    STILLERS!

Opening with the hated Ravens, no less. Can’t wait.

After what will hopefully will be an epic victory on enemy soil, we will be having stuffed green peppers. Got these gorgeous and HUGE peppers at a local farm and I can’t wait to dig in. The sauce will be from our own tomatoes and onions. A little Pinot noir and I’ll be fat and happy.

Steelers vs. Ravens, this is designed to handicap both teams for the next 4-8 games at least. There is approximately a 99% chance one or both teams will suffer a major injury during this game.

Also I apologize to anyone who tried to sign up for bjfl League of Last Chances. We received 12+ inches of rain on Wed here in Mt.Wolf,PA and I lost all 3 of my computers, my modem, and my router in the resulting flash flood.

My sweet dog Bailey took a terrible turn on Friday, spent all day at the vet, we got one last night together at home, and then I had to take him to the vet on Saturday morning to let him go. @jeffreyw: It has been 35 years since I have not had at least one dog. I always have two, and after I lose one, when the time is right, I get another buddy for all of us.

But after my kitty soul mate Quiver dies, the kitty I wanted 4 months later came with a litter mate, so I got both of them, but then I couldn’t afford a second dog. So here I am, not only without Bailey but without any dog at all. Of course, I keep hearing and seeing Bailey everywhere, but that doesn’t make it any better.

The world is just not right for me without a dog. Take a walk? Without a dog? That would be the loneliest thing ever. Water the flowers? Without a dog to help me? Heartbreaking. For 13 years, Bailey was always at my side. For everything. I could barely make myself go to bed last night. It just felt so wrong.

My brother wanted to wager and was willing to take Indy and I just couldn’t. It felt like cheating somehow. Darn..morality sucks. He also wanted the Bears and that one, I passed. The Falcons look like they are still playing a preseason game.

Enjoy it while you can. The links between football and irreversible brain trauma are now pretty well established. Any parent who lets their kid play this game should be reported to Child Protective Services.

Your grandkids won’t even know what football was, and the biggest week of their sporting year will be the last week in May, with the Champions League final and the final four in NCAA lacrosse.

There’s some sloppy damn play out there; makes ya wonder if the lockout might be influencing things now that the first stringers play more than just a series or two.

Maybe if your grandkids grow up in Baltimore. Otherwise, not so much. Although they could end up with names that should belong to porn stars, like Virginia’s Steele Stanwick.

Check out the stats for participation growth at the high school level. The future is carrying a stick.

@Corner Stone: I, fortunately, don’t have cable or satellite or any thing else resembling a wanton waste of money so I don’t get ESPN 8 though I miss not getting WRC, hasn’t been here for years. NASCAR is fast beginning to resemble he NFL what with all the “competition” yellows. Haven’t watched in years.

  125. 125.

    sneezy

    September 11, 2011 at 4:02 pm

    @Allen:

4 hours to get in what, at best, has 30 minutes of action.

You can barely get to 30 minutes even if you count replays. Here’s a breakdown from a WSJ story from January 15, 2010:

    11 minutes: actual playing time
    17 minutes: replays
    67 minutes: players standing around
    75 minutes: commercials

That’s not comprehensive, because it only adds up to 170 minutes. I’m not sure how long a typical NFL broadcast lasts, but it’s longer than that. So I guess the remainder of the time is announcers, sideline reporters, shots of the crowd, etc.
