real strangely for a few seconds, then she said ‘I am going to vote for who I want to, and if I can’t then I am sitting out my first election’. Before I could process that, she said “Obama” and looked at me like a lab specimen she was evaluating.

I said “So am I’, and we both started laughing. She seriously thought I was going to vote for Clinton, and I thought she would vote for McCain. We were both wrong…lol! We sat and talked for over an hour about Obama, Hillary and barely mentioned McCain. She said that her party abandoned her and other old time conservatives, and ‘it will be a cold day in hell’ before she ever votes Republican again.

She hit on all of the crap that Hillary has been dishing out, and she is on top of everything that relates to Obama. She has always been one of those people who likes detail, which seemed to run counter to the usual Republican habit of liking to be spoon fed talking points. She is a republican who thinks for herself, and she seems to have followed a similar path ‘out of the wilderness’ as John here has. I told her about John and BJ, and I hope she drops in on us.

If Obama can win over my sister (albeit with the help of the self-destruction of the right), I am sure that there are many other Republicans out there who will do likewise.

Bill missed the Party Unity Memo:

Per ABC News’ Sarah Amos, this is what the 42nd president of the United States said Friday in Ripley, W.Va.:

“Hillary is in this race because of people like you and places like this and no matter what they say,” Clinton said. “And no matter how much fun they make of your support of her and the fact that working people all over America have stuck with her, she thinks you’re as smart as they are. She thinks you’ve got as much right to have your say as anybody else. And, you know, they make a lot of fun of me because I like to campaign in places like this, they say I have been exiled to rural America, as if that was a problem. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be here than listening to that stuff I have to hear on television, I’d rather be with you. There is a simple reason: You need a president a lot more than those people telling you not to vote for her.”

    In Madison, W.Va.:

“It is very interesting, from the very beginning of this race there has been a sharp divide in the vote — the people who need a president, who need to turn the economy around, who need to restore the middle class, who need to give poor people a chance to work their way into the middle class, who need to give our children a better future, who need to restore our standing in the world and the war in Iraq, but do it in a way that rebuilds our military and stands up for America’s security and standing around the world — they have been for her from the get-go.”

Yeah, Obama does seem to have real cross-over appear.

I was involved in voter registration last summer, and a lot of Republicans would stop by and chat. Some were obnoxious but most were sincere in their views — even managed to reregister a few as Dems.

Several opined the same view — that they were sick of Bush, that they weren’t enthused about any of their candidates. They were looking at the likely Democratic contenders. Almost all added that they would definitely vote AGAINST Hillary.

I also found it interesting that several were enthusiastic about John Edwards.

I just don’t understand the “experience” mojo Hillary seems to have garnered. Since when is being the spouse of a politician the same as being the politican? Isn’t her running for President just the third election she’s ever been in, and her first, when she entered the Senate was a cakewalk against a weak GOP candidate? If relationship or proximity to an elected official is qualifying mojo the Goopers would have been nagging Barbara Bush to run instead of McCain.

    Splitting Image

    May 11, 2008 at 11:57 pm

“And yet we constantly see the meme from Obama supporters that Hillary is really a Republican, that she’ll be McCain’s running mate, or that Hillary supporters will vote for McCain.”

There is nothing inconsistent about this. The Republican party is split in two at the moment. Of the 50% of the country who voted Republican in the last two elections, three-fifths still worship the ground Bush walks on, and the others are all in various stages of disillusionment and anger at the status quo.

Obama has been aiming at the latter group from day one. Clinton has been increasingly tailoring her message to the ones still supporting Bush, and to the Democrats who have been willing to cross party lines to join them.

The key factor is Clinton’s support of McCain. Many of the Republicans who are opposed to the Bush circle used to like McCain when he seemed to be giving them a voice, but the more he hitched his wagon to Bush and Cheney, the less popular he has been with them. Ron Paul took a lot of their votes and their money this year because he seemed to be the only genuine maverick. Huckabee’s support also boomed when he criticized the Bush crowd for ignoring their reliable evangelical voters.

Long story short, Clinton has been embracing McCain’s supporters (including Democrats who like him) and Obama has been embracing his opponents.

Since McCain is the Republican nominee, which policy do you suppose makes more sense?

  36. 36.

    El Doh

    May 12, 2008 at 12:11 am

It’s arguable that the Republicans are split into more than two pieces — the Evangelical wing seems to be somewhat separate from the Neo-con wing and the Moderate wing.

Perhaps they’re finally realizing they’ve been played for suckers with promises on abortion, etc. but little real action.

