Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Republicans in disarray!

Let there be snark.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

This blog will pay for itself.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Looking like it will be another day of unbearable heat here, but I am still trying to hold off on shutting the windows and starting the AC.

    I don’t understand.

I don’t think “unbearable heat” means what you think it means.

I also don’t remember the last day it wasn’t triple-digits hot in delightful Austin. I also don’t think my AC actually turns off; it’s been so long I don’t remember.

Quit yer whining Cole. I’m with Bob above, it’s freaking hot in south Texas. My AC is never not on and the bill shows it. Too many triple digit days in a row along with what looks to be a never ending drought.

Not with El Nino in effect. At least that’s what I’ve always been told. The high pressure system pushes off the Gulf Coast and “protects” most of coastal TX. Of course the trade off is soul crushing heat, and this year record level droughts. But hey, what’re ya gonna do?

We’re feeling a little persecuted here in S.NV, as our humidity is ALL THE WAY UP to 22%. Get the fainting couch. Air temp around 102. I’m from eastern NE originally, so I’m used to closer to humidity levels around, oh, 85% or so. But I’ve been here long enough that this feels quite muggy. My teens biked out to Lake Mead last night with friends, camped on the beach & are boating today. Ah, youth.

NYC is supposed to get to 89 today, with 41% humidity. So far I’m comfortable with most of the windows and the terrace door open. (I’m glad I bought the optional door screen when the windows and terrace doors were replaced.)

All the windows are on one wall in the living room so I don’t get a breeze in there, but in the bedroom I have windows on two walls and the cross ventilation really captures any breeze.

    July 9, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Cole, you gotta close up the windows as soon as the cool of the morning is gone and it feels hot outside. Otherwise your A/C has to fight the heat & humidity you let in.

Here are the details of the “generosity” of the American offer to stay in Iraq, that will be voted tomorrow.

The information spread by Iraqi politicians, not confirmed by the Iraqi government so far that the debates US-Iraqi is being confidentially to keep large numbers of U.S. forces in Iraq, according to the third paragraph of the security agreement, which states that the duration of land use begins at the date of receipt of the response to 31 / December (December) in 2016, and can extend the period of use after the approval of the parties to it.
A note prepared for this purpose with the number 0048 to the year 2011 to the generosity the next U.S. on Iraqi soil would be as follows:
Basra: This is the temporary site of the consulate area of 40.82 hectares near Basra airport.
At the site of the Basra area of Aviation (14.78) hectares in the Basra airport.
Kirkuk: The branch office of the embassy area of 33.88 hectares near the airport in Kirkuk.
Mosul: The branch of the embassy area of 41.69 hectares near the Mosul airport.
Under the agreement, to be in Baghdad, a facility for police training area of 24.91 hectares, near the Police College and the Ministry of the Interior, in addition to the site of Baghdad’s Air area of 247.07 hectares in the Baghdad airport, as well as an area of 61.7 hectares located within the region, government, green, and be set up to support the embassy.
In the province of Kurdistan, the support facility in Irbil consulate there an area of 108.53 hectares near the airport in Erbil, Arbil, in addition to the site of the airline within an area of 99.9 hectares of the airport. The hectare is equal to ten thousand square meters, and that the vast areas to be filled by Americans will be protected and insured under the Convention, and to undertake the Iraqi Foreign Ministry implementation of the paragraphs of their content and enable the U.S. embassy to obtain and install them in circles real estate to ensure no claim of any other Iraqi or Iraqi citizen Avaidah that land to him.

Sounds like a land grab to me. I doubt the Sadrist Trend is going sit still for this.
I think this is a very bad idea. Muqtada al-Sadr has vowed to raise the (60,000 man in 2008) Mahdi Army to oppose further occupation. And the regional Arab Spring is already breathing down Maliki’s, Karzai’s, and Zardari’s America puppet necks. There are american flags on fire in Islamabad, Kabul, and Baghdad every week now.
10k American troops against an Arab Spring powered resurgent Mahdi Army?
    Place your bets, gentlemen.

