Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Everybody saw this coming.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

People are complicated. Love is not.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

But he is still with us, you know. Those who have touched us never really leave us. He was like a priest or a Boy Scout leader that way.

We’ll keep Yutsano in our thoughts for his surgery tomorrow, and congratulations to J.W. Hammer on the engagement!

And I just remembered my own news–I’m a finalist for a new position in the Regional Operations Center at work, that would be a grade increase to GS-12 and possibly a shift differential if I get selected for the night shift.  I’m getting a little old for the night shift, but it’s a 10% differential, and 4x10hr shifts with three days off per week, so I could live with it for a while anyway.

But nowhere near as important as the other two.

Big day tomorrow. Have to get up at 4:30 AM to be at the hospital by 6. Then it all happens. Now I’m feeling a bit more nervous.

What’s with the Boy Scout reference? Has there been a wave of gay Boy Scout leaders molesting kids–outside of the paranoid imaginations of the homophobic crowd, I mean?

Steve Tilley (r), the Speaker of the Missouri House, had a thing or two to say about intolerant liberals at the double secret unveiling of the Rush Limbaugh bust yesterday in the House chamber:

Speaker Steve Tilley (r): ….But these aren’t the kinds of things that the radical liberal groups want to make known when they talk about Rush. Instead these liberals who try to put forth the illusion that they believe in a philosophy of tolerance or understanding, they’re anything but tolerant. And they’re anything but understanding. But fortunately there are only a handful of them here in Missouri. I think I read where the latest anti-Rush rally in Columbia actually broke single digits. [laughter] Which, Rush, it’s actually an improvement because they had an anti-Rush rally at the Capitol where there were more media than protesters….

Does anyone think that the general public will ever have direct access to that bust of Rush Limbaugh? Just asking.

Somehow Charles Pierce finds time to write about sports. Here he tells the story of a Arizona high school girl second baseman’s baseball team who won a state championship because the other team refused to take the field against her. Arizona is getting to be a very strange place.

Bad as our elections and politics are, at least we keep to a simple and rigid 2- and 4-year cycle: they aren’t as “lucky” in Greece: the third party leader in nine days who’s tried to form a government has failed – again – so they’re going to have another election next month.

Great: maybe they can get even more parties into Parliament with even smaller shares of the seats (so the blame for the impending economic maybe-meltdown can be shared around even wider….) !

Open thread? I’ll do a book report.

I finally got around to reading Stephenson’s new book, Reamde. Pretty good on the whole, an action packed, fun story. Yes, it relies on implausible coincidences for much of the drama, but there were only a few places where it notably interfered with the enjoyment of the crisp writing.

There were other problems with it though. All of the good guys are exactly alike, and it doesn’t matter if they’re dope smuggling gaming CEOs, Hungarian hackers, or Eritrean fugees. Everyone is a quiet, gun loving, live and let live type who feels naked without a connection to a worldwide communications network yet they actively despise the idea of communicating with other humans.

Stephenson also seems to have lived in Seattle for years without ever meeting a tree hugger type that wasn’t a figment of his imagination. None actually appear in the text, except as scoffed at by our quiet heroes. Does he really think that any of the hikers in Seattle think mountain lions are cute and cuddly and wouldn’t hurt a fly?

Finally, the book ends with a nearly 100 page running gun battle, which is just about the dullest thing I can imagine short of a galtian lecture on moochers. Seriously, I zipped through the preceding 800 pages and took three days to read the last 100 because I would set it down every page or two.

Despite those shortcomings, it really is a fun read. MMORPGs, British spies, jihadis, good guy Chinese hackers, russian mafia … Stephenson just threw everything in and made an entertaining stew.

Good luck tomorrow! I’ve only ever had one surgery, but once was more than enough. I had a weird breakdown during the prep where I burst out crying because the nurse announced that the shot of relaxant in her hand had to be done in the tuchus. For some reason, I was mentally prepared to have a shot in the arm, but not one in the butt, so I freaked out and she had to come back 10 minutes later when I calmed down.

    @IrishGirl:

Yay! It sounds like Dusty will have a nice comfortable retirement home while you get everything else sorted out. It sucks to have to admit when an animal will be better off with someone else taking care of him/her, but sometimes it has to be done.

Me, I’m in El Paso, TX having driven something like 700+ miles today. Just arrived, checked in, and trotted across the street to the only open restaurant in the area, a funky BBQ joint where I am stuffing my face with shredded brisket and pork and washing everything down with miniatures of Frontera merlot. Eat your heart out, jeffreyw.

@soonergurnt: I’m probably older than you (59) and have been working nights for 18 years. I went back to days for a year, and just couldn’t hack it- I’m only good seeing the sun rise when I’m on my way home to bed. I completely lost my ability to get up in the morning. The crucial thing is to be inflexible about getting your sleep. Some people think “I’m free during the day! I can get all kinds of stuff done!” and don’t get their sleep. Those folks don’t last long. My husband used to school the kids on when it’s ok to wake Mommy. Bleeding? Nope. Dripping blood? Well, ok. There were enough instances of an angry Mommy flying down the stairs in a bathrobe to make them think twice about waking Mommy unnecessarily.
The odd offshoot is that most of my kids are night owls too. When I get a 4am phone call at work, my coworkers ask “Omigod, what’s wrong?” and it’s usually something like a complaint that someone else left dirty dishes in the sink. And we often have good latenight talks.
    Good luck on the application.

