Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Just another word for nothing left to lose

Jim DeMint on the freedom of losing Arlen Specter:

Derek Smalls and David St. Hubbins on the freedom of the break-up of “Spinal Tap”:

David: It’s a freein’ up, innit?
Derek: Yeah.
David: It’s all this free time it’s suddenly time is so elastic..
Derek: It’s a gift, it’s a gift of freedom. You know.
David: I’ve always, I’ve always wanted to do a collection of my
acoustic numbers with the London Philharmonic as you know.
Derek: We’re lucky.
David: Yeah.
Derek: I mean people…people should be envying us. You know.
David: I envy us.
Derek: Yeah.
David: I do.
Derek: Me too.

I ask you, honestly, who makes more sense here, Spinal Tap or Jim DeMint?

Good news for Republicans!

I really can’t improve on the title of Bill Kristol’s “quick hit” about how great it is for Republicans to have lost Arlen Specter.

Obviously, the big question is who it helps the most, Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani.

I just got back from a two hour session at the dentist. I got to experience the joy that is a “deep cleaning.” Good times. I will say this, though- my teeth look and feel much better, but I still hate going to the dentist.

Also, as I was lying there looking at the ceiling having water sprayed in my face every few seconds, it occurred to me that every single doctor I go to is female- my general practitioner, my dentist, my eye doctor, etc. When I was a kid, every doctor was male, and I don’t even think there were any female doctors in those professions where I lived. Just weird how that has changed over a few decades.

*** Update ***

We have our first Judas Iscariot reference in relation to Specter, and the winner is Red State. I honestly have no idea what these guys are so upset about. Am I going to have to go through their archives and dig up all the times they wanted to throw Specter out of the Republican party? Did I just imagine all the whinging posts about Specter and the Judiciary Committee in 2004ish? Congratulations, guys. You got your wish. He isn’t a Republican.

Apparently, purity tastes like wingnut tears.

*** Update #2 ***

Howard Fineman looks much better with grey hair.

Dumb questions from Mark Halperin

by DougJ|  April 28, 20093:41 pm| 129 Comments

Halperin asks:

6. How much money will conservative groups spend to try to beat him?

How on earth could that possibly matter? It will be a shock if whatever whack job the Republicans nominate comes within ten points of Specter. He’s now a Democrat and a long-time incumbent in a blue state (comfy Obama win, huge rej advantage).

The era of conservative dominance is over. It lives on only in the minds of Beltway political pundits.

Specterschadenfreude

This post is in: Popular Culture, Republican Stupidity

Atrios:

On the plus side, Senate staffers inform me that Republicans in the Senate are visibly in agony right now. So at least we have that!

At this point, the GOP might want to re-introduce the Schiavo legislation, just replacing the name “Terri Schiavo” with Republican.

It is also worth noting that however much fun this is, and believe me, it is a good bit of fun, that Specter is kind of an asshole. We even have a category for him here- Spectering, for all of his waffling. Having said that, anyone who brings the fringe lunatics that remain in the GOP pain is alright by me, and I’m petty and shallow enough to admit it.

Palin/Joe the Plumber 2012- do it wingnuts, I double dog dare you.

[poll id = 9]

Wingnut logic:

DeMint continued: “I would rather have 30 Republicans in the Senate who really believe in principles of limited government, free markets, free people, than to have 60 that don’t have a set of beliefs.”

You know what? Considering you now have only 40 Republicans in the Senate, I, too, would like only 30 Republicans in the Senate, and the way you fools are going, we should get there by 2016 or sooner.

At some point these clowns are going to reform themselves. They clearly aren’t ready yet.

Been There, Done That

Once you get over the patchouli smell and get used to all the barefoot hippies, it isn’t so bad:

Specter’s decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken’s victory in the state Supreme Court.)

“I have decided to run for re-election in 2010 in the Democratic primary,” said Specter in a statement. “I am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers and have my candidacy for re-election determined in a general election.”

He added: “Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.”

I’m still waiting on my Soros check and forty virgins, so don’t get too excited, Arlen. Oh, and by the way, wingnuts- how is that Republican purity treating you? Is the GOP small enough to drown in a bathtub yet? Going to love hearing how a loyal foot soldier for three decades in the GOP wasn’t “conservative enough.”

And on a serious note, I think this is how party switching should be done. At the end of the term and then run on the ticket with your new party, not right after an election. Additionally, the weirdest thing about being a Democrat is I don’t feel any different than I did when I was a Republican, other than that I no longer have to make excuses for crazy and stupid people.

Activist F–king Judges

At least you can still cling to your guns:

Splitting 5-4, the Supreme Court upheld the government’s power under existing law to ban the use on radio and TV of even a single four-letter word that is considered indecent — but left open the question of whether the ban might violate the First Amendment, at least in some situations. The Court, in an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia, said the Federal Communications Commission’s switch in policy to ban even a fleeting use of such a word was “entirely rational” under the law that governs federal administrative powers.

The opinion referred to the banned words as the “F-word” and the “S-word” but not go on to fill out their actual spelling. Justice Scalia also did not spell them out in his oral announcement of the decision.

Someone explain the ruling, because as we all know, I am clueless when it comes to legal matters.
