Go Bears! I love Lovie, even though most fans are haters, I like him because he just makes me laugh at his calm, cool and collected demeanor no matter the crappy games the team has. He somehow makes it work. (I’m talking to you O-Line) Go Bears!
@BGinCHI: Allen’s. It closed about 5 years ago and reopened over on Hawthorne. The Flyers still play and Davis even sits in with them when the do their Rolling Bones gig. Their version of the White Trash Song is killer.

Of course Allen’s was made famous in Deadbeat Club
Going down to Allen’s for

And the jukebox playing real loud,
“Ninety-six tears”
We’re wild girls walkin’ down the street
Wild girls and boys going out for a big time
The 52’s are playing a benefit for the Georgia Theater soon.
How about that Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodomeopenairstadium, huh?
I know the Vikings are jonesing for a new stadium, but can’t they put up a retractable roof like the Mariners Stadium in Seattle? Sure, the fans would be cold to the point of frostbite or hypothermia, but football fans that want to pay those ticket prices are drunk off their ass anyway, so they won’t feel a thing.
Whoever thought a big ass balloon would protect the field in the case of a blizzard must have been juiced (wink, wink).
@The Dangerman: Yea, this is the first time it’s snowed there since the built it.

@stuckinred: I was at a cafe on Broad St one day (in 90 or 91) and the 52s were in town cuz Fred came in and sat down at the table next to me, then the two girls rode up on their bikes, then Michael S came in and joined them.
@BGinCHI: Proly Guaranteed, Sue an Amy ran it and Mike had a stake. Did I tell you that Ted Hafner who owned the Grit took a dive off the parking deck?

@stuckinred: I lived at the corner of Hill and Harris and also in 93 on Nantahala in a rundown shitty house by the railroad tracks.
You ever know my friend Lamar Thomas? Red headed guy who was a chef?
Well, ya know, those baggies are cheap compared to solid roofs, and much, much cheaper than the retractable roofs. There’s a small domed stadium up in Marquette, MI that’s all wood.
I suspect that if the baggie at the Silverdome had begun leaking earlier than it did, we wouldn’t have seen any more of them built.
Browns squishing it out over the Bills, woof woof!
Looking forward to NE @ CHI and PHIL @ DAL later on. What a great day to stay inside, watch the snow fall outside and the NFL on the ijit box.
And I fucking hate these stupid jewelry commercials. Making people look stupid using icky-sticky sentimentalism does not entice me to buy your product, jewelry industry peoples – marketing FAIL.
Yea, this is the first time it’s snowed there since the built it.
True, it’s held up well, but it’s like planning for a 50 year or 100 year flood, worst case scenario and all. Can you imagine if it had deflated during a game?
can’t they put up a retractable roof like the Mariners Stadium in Seattle?
I’d have to check exactly what the weight tolerances are for the roof on Safeco Field, but my guess is that it’s designed to account for some snow weight. I think. Hard to say as I don’t think it’s ever snowed in April in Seattle. Plus football shouldn’t be played indoors. Ever.
Also: Peyton better not have a case of the drops today or else Cleveland will have a loooong day.
@asiangrrlMN: It’s cool, she loves this stuff and we are so happy the doggies are ok, I’ll just tape the game and watch it when all the gardeners leave. They are getting a big batch of Ceviche straight from the gulf!
Just watched the video; I had visions of the Dallas practice field collapse and lots of injuries. Not at all similar, but, still, wouldn’t have been pleasant….

As a Minnesotan, I suspect sabotage, since Ziggy Wilf keeps threatening to take his team away when the leas expires shortly.
The NFL wants a team in Los Angeles in the worst way, has anyone seen Roger Goodell with a big knife?
Sad thing is LA doesn’t want a team! Shit, we have no issues on blackouts or missing a good game for a shitty local one. But we’re good for those teams that need to have some leverage (Chargers are using us, too).

