Greece making a strong early effort in winning the “least amount of possession by a side”… though they’d really have to step up their games if they want to challenge the futility demonstrated in yesterday’s games.

30+ minutes in and not a single shot on goal, or any shot period for the men from Athens??
It’s clear that Greece is playing a 0-3-7-type formation. Damn boring.

Can’t believe Argentina hasn’t scored a goal yet. Expected more from them.

Where’s your Messi now, Moses?

Greece is playing in Euro 2004 form again. I can feel the same morbid fascination watching them as their defense shuts down a team much better than them.
They did that in 2004 a couple of times until they won the title.
On the plus side, with South Korea just having taken the lead, Greece needs to win by 2 goals or they’re out. Can’t really see that happening.

Yes, but the degree to which Samaras has bothered Demichelis & co. , with only a few touches, doesn’t bode well for Argentina. He could easily have scored.

@Leeds man: Yep, that’s exactly how it went in 2004. Score once, good enough.
Nigeria has just tied their game, so Greece only needs one right now. Or Nigeria turns it around completely.
Uruguay vs. Greece, any takers?

Well, that probably settled it.

It might be better to combine these world cup open threads for games happening at the same time. Both matches affect each other and it’d be easier than going back and forth.

Ugh. And I had to listen to on Rrrrrrrradio Mundial! in the car and hear the friggin Spanish announcer scream GGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL for like 3 minutes. It was annoying.
Not sure that’s a good idea for tomorrow morning’s games. Might want to separate the Limey whiners (here!) and the American whiners. Combining us would make the vuvuzelas sound like Mozart.

Maradona is such a character. I really enjoyed the shots of him on the sidelines watching his guys play. How cool was it that 36 year old Palermo, who scored the second goal, played with Maradona for a very short while near the end of Maradona’s playing career. What a day for that guy.

South America seems to have an unfair advantage over the rest of the world this year.
Back in the good old days I used to travel extensively through Argentina. Among the nicest people I have met anywhere. I hope they and their crazy coach’s let’s go score philosophy win it Juy 11th. Sure as hell beats ten men back and hope for one good counter attack. And yes, I am still mad at the Greek-American team that blew out my knee.
Early days. The Dutch, Spanish and Germans look respectable.
And count your blessings, Mart. If it had been a Portuguese-American team you might not be posting today.

Yes Leeds man I expect Argentina will get burned being too far up against equally good attacking teams. I just “hope” they make it as I think that would be the most fun. I mean, how much fun are the German’s? About my knee, to be honest it was not the Greeks’ fault. I turned my back on him and passed running backward. Never turn your back on a Greek!
@Mart: They’ll also be burned for bringing six forwards and only 7 defenders and 7 midfielders. One significant injury/sending off to a defender/defensive midfielder and he could be in a world of trouble.
@Randinho:I find your World Cup knowledge to be the best on the net, and predictions to be downright clairvoyant. However, in regards to the Argentine personnel numbers cited above, there are no worries. When the “Hand of God” is on your side, these are minor matters.

Πηγαίνετε, Ελλάδα!

This game will be very Messi. Indeed, Greece-y.
I suspect The Sanford Mistresses Team will smoke Athens and Sparta.

Mart,
They have not really been tested much. The defender issue may come back to haun them the further they go.

Great match for Greece. Unlucky they didn’t get the match. However, Argentina played great. They diserved to score twice in the match.