Outside Boston it’s a perfect sunny day, and another one on tap for tomorrow. We’ve fucking earned it. My shoulder still aches from the shoveling this winter, and the relentless gray cool spring, but after two years of paying some organic landscape company many hundreds of dollars to give me a nice lawn without killing all living things, the crab grass, moss, thatch and dirt patches are disrupting my equanimity. John – if it’s hotter outside than inside, shut the windows now; it will keep the house cooler for longer.

I find that even on days where the temps get into the high 90s, I can go without A/C for a good portion of the day – by keeping the windows closed to keep the heat out. A/C goes on in afternoon – whenever it reaches 78 inside, I turn it on – and it stays on until I go to bed, when I turn it off. Then it will stay relatively cool inside (below 78) until noon or maybe 1:00 the following day, if I do things like shut doors to rooms on the side of the house where the sun is at that time.

100 years ago everyone knew this stuff. We have to re-learn it since we’ve been spoiled with a/c.

Down here a little north of Baton Rouge we have not had air conditioning for six years. It was not that awful until Gustav blew down our 120 white oak tree that gave us afternoon shade. We are happy that the eye was to the west of us so the wind blew the trees away from the house. If the eye had been on the other side all the trees would have fallen on the house. Plus, Louisiana had the hottest June on record this year so we are going to give in and replace the ac. Last month’s electric bill was a little over sixty dollars, but the heat is finally getting to us.

Does preheating the house intensify the cooling experience or something?

    My question too.

Have you noticed a dramatic decrease in troll posts (ala mac v pc) by mistermix ?
And the theories that Cole got rolled and he’s not very bright but craves page clicks are not exclusive.

I have to smile when reading the electric bills posted here due to a/c. My electric bill is around $145 a month all the time and we don’t use a/c all day cuz no one is home during the day. I live in the much hated Long Island area of Nassau County New York. (Don’t know why its hated so much but I’m sure someone here will tell me.) :-)

    @Cole:

[. . .] I am still trying to hold off on shutting the windows and starting the AC.

Night shift checking in (early again). The week is over. Weekend! Yee-haw! But I digress.

I have been doing a lot of research on this issue, because of my ancient, anemic air conditioner, and I have found that for me, here in NoVa, the transition boundary is around 90° and is heavily dependent on the humidity. Right now the temperature outside is 89°, according to Weather.com, but the humidity is only about 40%, and it is quite bearable. Windows open, no air conditioner on. But I am dressed, uh, casually. Extremely casual. Let’s leave it at that. Yesterday the temp was about the same, but we had some hard rain and the humidity was way up, and it was almost unbearable. Windows closed, A.C. on. (It doesn’t do a great job on cooling, but it does blow out the humidity.)

Once the temp starts pushing 95°, I don’t care what the humidity is. It’s awful. And the A.C. is on, even if only for the placebo effect.

Not sure why the British press scandal involving the Murdoch empire isn’t playing as big here as it is pretty much everywhere else, but it is pretty interesting and has implications for NewsCorp in the US. Some big fish are are already on the hook and now Rupert’s top dog in the UK, Rebekah Brooks, is warning employees of even more horrible allegations to come. Rupert’s son may be brought up on charges for paying hush money and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, is under attack for bringing a former Murdoch editor, Andy Coulson, into the inner sanctum as his press adviser AFTER he had already been arrested once on charges related to illegal phone hacking (he’s just been arrested for the second time yesterday and is out on bail). Now there’s this little gem from the Guardian:

Coulson went on to be cleared by the security vetting team at Downing Street after three in-depth interviews about his professional and personal life. He was given “strap one” status, which allowed him the highest access to top secret material.

Cameron, Andrew Sullivan’s man-crush, brought a known Murdoch spy into the Prime Minister’s office and gave him top security clearance. Is it just me, or does this seem like a really, really bad idea? Murdoch is certainly powerful enough to sweep a lot under the rug, but this might get too ugly even for his cleaning machine.