How backwards is it that the Vikes have a stadium with a roof and theTwins don’t?
Did I ever tell you about the time my Sophomore year when we were undefeated, it was second round of the playoffs, and the football field was too muddy to use? The assistant coach, one of those obscene bajillionaires who lives on the lake, hired a HELICOPTER to hover over the field for an hour to dry it off.
@Yutsano: I wish. We stood firm against welfare for the Twins for many years. Hennepin County had to do some shady finagling to get it passed–against public wishes. I fear the same will happen with the Vikes. If LA gets the Vikings, then they can be friends with the Minneapolis LA Lakers.
@burnspbesq: Twins wanted it. It would have added quite a bit to the cost. They were having enough trouble getting a stadium built on public monies in the first place, so they ditched the retractable. I bet they will start grumbling for one this year. And it will cost more to add one.
I believe it. Hell, if he passed the bill on to the district, I’m sure no one blinked.
I’ve never once seen EGR turn down a millage proposal. Hell, when they passed one to expand the gyms at the elementary schools back in the late ’90s and Lakeside’s ended up being built about 2 feet too small, they easily passed another millage request to redo it the next summer.
I’ll send him an email through the restaurant or something. Too long since I’ve talked to him. We went through some dark times together.
Restaurant looks great. That fucker can cook.

@burnspbesq: The Twins poutraged over getting new digs, but the city balked at the roof price tag. The one over Safeco is hella nice but that fucker wasn’t cheap.
@Omnes Omnibus: Heh. It’s like watching a kindergarten class after ice cream day is canceled.
@asiangrrlMN: The real bad news, after watching that collapse, is that the Metrodome is gonna be toast for awhile. Which of course just strengthens Wilf’s hand in demanding a new stadium. It’s okay to let them go, we did it with the Supersonics and honestly I don’t think we miss them much.
Protip to the Browns: GIVE PEYTON THE BALL YOU FUCKING IDIOTS!!
@BGinCHI: Yea, I hope it fly’s. Bisset’s built the space and, while very attractive, it’s out near the mall and I worry about it getting enough action.
88.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yutsano: I may have contributed to the poutrage. But at least, I looked good. I had to “like” the station to comment; I “unliked” as soon as the station came back on.
@Andy K:
I was going to post the one sentence from NFL.com, “Game cancelled because roof collapsed”, without comment. The Giants will simply have to destroy the Vikings tomorrow. AsiangrrrlMN, you know this is true.
If LA gets the Vikings, then they can be friends with the Minneapolis LA Lakers.
We’d have to have a name change; LA might have some reasonable sized lakes within a several hour commute, but we sure as shit have nothing related to Vikings. We would need something local; I propose the LA Carjackers.
@The Dangerman: Snicker. I wish we could neuter them. And, LA needs a football team, doncha know.
@Yutsano: You and me, mind-meld. And, yeah, I agree. Zygi has to be grinning in glee right now. Ah, hell. I might as well be resigned to the permanent outrage I will feel when the Vikings get their new stadium.
P.S. The Twins went three and out to the Yanks in the playoffs in the Hennepin County Taxpayers Stadium. They can do that just fine in the Metrodome.

Been a longtime lurker but still getting to know the regulars. You’re right, very good people here–kind, smart and witty. Well worth a few thorns.
@asiangrrlMN: I imagine the distortion racket will start all over again when Seattle makes a play for an NHL team. There’s a great location downtown that would be perfect but they say it’s too small. It was the big excuse for the Sonics move (not that it mattered, the new owner wanted any excuse under the sun to bail) but even a large remodel is quite feasible instead of starting from scratch. Hell you could build something twice the size there and it would fit. It just wouldn’t have that new arena smell. Plus the payoffs for our new stadiums are actually ahead of schedule.

