Went to the grocery store, and with the combination of the rush to stock up on supplies and the absence of deliveries made the shelves so bare it looked like a early 80’s East German market or some post-apocalyptic video game. No zombies got me, though.
As a side note, this is the first winter I have had a car that had seat warmers, and maybe I am getting old, but I’m giving that concept a definite THUMBS UP. Another thing- exactly how bad of a driver do you have to be to get stuck in the snow in a Subaru wagon? Things are just tanks.
At any rate, go Steelers.

OT: A nomination for Clown Shoes: on p.25 of today’s NYT, there’s an 1-page ad beginning:
It then complains that Time Warner cable has said that it’s increasing rates to permit it to continue offering FOX while “rak[ing] in BILLIONS IN PROFITS”. The ad then directs you to KeepFOXon.com . Donning my anti-malware suits (yeah, multiple layers), I visited that site, and noticed right off that it says “(c) 2009 Fox Networks Group, Inc.”
I just love astroturf wingnut sockialist poutrage.

Many of the morons who drive 4wd vehicles assume that since it will go thru anything that it will stop in anything. I watched the driver of an expensive SUV have a screaming meltdown because he couldn’t stop for someone trying to back into a parking spot last week.

Nothing worse than the dawning realization that I haven’t gone food shopping in awhile and I need to go because I have no food at all in the house with a storm coming. Especially since things like eggs, milk, water, etc are always cleaned out.
Ugh!!! People are fucking morons when it comes to this stuff. What are the chances you are going to be stuck in your house for three plus weeks and need all those supplies? Almost non-existent. So my normal bachelor shopping trip to the grocery store turns from a 20 minute trip to a 2-3 hour trip to hell.

I love my seat warmers. I used to drive a Saab that had them. The thing was, they were either ON or OFF. No warm, warmer, warmest. Hated it.
I have an Audi A4 now, and they have levels of warmth on all seats. I really love that – even here in Atlanta it can be pretty chilly in the morning. Like almost 33° ;-)
SiubhanDuinne
Seat warmers are teh awesome. Here in Jawja I can’t really justify them for, let’s face it, maybe two dozen days a year max. But believe me, once I retire and move to cooler climes, that will be a feature I will be looking for.
(BTW I really hate that the automatic spell corrector on the BlackBerry doesn’t like me to spell “the” as “t.e.h.” I had to smack it down right smartish before it gave up and slunk away.)

Downside of the modern Scoobys is that you’re in 4WD all of the time. Saved a lot of money being able to drive in 2WD when the roads were clear.
Oh, yeah…GO, PACK, GO!

You may or may not be getting old, but decadent as they may sound, once you’ve had seat heaters, you’ll never buy a car without them again. Welcome to the club. Also on the list of must-haves (though not as nice as seat heaters): heated mirrors (these should be on every car) and heated windshield washer jets (OK, I could live without these, but they’re still great). Less common, but very nice: heated rear seats. Your passengers (human and canine) will love you for this. Oh, and I once had a car with a heated steering wheel. It sounds like a gimmick, but that puppy was warm enough to feel through gloves in under a minute. Very nice on frigid New England mornings.
As for Subaru = Snow Beast…yep, they’re very nice. I’m quite partial to the Quattro system in Audis, because there is some magic traction wizardry inside it; I’ve never been stuck in any of the Audis that I’ve had over the years. But I hear great things about Subarus, and they’re all over the NE. Sadly, your standard idiot can get stuck in any car. All you have to do is drive too fast for the conditions and go over a snowbank.
Oh, while I’m here, thanks for your outstanding blog, John. It’s the one thing I read daily on these here Intertronian Tubes. The content often makes me blindingly mad in a, “yes, I am now better informed, but if you’ll excuse me, I need to fetch my pitchfork” kind of way. However, the smart, snarkilicious comments from both the front pagers and the rank and file, the pet pics, and recipes keep the anger manageable.
Thanks again. Merry YourPersecutedHolidayHere!

how bad of a driver do you have to be to get stuck in the snow in a Subaru wagon?
What gbear and AsianGrrlMN said. It’s impossible to overestimate the badth of stomper-vehicle drivers, though it’s more true of SUVs than Subarus, in my experience. Here in Salt Lake City there are a hojillion Subaru 4WDs, since the skiers rightly like them a lot. Still, many of them are driven poorly – on a quick run to the grocery store today I had two of the fuckers U-turn right in front of me and force me to shed 20 MPH or smack them.

Seat warmers are indeed the fecal matter! I’ve found that for really good traction in winter you really need a set of snow tires- at least on the drive wheels. The difference is like night and day.
Point taken about SUV drivers. I remember one year after the first snow (and it was only an inch), this stupid bastard in one just ahead of me basically ended up doing a donut at a stop because he just had to charge up to the light. I thank them every time I need to stop at an intersection for the layer of black ice they lay for everybody else because they’re always in such a damn hurry!

On a trip to then East Berlin, in the mid-80s, what I noticed about the markets was that they were very small (though there were a lot of equally small markets in West Germany), which limited their shelf space, but also that for most items there was just one brand available. You either liked it, I guess, or went without.

