I think I’m gonna skip the thread and just come back in a few hours to see if there’s a post titled “;alkjsdfoa8uijfnjal;ksd” from John passing out on his keyboard.
The Dangerman
Well, shit, if these are 80’s and games, I have to open with the closing number at the 84 Olympics (best traffic in Los Angeles EVER; please bring the games back):

Off topic, but to go full-circle on Bill Withers, I weep at what he has to say these days.

While much of the 80s was cringe-worthy, some of it was fantastic.

Looks like Cartman is Glenn Beck in the new South Park.

@Genine:
Nice!

@General Winfield Stuck:
Thanks! I’m glad you like it.

No 80s/90s thread is complete without some Billy.

@Seebach: Kill Smurfs!
Cartman does a pretty convincing Glenn Beck, unsurprisingly.
Fulcanelli
Winter’s almost here…
Powder Skiing to Paul Oakenfold’s “Transport” (1998)
…gorgeous scenery. Enjoy.

Talking Heads: This Must be the Place
JenJen
@Curtis: That was one of my favorite videos back in the day! It’s aged well, too.
While we’re on performers named Billy…

The Clash Charlie Don’t Surf
Also, this line from a movie review cracked me up:
Midnight Marauder
The Gap Band – You Dropped A Bomb On Me
+15
Thadeus Horne
@Genine: Thanks, Genine. you took me back so far. And you made me sad. we had it going our direction then. but we all got complacent and smug and we let it drift away. damn dumb hippies.
Ash Can
I’m still burned out from the last 80’s throwdown. I’m off to bed. Once again, Happy Veterans’ Day to you, John. Over and out.
Chuck Butcher
Black and Blue Memory Motel
Curtis
@Moonbatting Average: Excellent!
@JenJen: It’s def a good tune. And Squier busted out some great ones.
And this vid, well, most of the footage was shot in the 80s (late 70s?) and 90s.

Genine
@Thadeus Horne:
I don’t think it drifted away. It may seem that way, but things are definitely changing. I think they’re changing for the positive (in the long run). We just have to get through tough stuff.
Rain storms are followed by rainbows.
hamletta
I can’t pick something from the ’80s. There’s so much! I have a good 12 feet of vinyl, since I worked in the music bidness, and there was so much great stuff amid the fake drums and crapola.
But I’ve always wondered about Donnie Darko as a Christ figure. I just saw the film on cable, and I’ve heard the director’s cut ruined everything and killed kittens.
In one scene, he’s standing in front of a theatre showing The Last Temptation of Christ, and I have to think it’s intentional. It wasn’t a super-wide release.
I was editing a scrubby little paper in the pre-alt-weekly days, and we devoted a whole issue to the controversy and how nobody in Nashville would get to see it. We had a picture of a marquee proudly proclaiming “Will never show ‘Temptation'” under their list of offerings.
We had to print in a little town near the Alabama border, because our publisher (the other guy who ran the paper) had outstanding bills with every printer in town.
He was afraid the rubes would refuse to print the issue, and I insisted they weren’t rubes, they were small-town journalists; and furthermore, we were paying cash.
I was right. Nobody said a thing.
Ah! Blacking negatives! How I miss you!
Corner Stone
@Midnight Marauder: Ummm, +15 what?
If I may be so bold.

Talking Heads: This Must be the Place
naive melody ftw
JenJen
@Midnight Marauder: This came on at a pizza-and-beer joint I was at earlier in the week. It was all I could do to not jump on the table and start shakin’ dat ass!
Corner Stone
@MBSS: I’ve lost all respect for you.
MBSS
@Corner Stone:
it’s inevitable.
Midnight Marauder
@Corner Stone:
Hey, I’m just trying to keep pace with PsiFighter37’s +14 from earlier. I still feel like I’m grossly behind.
+17 (there’s also some mar-i-ju-ana in there, I should admit. I don’t even what to know what kind of math I would have to get into with that.)
Midnight Marauder
@JenJen:
One of my all-time favorite “let’s get this party started, bitches!” songs. How can you not dance to when that funk starts to run wild?