Yes, Thank Gog the dome collapsed! Since Minnesota schools are waaaay over funded, the roads too well maintained (I35 bridge anyone?), they are adding poor people to the state health care program, it really behooves them to ensure that an out of state billionaire can increase the value of his investment. Particularly one so critical to the well being of the entire nation as an NFL franchise.
The taxpayers managed to double the value of the Twins at a cost of only 5 times the increase in value ($500mil spent for $100mill increase). It would be unkind not to do it again. Really they should do it for every billionaire.
@Andy K: Oh, so that’s how it is, is it? Man, you and me would be like a rom-com. fight, fight, fight, angry make-up sex, fight, dramatic break up, hot make-up sex, fight, fight, fight. Go, Lions!

Listening to the Duke women’s basketball game online. The omens are not good for Oklahoma State. Eight minutes in, it’s 15-3, the Cowgirls are 1-for-3 from the floor with 12 turnovers.
@4jkb4ia: I don’t disagree with the assessment of the Dome. However, we had an outdoor stadium called the Met. The Twins blathered on and on about needing an indoor stadium. They built the stupid Dome and razed the Met. The Dome wasn’t around for ten minutes before people started grumbling about it. I begrudge spending public monies on it. I begrudge it a lot. Especially as the state essentially forced the people of one county to pay for it after the commissioners of that county OK’ed it 4-3.

No, it was a movie about U of M grads. Had it been about U of M fans, it would have been set in the break room of a Ford plant.
Now if it was a movie about OSU grads, it would have been set in a WalMart break room…And if it was about OSU fans, the whole film would have been set in a queue of Ohioans selling scrap metal at a junkyard.

They’re in transition from a monogamous relationship and they need more space. Or they’re tired of space, but they just can’t commit. Or they want to commit, but they’re afraid to get close. They want to get close, you don’t want to get near them.
Little of both. I have strong underdog sympathies and usually dislike rabid homerism. The ultimate being FTFY, of course. I think Pittsburgh will make the playoffs, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them have to take a more, er, angsty route. Heh.
Sort of dozing through the Buccaneers-Redskins game now while waiting for Patriots-Bears at 4:00. Of course, I thought Jets-Pats was going to be a great game last week. Even planned to sit down and watch the whole game, which I rarely do, and it turned into a 42-point bloodbath. I apologize to everyone for causing that. Maybe the Bears are made of sterner stuff.
Redskins are playing pretty well–their running back had 100 yards in the first quarter alone–but they can’t seem to score. Well into the second quarter before they got a touchdown, and it’s still only 10-6 late in the third.
But I’m glad to be home in the man-cave and doing nothing. It’s rainy and very gray here, temp around 41°. Perfect day for doing nothing. Which is what I am doing. That is all.
@Andy K: Nice gratuitous all-around Big Ten slam. ;-)
But really, it was about (whiny, navel-gazing) U of M grads who were also fans; I mean the whole stupid movie culminated in the Michigan State-Michigan football game. Hence, the hockey game yesterday between the same two teams was appropriately dubbed “The Big Chill.”
(for the record, Dad’s a Kent State grad; I’m Ohio University. But when you’re from Ohio, you just root for the Buckeyes and hate all things Michigan. It’s our birthright. We’ve got to have something to believe in around here. I mean, have you ever actually been to Ohio? :-) )
(ETA: You don’t have to answer that; I think you probably have!)
@Steeplejack: I hear you. I am a big fan of the underdog. If I have no skin in a game, I will root for the underdog. As for the Bears/Pats…sigh. I should root against the Bears, but I hate the Pats. Dilemmas.
Well, you gotta root for what helps your Vikes the most. Presume that would involve a Patriots victory, however distasteful the prospect.
Dark cloud behind the silver lining is that the game delay gives Old Man Yelling at Clouds (h/t Yutsy) another day to miraculously heal and keep his starting streak alive. Because that’s what’s really important. Not, you know, winning the game or anything like that. Oof. You have my sympathy this year.

