Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

“But what about the lurkers?”

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

This blog will pay for itself.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Let there be snark.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

The willow is too close to the house.

In my day, never was longer.

Everybody saw this coming.

A well-deserved Pulitzer

I’m very happy to see this:

Times reporter David Barstow won the Investigative prize for his report on the relationship between the Pentagon and TV military analysts.

Yeah, Jon Mecham won one this year too and Tom Friedman has won a total of three in his career, so the award is a bit of a joke. But it’s good to see Barstow’s important — and widely ignored within the mainstream media — work get its due.

Also congrats to Eugene Robinson on his win as well.

I love that Barstow won. And I am tickled to see that Eugene Robinson won for commentary. I have a little bit of a crush on Gene. He has a foxy twinkle in his eye that I find hot. And he always laughs at the teabagging jokes, unconcerned that people might not think he’s “serious” because of it.

Me too, that was a fantastic series.
Eugene Robinson won for commentary which is good. The only sane person on the WaPo line up (except for Dionne)

I notice that despite all the pimping Brian Williams did for her, Peggy Noonan is once again Pulitzer prizeless.

I’m not incredibly keen on him, but he’s one of the best of a bad lot.

    It’s a good choice.

Now if only they’d nominated someone interesting in poetry this year. Merwin? Bidart? Ruth Stone’s New and Selected? Bah.

Yes, but if you look at what he won them for, the Pulitzer gets a bit of its luster back. Friedman wasn’t yammering on about how the world is flat and cell phones are magic when he picked up awards for covering the Sabra and Shatila massacre or the First Palestinian Intifada.

And Meacham picked up his Pultizer for writing about Andrew Jackson. That’s about as far as you can get from his commentary on current events.

I wouldn’t piss on the Pultizer too hard.

Bummer about that smarmy sycophant Jon Meacham. Next time he appears with Charlie Rose, Rose will drool even more profusely over him

Kudos to David Barstow, Eugene Robinson and Holland Cotter.

Yeah, I know. But I’ve got the sneaking suspicion that he was just repeating things his cab driver told him about the events.

Can we give an “anti-Pulitzer” to the talking heads at all the major news networks who who went to extraordinary lengths to ignore or deny the significance of Barstow’s piece?

How about giving the top anchors of any network who used the Pentagon flacks without disclosure, and without a “mea culpa” following Barstow’s article, a five-year ban from ever receiving a Pulitzer themselves?

There should be some consequence for willingly and probably knowingly becoming part of the Pentagon propoganda machine. And the fastest way for accountability could end up being through the egos of the prima donnas.

Same segment, Corner Stone. What was great about the “companion” bit was the way his mouth started forming the word “bitch” but then a million gun-shy Countdown viewers hit him with psychic rays of “please don’t make us relive the primary.”

Yeah, I know. But I’ve got the sneaking suspicion that he was just repeating things his cab driver told him about the events.

Now you’re just being churlish. You may not like the globalist-happy talk coming from Friedman these days (and neither do I), and he seems to phone it in more often than not, but read “From Beirut to Jerusalem” and tell me that isn’t the work of a crackerjack reporter who, in many cases, risked his well-being to get the story.

I got no problem with Friedman winning the pullitzer but they shoulda made him wait a perpetual six months to receive it.

    Now you’re just being churlish.

I’m really not. His column is so bad it makes me hard to think he could have been a good reporter. You’ve read his books and I haven’t, so I will happily surrender to you in this argument. But you can see where I’m coming from, right?

Glenn Greenwald asks a very good question.

Other than David Barstow’s, has there ever been a Pulitzer-Prize-winning investigation never mentioned on the TV? http://tinyurl.com/dbqmvm

Yeah, he’s technically WaPo Online vs the print edition, but still. . .

His column is so bad it makes me hard to think he could have been a good reporter.

I don’t expect you to read the books, but here is the story that won him his first Pulitzer, in 1982. It is spare and unremitting and pulls no punches in blaming Israel for the massacre. Maybe that reporter is long gone, but he existed, once. Give it a read when you have some time. Here’s just a small part:

From the moment they entered the camp, witnesses said, the militiamen made no apparent effort to distinguish between Palestinians and Lebanese, let alone between men, women and children.

According to Col. Marcel Prince, the Lebanese Army Surgeon General, as well as medical workers, those people whose bodies were found toward the southern entrance of Shatila were killed at random while other appeared to have been lined up against walls and shot.

In other cases, what appeared to be entire families had been slain as they sat at the dinner table. Others were found dead in their nightclothes, apparently suprised by the militamen who burst in on them Thursday evening.

Some people were found with their throats slit. Others had been mutilated with some kind of heavy blade, perhaps axes.