Tru ‘dat, JC: Gotta 2k Subaru Legacy wagon. No heated seats, but it is the greatest winter car imaginable. With the right tires (Pirelli all-weather), nothing stops this car. I’ve winched Range Rovers out of snowbanks on more than one occasion.
Sadly, it is not a good summer car; the A/C craps out at about 85 (f).
I’m afraid Subaru has made a devil’s bargain by making the Outback more SUV-like. I like the slightly lower ground clearance of the Legacy (v. the Outback)–has FAR better road manners.
Have heated seats in the wife’s Mini. They. Are. Awesome. But the Mini’s ground clearance gives me pause for concern when it comes to navigating winter conditions here in the N.E….
Left Coast Tom
Pretty bad. Of course, you haven’t seen Bad until you’ve seen LA drivers trying to drive around Mammoth Lakes in snow around Christmas. I don’t know what was more surprising, someone putting chains on a 4WD under conditions that I thought were fine for 2WD, a 4WD w/ chains skidding in a parking lot under those same conditions, or a Jeep planted sideways fully into a snowbank under those same conditions.
I’ve only had to turn around once in my Subaru, in Tahoe. I checked the snow depth on the first third of the side street I needed to drive to get to something plowed, and it was about knee deep. Seemed fine. Before I got to the plowed road there was a area of snow thigh-to-waist deep. Eventually the snow exceeded the ability of my engine to push it out of the way, so I put on chains (the only time I used chains w/ a Subie) and turned around.
As others said, the more commonly wrecked vehicles I see in the Sierra are truck-based SUVs driven by people who apparently forget that 4WD doesn’t do anything for stopping distance. That seems to be more a matter of driver-fail than vehicle-fail.
Skepticat
As we all know, it often isn’t the vehicle but the driver that gets stuck in the snow. When teaching me to drive, my dad told me that the most dangerous piece of equipment on a car is the nut that holds the wheel.
My Audi has quattro drive and heated seats, both of which I consider vital to winter survival. But the key element is that I try not to go out amongst the crazy drivers unless I absolutely have to.
Gravenstone

My first thought as well. Although the post mortem may well find some underlying defect that was undetected. Not like it hasn’t happened before.

@Corner Stone: Blame the NFL (actually, blame Mother Nature) for pushing back a couple of games due to the storm. Hence the fubared TV schedule.
Jack
@Corner Stone:
I do.
DeSean Jackson is killing my opponents, in FF.

@asiangrrlMN:
Hello. Hope you are well.
Bangkok is lovely. Inestimably bustling and huge, but full of friendly people (even if half of them seem to be pretending to be policemen in order to rip you off or sell you dodgy diamonds). Finally found some great Thai food at an actual restaurant (with an Australian chef) – food stalls are great but the smell of sewage is a little offputting.
Flying to Amsterdam midnight tonight. Wooooo!
asiangrrlMN
@Tattoosydney: Heh. Yeah, street food rocks, but the ambiance? Not so much.
Amsterdam. Hm. Wonder what you’re going to be doing there??
AhabTRuler
@Tattoosydney: If you haven’t been, go to La Tertulia, Prinsengracht 312.
I need a name for in here
Wow, what a finish, Wow. I didn’t think they could do it.Wow.
@amorphous: Rothlisberger is not an NFL caliber quarterback? He threw for over 500 yards today and threw the winning touchdown pass to the perfect point where only the receiver could touch the ball. It was pretty much the same perfect pass he threw to win the Superbowl last year and I believe that he’s won 15 games now in the final drive of the game. we’re quite happy here in Pittsburgh to have him as the Steelers QB.

Great game! Wow! Go steelers! (phew)
Nice looking sandwich, Jeffrey. Now I am hungry and it’s too late to eat.

@Tattoosydney: Also, if you like Cheese fondue, try Cafe Bern, Niuewmarkt 9, phone: 020 6220034, call ahead for reservations, it gets booked fast. Be prepared to share a table if it’s just the two of you, but I really enjoyed it the last time I was there.
asiangrrlMN
@burnspbesq: Thank you soo much. He’s totally wonderful.
Corner Stone
@Gravenstone: How dare you suggest I direct my ire outside a notionally rational yet false target?
The nerve of you sir/madam!
Now I shall blame it all on “I need a name for in here” as is my usual and accepted custom.
I need a name for in here
@Corner Stone: Blame accepted, carry on.

ah, heated seats. another saab innovation, along with active head restraints, turbos for production cars, the 4-seat convertible, the air-conditioned glove box.
just in case anyone here cares (is trollhattan around?), heated seats were designed as a safety innovation, as forced heated air tends to make drivers sleepy and can bother their eyes. on earlier saabs it was combined with a heater that also allowed cold air to come from the central dash vents to keep the driver awake.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned that heated car seats could lower men’s sperm counts and cause baby-making problems in the future.

@asiangrrlMN: Damn your prescience! I still feel a loss like this will keep the team more focused before the playoffs. But they only have two more weeks to get their shit together before it starts for real. In the silver lining dept. the Vikes are not going to get the one seed now, so they might as well rest Favre against the Giants.
asiangrrlMN
@Rosali: Feature and not a bug?
@S. cerevisiae: I know! And, they are on national TV next week, too!

@Corner Stone: We had the same thing. pissed me off. OTOH, at least I got to see the miracle at the zeros. (My wife, a native Green Bayer was not so thrilled with that play)