It’s much worse than the horse crap- yes, literally, horse crap– left by Hoosier fans.
@Steeplejack: Well, if you’ve read the rest of the thread, I have very complicated feelings for the Vikes. I don’t actually want them to make the playoffs. Still. I probably will root for the Pats. Grudgingly. Yeah. Favre’s starting streak is all-important. Sigh.

@asiangrrlMN: There is a rather large IRS facility in Cincinnati, so it is possible for me to end up venturing over that way at some point. I might see if there would be any way of extending that out.
@JenJen: Subtle that song ain’t. But sometimes you just have to channel your inner Barry White.
You know, you can just feel the momentum making a permanent shift in this damned game. As a Bengals fan, I am quite familiar with this feeling, and have experienced it 10 games in a row now. Heavy in the air, faint taste of metal.
Sniff. Hangin’ with ’em, regardless.
ETA: Hold up now! Bengals D actually decided to make a play there. Hmmmm! OK, Carson, seriously, just hold it together here.
@Yutsano: I know!! Love the comments section to the video, too. Lots of “I am so getting laid to this song tonight” sentiment.
That’s why I appreciate the Bengals. They lose, but they almost always manage to do it in a maudlin, “That’s a damn shame” way. Very touching, even if you’re not a big fan of theirs.
And, as I said upthread, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Stillers get a few more bumps and scrapes on the inevitable road to the playoffs.
@JenJen: Love Shawn Mullins. And, yeah, sexy. Not something I, either, would normally say about a Mullins’ song. But, he does have that growl thing going on.
ETA: Gotta say, though, not my fave song by him.
And, I mostly stick to the sports threads and the late-night open threads (and the animal threads). Much healthier for me.
@Yutsano: YAY! That would be massively awesome. Maybe you can make it coincide with the Netroots Conference in summer.
I had forgotten that. I was so glad when I moved from Florida to Minnesota. Here was a State that understood it cost money to have great schools, good roads and that we all do better when we make it possible for the poor to get in the game. Now it seems more like a frozen Florida: Nothing for you unless I get more! Screw the poor! Why am I paying taxes for schools or roads or transit when I don’t use them?
Now, like Florida the lege tries to hide the cost of what the State does, pretend it can do stuff for free, disguise where the money really comes from and generally screws the people who seem to be happy to avoid the hard discussions.
@Steeplejack: Thank you for your condolences. They are dramatic, aren’t they? At the beginning of the season, I was really hoping they’d tug at my heartstrings in a completely different way, but you’ll have that as a Bengals die-hard. I’m pretty sure most would consider my devotion to be a character flaw.
Silver lining though? We’ll have a sweet draft pick (who will fail spectacularly anyway)!
@asiangrrlMN: Well, I loved that song the first time I heard it, and I had no idea it was Shawn Mullins! He’s fantastic live, as you already know if you’ve ever seen him. The kind of artist who puts it all out there, in a very entertaining fashion. He rules.
@asiangrrlMN: Love that song, even if it is like seven years old now. ;-) I keed! Really, do catch him live, and soon. He’s touring down south right now; smart guy, considering the weather.
Oooh, hoo, hoo, the Lions are about ready to win another football game. Adding: don’t punt it, idiots: long snap it, run around, throw the ball out of bounds.
I also know how much it takes to clean up after all the chaw juice and rusty fenders left on our roads here in Michigan after the Buckeyes visit the Wolverines and Spartans.
Save for that infamous Mirror Lake Pee Incident (and those were actual OSU students!), you don’t really believe I couldn’t match you one-for-one with those visiting fan stories, do you? I don’t even live in Columbus, but I could spew volumes just on the novice way in which Michigan fans drive, have accents which make it sound as though the lot of them are expats from Ontario, and suck at tipping their bartenders, before I even got warmed up.

@Andy K:

Well, ya know, those baggies are cheap compared to solid roofs, and much, much cheaper than the retractable roofs. There’s a small domed stadium up in Marquette, MI that’s all wood.