@freelancer:
Very nice.

If anyone is still awake…America’s favorite crazy lady Orly Taitz held her previously announced “massive protests” against O’Reilly and Fox News in New York City today. Crowd estimates are as high as 20.
Yup. Twenty people.

@Beauzeaux:
I’m still awake but I’m a left coaster +0, the very right side of PST
Thadeus Horne
@Genine: I sure hope you’re right. I don’t want to think we just fucked it away. I’ve tried to keep to the correct way, but I think we’ve strayed from what the goal was. I try to keep that feeling in my heart, but it’s getting harder all the time.
MattR
One from the 80’s: Marvin Gaye doing the National Anthem
One from the 90’s: The Toadies – Possum Kingdom
Steeplejack
@hamletta:
I am not a big fan of director’s cuts in general, but Donny Darko is one where the director’s-cut version did actual harm to the movie. It’s a great movie; just get the regular version.
I regret somewhat that I came late to this thread and missed the music throwdown, but I don’t know that I would have had the energy tonight to go all in. That said, I put together a bunch of ’80s music for my brother’s birthday a few weeks ago, and this is the song that surprised me the most with its staying power. Yes, it’s cheesy Spandau Ballet–but fine aged cheddar cheesy Spandau Ballet. “Only When You Leave.”
Steeplejack
P.S. I love the song “Mad World” that Cole quoted at the top, but this is a much better video for it.
Midnight Marauder
Harvey Danger – Save It For Later

I thought about posting some Nina Hagen, but there is only so much weirdness the universe can take in one night.

How about the Digable Planets singing for abortion rights? La Femme Fetal Damn shame that you can’t tell this song was written 15 years ago and not last week.
Joel
closing the second decade in this scrum, windowlicker.
Joel
@Joel: really, the key is to fast forward to the end-ish ~4minutes or so. completely bizarre, frightening and a pretty incredible parody of gangsta rap videos…
JenJen
@Midnight Marauder: I don’t know if it’s just your song selections or the fact that I am now JenJen +7, but damn, you got my party started!
I adore English Beat, but never heard that version… it’s terrific, and surprising from that band as I always thought they were a one-hit wonder with “Flagpole Sitta.” (From the 90’s, so it counts! Cool fan vid too.)
And while I’m at it, one of my fave 90’s songs, from one of my musical heroes, Mike Doughty (as Soul Coughing) — Super Bon Bon!

@R-Jud: Not necessarily. From what I’ve seen, some of the most enjoyable, debauched threads tend to take place at the most ungodly hours. Of course, I always miss them, being on Atlantic Standard Time.

@RedKitten:
Fixed that for you.

I’ve been checking the site and don’t even see that they’ve made the Final Four decision yet. What did youu see?
I’m going to be purely pissed if one of those poms gets in and Bitsy doesn’t . . . .
redbeardjim
You know, sometimes you just need a sax solo.
And to get the dance floor jumpin’, you can’t beat Rob Base.
MikeJ
Mozart, Commissioner James Gordon (a pom), Dr. Papidies, and Tuffy got in. No Bitsy.
Boooo!
Genine
@Thadeus Horne:
I’m a firm believer in that it all works out in the end. Yeah, sometimes (or a lot of the time) it looks like it won’t. But, in my experience, something good comes out.

Here’s one from the 80s for you:
Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners.
I was 13 — girls wearing nothing but overalls.
Or, Centerfold by the J. Geils Band. I thought that video was a better invention than the lightbulb.
Alien-Radio
@Fulcanelli:
Tranceport was a Dj comp, Oakenfold made very little of the music on it and the track you linked to is El nino by Agnelli and Nelson.

I am crazy in love with Jena Malone, she is my favorite actress ever.