I’ve always wondered if Roe Vs Wade would ever be overturned for that very reason — it’s too good of a fund raising/GOTV issue to kill it.

I’ve always figured they’d keep it, then chip away at it so while abortion remained technically legal, it became practically impossible in most cases and states.

That allows them to say “see, we’re making progress!” while sitll being able to rant about “baby-murdering-liberals!”

California voters would change their February primary vote for Hillary Clinton to a vote for Barack Obama if the vote were held again, according to an exclusive poll commissioned by CBS 5.

While voters in the California Democratic Presidential Primary backed Clinton by a 10-point margin, a new SurveyUSA poll shows that if given the chance to vote again, Californians would choose Barack Obama by a 6-point margin, 49%-43%.

Old habits seem to be hard to break. Just reading through this comment thread, though, I’ve noticed that the Clinton-bashing has lost a lot of its heat, and most everybody here seems to just be shaking their head in dismayed amazement at her tactics.

PEOPLE: If people vote for Clinton in the primaries (etc), IT DOES NOT IN AND OF ITSELF MEAN THAT THEY WON’T VOTE FOR OBAMA (I.E., THE DEMOCRAT) IN THE GENERAL.

Wrong again. I don’t root for any one particular team at the moment. I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for Toronto and Boston, as my great-uncle Bill played for the Toronto St. Pat’s in 1922 (won the Cup too, thank you very much), and then for the Bruins. But other than that, I’m more emotionally invested in the QMJHL league.

    Because:

    1) She is running like a Republican, although obviously she is a Democrat (and not in name only like Lieberman)

    2) She will not be McCain’s running mate, but sadly most people seem to think she’ll do anything to get back in the WH

    3) Because a majority of Hillary supporters keep telling pollsters that they will vote for McCain, though I think come November few will

Ditto your “yeah.” This is just brutal for many of us who chose to live in the beautiful state of WV. After the 2004 election, I found myself walking around my dominantly Democratic county that went over 65% for Bush, and processing that 2 out of 3 people I saw voted manifestly against their individual interests, their family’s interests, their community’s interests, and the nation’s interests, because of stupid, made up rethuglican wedge issues like guns.

And now they are about to do it in teh dem primary over race. By better than 2 to 1. Against the presumptive nominee in favor of a candidate they would vote against in the fall – because of guns, and abortion, and whatever.

One thing that doesn’t get mentioned enough is West Virginia’s care and support for autistics. My son is autistic so I know a bit about the subject. The Autism Training Center at Marshall University does some great work in helping autistics to become functioning members of society.

Outside of the West (Obama won whites in CA, WA, ID, UT, CO, KS, etc) Obama has not fared well with white voters. (Out West, Obama has fared poorly with Latinos.) This is not an Appalachia issue, as some have suggested.

It’s sad West Virginia has a bad reputation (or gets a bad rap). They seceded from Virginia to rejoin the Union during the Civil War.

I’ve always wondered if Roe Vs Wade would ever be overturned

I don’t think it will ever be overturned. During Bush’s first term there was a Republican president with sky-high approval ratings, a Republican-controlled House and Senate, and a Republican-controlled Supreme Court. If they didn’t overturn it then, when are they going to? It’s a stick to beat up Democrats with. If they ban abortion they can’t use the stick, and banning abortion would energize liberals the same way Roe vs. Wade did conservatives.

Their rule about posting limits is rather interesting, especially how it’s enforced. It’s just another tool to ban dissenting voices, guess it’s good if you don’t want to debate with people you don’t agree with but not so much if you want an open debate.

I know a number of good Dems in WV who will be voting for Hillary tomorrow, and who will vote for Obama in the fall. They are deeply concerned about Obama’s chances in the fall based on their life experiences with people in this region – and they desperately want a Dem win in November.

I do agree with them about Obama winning WV in the GE; he won’t. I disagree that his inability to win in WV means he can’t win the election. But the reality is that either Obama or Hillary (even before she went crazy) as our nominee is new electoral ground and we don’t know what will happen.

It doesn’t surprise me that so many Edwards’ supporters have gone over the moon for Hillary. After Edwards dropped out, she suddenly became a born again populist. What I don’t understand is why they think she means it? The Clinton’s have always been pro-business.

Hillary was never a primary option for me. Far too much money from Wall St., health insurance lobbyists, the Murdoch fundraiser, plus AUMF, plus Kyl-Lieberman.

I wasn’t overjoyed with some of his decisions, like the liquified coal bill, but he was far less objectionable.

Rather sad in a year that I kept reading about how strong the Democratic field was, I ended up picking the candidate whose politics I disliked the least.