I’d have to check exactly what the weight tolerances are for the roof on Safeco Field, but my guess is that it’s designed to account for some snow weight. I think. Hard to say as I don’t think it’s ever snowed in April in Seattle. Plus football shouldn’t be played indoors. Ever.

Nah, more of an Ohio State slam. I’m a Michigan fan, not a grad, and know the difference there. I also know how much it takes to clean up after all the chaw juice and rusty fenders left on our roads here in Michigan after the Buckeyes visit the Wolverines and Spartans. It’s much worse than the horse crap- yes, literally, horse crap– left by Hoosier fans.
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
What are you talking about? There are no gays in professional football. It’s a well-known fact.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: That was a catch by Jennings.
And THAT was an interception!
@Steeplejack: Well, if you’ve read the rest of the thread, I have very complicated feelings for the Vikes. I don’t actually want them to make the playoffs. Still. I probably will root for the Pats. Grudgingly. Yeah. Favre’s starting streak is all-important. Sigh.
@Yutsano: Yes. I am studiously ignoring it. If you visit Ohio, you have to come to MN, too.
burnspbesq
It’s hard to get upset when your team is up 38-9 at the half, but jeez, 14 turnovers?
Omnes Omnibus
Fuck! Endzone interception.
JenJen
@Yutsano:
These days, I just try to stick to the sports threads for this precise reason. Not even gonna look. Too happy watching my hapless Bengals handle the Stillers surprisingly well so far (but it’s early).
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I am so addicted to this Shawn Mullins song. Sexxxxxxxx-aay! And I never thought I’d ever say something like that about a Shawn Mullins song.
burnspbesq
So Scott Brown’s daughter graduates, and Boston College is off to a 10-0 start and averaging over 90 points a game. Addition by subtraction?
Andy K
I’m glad Levy was dumb enough to return it from out of the end zone.
When did defensive players forget about the touchback?
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: Missed FG. Thank god.
Andy K
Thank you, Lions’ long-snapper.
There’s a joke to be made there. Have at it.
Andy K
@Omnes Omnibus:
I’m soooo glad I’m watching this at home. My dad and sister would be driving me nuts at the bar right now were I there.
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: I’m watching alone at home as well. Madame Omnibus is making X-mas ornaments with some of her fellow students.
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: Whatever gets you through the day there Steepman. Whatever gets you through the day. :)
JenJen
You know, you can just feel the momentum making a permanent shift in this damned game. As a Bengals fan, I am quite familiar with this feeling, and have experienced it 10 games in a row now. Heavy in the air, faint taste of metal.
Sniff. Hangin’ with ’em, regardless.
ETA: Hold up now! Bengals D actually decided to make a play there. Hmmmm! OK, Carson, seriously, just hold it together here.
@Yutsano: I know!! Love the comments section to the video, too. Lots of “I am so getting laid to this song tonight” sentiment.
Steeplejack
@JenJen:
Andy K
@Omnes Omnibus:
Dad & sis during the Atlanta game: “Why aren’t the Packers running the ball?”
Uh, because they haven’t been running the ball well all season?
asiangrrlMN
@JenJen: Love Shawn Mullins. And, yeah, sexy. Not something I, either, would normally say about a Mullins’ song. But, he does have that growl thing going on.
ETA: Gotta say, though, not my fave song by him.
And, I mostly stick to the sports threads and the late-night open threads (and the animal threads). Much healthier for me.
@Yutsano: YAY! That would be massively awesome. Maybe you can make it coincide with the Netroots Conference in summer.
JenJen
Oh for fuck’s sake Carson!! What did I say? He’s making me miss Kitna.
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: I just want to get the W and go back to Green Bay. Let Rodgers be okay and let’s move on.
Andy K
John Wesley Harding- I’m Wrong About Everything
Tim F.
