Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let there be snark.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

The willow is too close to the house.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Not all heroes wear capes.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

I really should read my own blog.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

I am sure this will be a bestseller:

“Dirty Sexy Politics,” written by Meghan McCain, daughter of former Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain of Arizona, goes behind the scenes on the campaign trail and in the spotlight to discuss why she thinks the Republican Party has veered from its roots.

The last few chapters should cover her father becoming a full-fledged teahadist the last few months.

This is one of those books where the number of copies sold will bear a direct relation to the cover photo.

Got nowhere to put this, so here you go:

Lockheed Martin currently plans to build some 3,200 F-35s costing about $96 million each.

(Reuters) – Israel is in talks to build the wings for about a quarter of the United States’s new F-35 stealth fighter aircraft, an Israeli official said on Monday.

Justification for building such a big arsenal (stuck at the very end of the article)?

The F-35 is designed to avoid detection by radar and could play a role in any Israeli effort to knock out what it regards as the threat to its existence posed by Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran denies Western and Israeli allegations that it is trying to produce atomic weapons.

    Wiki:

She has commented that the cause of the gay community for equality is “one of the ones closest to my heart”. As such, she spoke at the Log Cabin Republicans convention in April 2009.[8] There she encapsulated her cultural and political perspectives with the declaration: “I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican.

Sounds like she’s following the EDK path, here. With the exception that she’s already on the wingnut gravy train, so she can’t renounce the GOP totally. Also, I hear her father was some kind of prisoner in a war or something. Maybe she can fill us in on that dark corner of her family history.

On a tangential note: For reasons beyond my understanding, I’m on one of those DCCC conference calls right now.

The guy, Jon Vogel, started off talking about how the Democrats are doing well by running ads about how Republican nominees are cheating on their taxes. I’m pretty sure he was just trying to get us all to hang up.

If anyone has any questions for Paul Begala (haha!), feel free to let me know, and I’ll try to ask it.

What roots? The abolition party founded 150 years ago? Or the party of big business that it became 140 years ago?

Seriously, the only thing that ever made Republicans look good was the vile, lynch-happy Southern wing of the Democratic Party, And now they are all Republicans!

They’ve been big business meets Christian fundamentalism meets white nationalism since the ’80s. Which incidentally is when Meghan McCain was born.

@Huggy Bear: Yeah. One of the callers kind of made that point already.

Begala did extoll the virtue of the DCCC doubling down on some races that they previously might have given up on. So, he is making an overall argument for fortitude and aggressiveness. I wish he could make that argument to Democratic legislators as well.

The NYT was completely ham-handed in that.

Lobbyists ran the entire McCain campaign and the NYT effectively insulated the Campaign from reports on THAT fact by saying (without sufficient backup) that Mccain was involved with her.

Also, incredible disappearing act by Iseman. Has she EVER been interviewed?

I’m dying to know what eghan McCain considers punk rock. Is she a crusty gutter punk fan who likes Crass? Rather, does she favor the NY sound of the late 1970s and rock out to television? Or, is she a cheeseball who thinks this current “Cheap Trick played really fast” crap (or as I call it, Green Blink 42) is punk rock?

For the record, the best thing (or only thing, really) I got out of that DCCC conference call was this:

If you know any old people who may or may not vote, talk to them about Paul Ryan’s budget proposal!

Which is pretty good advice. Sadly, all the old people I know are liberals of the type who sprain their necks while sitting in Lazy Boys (ETA or Republicans who think Obama is a Muslim and don’t give a damn about the future of SS or Medicare because they already got theirs), so I’m not sure I can put it to the best use.

    @roshan:

In case you did not know it, our current fleet of F-15 and F-16 fighters are going on 25 to 35 years old. They are worn out and in some cases are actually coming apart in midair.

The F-22 and F-35 are replacing them.

Of course, Russia has built the new Sukhoi PAK FA fighter. A fifth generation jet fighter, it is designed to directly compete with Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

The Russian Air Force has already committed to buying 200 airframes and India has committed to 200. The PAK FA is being offered for sale on the world wide market.

On the other hand the B-1 is not worn out – cause they never fly them.

The B-2 cannot be risked in dangerous places because it is so expensive.

Meanwhile, the capabilities of drones are rapidly increasing, as is the size of the deployed drone fleet.
How many drones for a single manned fighter?

But Fighter Pilots are going to disappear as slowly as the Air Force can arrange.

    @catclub:

On the other hand the B-1 is not worn out – cause they never fly them.

They have been used a number of times in Iraq since they have a long loiter time and can carry an awful lot of ordnance.

The B-2 cannot be risked in dangerous places because it is so expensive.

The B-2 was used initially in Afghanistan for the opening bombing missions where they dropped JDAMS satellite guided munitions. It is really meant to tasked as a nuclear weapons delivery aircraft or at least to be used in very high risk theatres with modern radar and SAM coverage. Not much of that around for now. I see the B-2 as being an early candidate for replacement by stealth drone bombers that can carry cruise missiles in the near future.

Meanwhile, the capabilities of drones are rapidly increasing, as is the size of the deployed drone fleet.
How many drones for a single manned fighter?

True. Yet, drones that can have sufficient onboard processing to engage in autonomous air to air combat and reliably not destroy friendly assets are still in the future. An unmanned machine gun carrying robot was sent to Iraq and never used. Nobody trusted it. There will be considerable unease over autonomous robot jet fighters…and they have to have autonomy to engage in micro-second decision making that cannot possibly be performed via satellite downlink from a person half a world away who has no situational awareness.

But Fighter Pilots are going to disappear as slowly as the Air Force can arrange.

See the above. It will happen…eventually. The F-22 can perform maneuvers that will incapacitate or kill a human pilot, so the controls are constrained in such a way as to limit the aircraft from its’ true potential. When the computing power and ability to control (heh, maybe) that power arrives, we will see drone fighters that would be unbeatable by any human piloted aircraft.

Shalimar, don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it.

What’s John upset about? It’s a book and if she wrote it, she actually did the work. It’s an interesting angle: more liberal daughter of a more conservative father who is the presidential candidate of a far right party writes about what she saw on the campaign. Dunno know if the book is going to be good or bad, but tthere’s an audience for that. This ain’t Luke Russert style nepotism, cuz you could replace Luke with anyone and the news would be the same.

Plus, as mentioned upthread, the great rack ain’t going to hurt when you do the book tour.
