Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let there be snark.

He really is that stupid.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

In my day, never was longer.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

No one could have predicted…

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Our new overlords, ladies and gentlemen:

On the Senate floor last night, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) issued a challenge to anybody who believes tax cuts should be paid for. Acting like he’d found a hole in his political opponents’ argument, Coburn demanded that “anyone who thinks we oughta pay for tax cuts oughta have to put up a list of programs that we oughta eliminate to pay for them.”

I’m going to start drinking now.

Nice. It would be even better if they pronounced Jesus in the Hispanic first-name sort of way. Or at least more ecumenical.

Also, the van should be moving.

And could zombies chase the van? I think that could really add something.

Speaking of kidfucking, Charles Blow has an interesting chart about that in his column today.

And now explain to me why we are borrowing over $500 per capita per year for the next two years to continue giving tax cuts directly to the richest 2% in our country, while at the same time raising taxes on couples earning under 40K/year and individuals earning under 20K.

That Obama. He sure is a shrewd negotiator.

@WyldPirate: Man, that’s damning as hell.

No sense blaming Obama; it’s much bigger than that. This is a trend that’s just now coming to bloom, as we have NOT been investing in our infrastructure materially and culturally.

Just take a look at the cost of a public university education now as compared to when Reagan came into office (that’s when this really got started). It ain’t because costs have risen at that rate but because state funding has dried up. People pay taxes, often at too low rates, and this does NOT get prioritized for education and other long term goods.

    There are causes for this.

Phoenix had 86 homicides as of the end of October, a 25.2 percent drop from the same time in 2009, when there were 115 killings, Sgt. Trent Crump said. Phoenix detectives also are solving more homicides this year. The clearance rate for 2010 is 84.9 percent; in 2009, it was 63.5 percent.

Phoenix homicides have been declining for more than a decade, from a record 244 in 1994 and in 1995. Crump said that, by the end of this year, with Phoenix homicides perhaps at about 100, “that takes us back to the 1980s; it’s quite a drop.”

Some new crime stats today from here in the crime capital of the Mexican-overrun capital of illegal immigration.

Obama’s approval rating slips to 42% in a new McClatchy-Marist poll conducted from Dec 2-8.

And this seems significant–particularly in light of the fact that the poll isn’t totally conducted after the announcement of the “deal with the Rethugs”.

Obama’s standing among Democrats dropped from a month ago, with his approval rating falling to 74 percent from 83 percent, and his disapproval rating almost doubling, from 11 percent to 21 percent.

That was also the start of the adversarial relationship between the generations, when Reagan’s generation basically said, “You damn kids don’t appreciate everything we’ve done for you, so we’re taking our tax money and going home.”

Plus, of course, it was when minorities and women started being admitted on an equal basis instead of being held to quotas, so people also decided they didn’t want to pay for Them to go to college if it meant their precious little snowflake couldn’t get in.

They cannot be progressives and actively working to defeat a Democratic President, at a time when Congress is getting more wingnutty. What we have is a dumbass problem. We have a nation of dumbasses that want a bunch of services but don’t want to pay for them. They bought the Reagan lie of the “trickle down” free lunch. That lie goes along perfectly with the Norquist goal of drowning the government in a bathtub and the screams from the Reich wing of the past 30 years that government is incompetent and that the private sector is better at doing everything better than the government can.

I think we are beyond hope now. I think it is going everything is going to have to crash before something else can rebuilt. the US is like an old abandoned barn that is falling apart and collapsing because of neglect.

What does interest me is the suggestion that our legislators are supposed to be looking out for the middle class to the exclusion of other concerns. I thought, borrowing from Burke, our representatives owed us their judgment. I can think of any number of circumstances when the right thing to do would impact the middle class negatively. It’s really not hard to do. For instance, taking all the money from the rich and giving it to the middle class would “help” the middle class (at least by socialist reckoning), but such an act would — I hope — be unconstitutional or at least wrong in the eyes of Congress.

I bring this up mostly because it has DougJ-bait in it.

I know there’s no changing that, because it’s set out in the Tenth Amendment of the Bible or something. Maybe it just didn’t fall on you.

Give it time, I think it will. I imagine that Barry and Bill had a nice long conversation about that triangulation thingy yesterday.

I’m not so much mad that the deal was made. I’m more pissed that it was made without doing anything else. And yes, Obama shares blame for that decision.

    @WyldPirate:
Oh, yes, plenty of blame to go around. I just think it’s an artifact of cognitive machinery that we’re able to pin things so absolutely, here and now, on certain actors. As you said upstream, this shit has been building since at least Reagan. Anyway, all kinds of cognitive bias at work that makes me distrust easy conclusions. Ubiquitous fucking Jonah Lehrer could help me out on this one, since I’m rusty on the psych-speak.

Best [email protected]#n song about beer and Jaysus and now more pertinent than ever:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBaSTozYLdI

i drink beer to improve my mind
    end the the war
    help mankind
through these dark and trying times

hey batter batter batter hey batter hey
    swing batter swing
    hey, swing away
    swing for the fence
    live for today
put your life in Jesus hands
shut your eyes just as tight as you can
and swing like a man like a man like a man

i drink beer to boost retail sales
    save those dolphins
    save those whales
i drink beer for the revolution

hey batter batter batter hey batter hey
swing batter swing hey, swing away
    swing for the fence
    live for today
put your life in Jesus hands
shut your eyes just as tight as you can
and swing like a man like a man like a man

    cuz
    we are men
    and men we shall remain
    we shall remain men
    until we go home
    we are men
    and men we shall remain
    we shall remain men
    until we go home

    @Maody:

Well, didn’t see that until just now — ha! Kooky cats beat crazy days without cats.
Just got my rescue cat back from our catsitter (like, 2 hours ago). Crazy thing is still neurotic as any barely-not-feral, but she’s acting sweet, like she remembers who I am. Aww.