Jesus harrison Christ. Baltimore’s third-string defense should feel pretty goddamned proud of itself tonight.
alwhite
@asiangrrlMN:
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: God damn it!
asiangrrlMN
@alwhite: Well, I think we are still better than Florida. At least we didn’t elect a crook as governor. This time.
@Andy K: I like it. And, touchdown, Lions!
ETA: This will be the song you play in our rom-com after you do something really stupid and before I forgive you (so we can have hawt make-up sex).
JenJen
He rules.
Andy K
Not good. Not good at all.
debit
Go Lions. I’m going to go back out and shovel some more. Kill me. Kill me now.
Yutsano
Gonna snag some tacos and maybe do a little housecleaning before the Seachickens rip out my guts. Y’all behave now.
S. cerevisiae
The Lions D has come alive.
asiangrrlMN
@JenJen: I haven’t seen him live. I bet he would be awesome. This is one of my newer faves of his.
Goooooo, Lions!
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Either that or this.
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: I don’t know that we are going to get this one.
asiangrrlMN
@debit: Be careful out there.
@Yutsano: I gotta make a chocolate run myself.
@S. cerevisiae: High-five!
Tim F.
…and with three field goals, Ben Roethlisberger’s offense pulls ahead of Cincinatti.
Andy K
@Omnes Omnibus:
Need something BIG from the D.
PanAmerican
The weather will turn Pats vs. Bears into a spectacle of missed FG’s and passes going horribly astray.
The College Cup final is on the deuce at 3pm central. Akron vs. Louisville. What the hell is a Zip?
Andy K
Watch out for the fake punt.
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: Let’s see what Flynn can do.
ETA: WTF is going on with the o-line?
JenJen
@asiangrrlMN: Love that song, even if it is like seven years old now. ;-) I keed! Really, do catch him live, and soon. He’s touring down south right now; smart guy, considering the weather.
@Tim F.: Nice!
S. cerevisiae
@PanAmerican: I love watching bad weather games – from my recliner.
Andy K
@Omnes Omnibus:
Well, it is a good d-line…But having Colledge go down (replaced by Spitz, then Lang), and Clifton nicked…
JenJen
Oh dear GAWD, Carson!! Really? Really?
Omnes Omnibus
@Andy K: Well, fuck.
Morbo
Oooh, hoo, hoo, the Lions are about ready to win another football game. Adding: don’t punt it, idiots: long snap it, run around, throw the ball out of bounds.
John - A Motley Moose
Whoooo hoo! The Lions didn’t collapse in the 4th quarter.
JPL
@JenJen: Unfortunately, Carolina is not gonna help you secure that number one pick.
Steeplejack
Justin H. Bieber on a stick! Redskins missed the extra point and are down 17-16 with eight seconds to go. Damn.
ETA: And they’re done. Bucs win after trailing most of the game.
Andy K
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Sorry. That’s gotta hurt. Liked Dirt, if that’s any consolation. Probably not. This song is better suited for a screwball rom-com, I think.
@JenJen: I know! Where has the time gone? If he’s in this area, I will catch him. He’s great.
JenJen
@Andy K:
Save for that infamous Mirror Lake Pee Incident (and those were actual OSU students!), you don’t really believe I couldn’t match you one-for-one with those visiting fan stories, do you? I don’t even live in Columbus, but I could spew volumes just on the novice way in which Michigan fans drive, have accents which make it sound as though the lot of them are expats from Ontario, and suck at tipping their bartenders, before I even got warmed up.
billgerat
Time for Whitehurst. My God, what a miserable game.
Maxwel
I wouldn’t want to face the Bradynaut during the playoffs.
Angry Black Lady
@Yutsano: i’ve avoided that thread for a reason. :)
Yutsano
@Angry Black Lady: Am I wrong for mulling over what I think you might say? Cause I bet it could divert into a righteous rant for the ages.
I haz amazing basil from the store and no food processor. And no I’m not making pesto the old fashioned way.
Angry Black Lady
@Yutsano: honestly, i don’t have the energy, and i don’t have the time over the next couple days to deal with the comment bloodbath that would surely ensue.
