    And his increasingly rare columns have become so predictable that I could write them, and I don’t give a shit about the things he cares about.
    They’re imprinted on his readership by now but he hasn’t moved past that.
    He was great for 5 to 7 years, but just needs to transition to some other element now.
    I saved Steve Gillard and Sports Guy for my lunch time reading, for years.

    Finding this thread reminded me of something I wanted to check out… some nice enterprising folks posted a few of the Super Bowl celebrations that you see for various teams when you win Madden.

    I think that this will likely be the closest I will ever come to seeing the Lions celebrating at the end of a Super Bowl, unless of course one of them happens to win Super Bowl squares.

    @asiangrrlMN: Typing is okay, since arm is immobile while typing on laptop. just when I lift arm or try to grasp something that it is hurting. Pain makes it easy to implement a virtual splint right now. Like I said, I can sit at home and grit my teeth or sit in a waiting room and grit my teeth (I’ve had more than enough ER experiences to know what will happen), so I’m opting for my bed and some music.

    I am well aware of complications (I’ve had two broken arms – one misdiagnosed by a team coach – and two broken legs). Right now, it’s very painful when moved in certain ways, but I wouldn’t classify it as broken bone painful – perhaps fractured. It’s not moving because I’m not moving it, and I’m *seriously* not interested in spending a night at the ER (which I’ve also done more than I’d care). It’s my off-wing as well, which means I can manage keeping it stable. So first thing tomorrow, I’m off to the nearest x-ray machine to see what needs done.

    The Ivory Tower is a great book and I’m glad to see it referenced. I would have said it was a bit out of place, but she was obviously on the first page of the book. She’d probably never had access to a novel before being in hospital.

    @parsimon: I do not know, really, about Mr. Cole’s participation in Open Threads, and so I grant you the very strong likelihood of being right.

    I would pay $11 a month for cable TV, but in my area, I do not have that option. I haven’t checked recently, but basic cable (dozens of channels) costs a lot more than that. I live alone, and chose to sideline the cable as a “want” rather than a “need”. If there were others in my household, we might very well have cable, and economize elsewhere. Also, I house-sit a lot, often in beautiful homes with all sorts of bells, whistles, hi-def, and cable plus premium channels. I do not suffer. Please don’t think I am judging you or anyone else.

    In fact: pleased to meet you! Would you like a refreshing icy cold beverage of some kind? I’ll get one for myself as well, because we’re having a very tiresome but timely heat wave. Cold summer, hot hot hot autumn.

    On the cable matter: I had to argue with my cable company some years ago to get the true “basic” package for a mere $11/month — they initially said that “basic” meant $30 or $40, which was false. The true (cheap) basic originally included several dozen channels, but now that the switch to digital has commenced, it’s a wash. Oh well. Good while it lasted.