@Jay C: As much as the parliamentary system has its faults, I am growing to like it more and more every day over our own extremely dysfunctional system. The ability of multiple parties to compete is a really nice feature. Even thought the parliamentary system is supposedly devoid of checks and balances, it seems that there are much more effective checks and balances in these systems than our own–perhaps the result of multi-party coalitions. Parliamentary governments seem to rarely ram through unpopular legislation, while still having the power to pass laws that are necessary. Perhaps it’s the dilution of power that prevents the tyranny of the majority. I don’t know, but if the government does go too far out of line, they can always cancel it with a no confidence vote and have a quick, cheap election.

I used to really admire the American system, but since a bunch of nihilists have destroyed it’s functionality, I’ve really grown to admire the parliamentary system. It’s designed to prevent excess, while preventing the minority from taking over as well.

But, there’s more. Rush Limbaugh had something to add at the end of his remarks:

Rush Limbaugh (r): ….I’m sorry I, I take it for granted but in, the Speaker when he announced this, uh, and I’m sure that any of you in the room [inaudible] your share of it. But the Speaker’s office and people in his office and the Speaker himself have been under assault for wanting to do this and, believe me, uh, it’s, it’s east to s, you know what, Rush, be better off me trying this some other year. He didn’t do that. Um, he hung in, it was tough. He did not give them any quarter. Uh, laughed at them when they called his office, which is what you have to do ’cause they’re deranged. [laughter] They literally are deranged, our friends, so called friends on the other side of the aisle are deranged. This is when my family now forgets I’m here. [laughter] Uh, but, but, he stood up to it and, uh, in fact, enjoyed it and threw right back at them….

My husband announced several years ago that he was sick of spending so much on gas. He was going to get a bike and ride to work. Since he was about 50 pounds overweight and considered the outdoors something he had to endure to get to the next building, I said “sure you are, dear.” But he got the bike, saved money on commuting, lost the 50 pounds, started doing 40 mile rides on the weekend, does multi-day long rides on vacation, and is on the board of the local bike club. This from a guy who’d never been athletic in his life. He never does something when he can overdo.
So go for it. It might surprise you.

But when they told me in the ER that the infected puncture wound on my right hand was going to require surgery under general anesthesia, the prep nurse looked over the grossly swollen injury and said, wow that’s ugly, before starting to attach the IV drip to my right wrist. She was pretty embarrassed when I asked if immobilizing the arm the surgeons wouldn’t be cutting on might be a better idea, but in her defense, it was the end of a 12-hour weekend shift for her. So I entertained myself by singing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas straight through, all the parts. (Gondoliers, Yeomen, and Iolanthe, for those who may care. Plus Anna Russell.)

You aren’t crazy, unless you are in the “good” medical system the doctors can be a mess. There are really three tiers of doctor. The best doctors can afford not to take insurance. they are good enough and high enough in demand it’s a cash business. Top in their field but you pay for the care.

The next group is mostly private insurance. Still pays well, not as much, and you have to pay people to deal with the companies and wait for your payments. It’s a nightmare. My ex works for an insurance company and it’s a nightmare for most doctors.

The last tier are the kind that accept medicare, medicaid, tricare, mostly LOL doctors, you never know what they might do. Those insurance policies pay for shit, the paper work is beyond insane, and it takes forever.

What a doctor accepts is a pretty good indicator of how good he or she is. I sure as fuck wouldn’t go to a doctor that took medicare.

Of course, the only way out of this is single player and majorly slashing doctors salaries so it’s no longer a prestiege job. But I doubt we are ready to do that.

My mom is a blond woman who looks like she’s in her mid 40’s, short hair, most likely will have on a floral print shirt and shorts since that’s her typical summer gear. But to help narrow things down, she’ll be in the Orthopedic center waiting room most likely.

BTW my mom is SS eligible. But she does NOT look it. I got good genes. :)

Hey bud, good luck tomorrow! You’ll be in my thoughts.

    @Steve in DC:

Speaking as someone with extensive experience in an International Surgical Unit with all manner of surgeons and physicians, some private, some clinicians, some who accepted public dollars and some who didn’t, I can say that you might be right about doctors who cater to people who are so rich that they pay cash, but when it comes to those lower two tiers, as usual, YOU DON’T KNOW WTF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

Ah, that never gets old . . .

When I go to bed late–like tonight, apparently–I still get up early in the morning (6:00-8:00), but then I’ll feel the need for a siesta in the late afternoon, even if only for an hour.

But then some days I am able to get to bed at a (relatively) decent hour–anything before midnight or a little after–get up early and stay up and active the whole day.

Right now my issue is that I have little control over the fluctuation between “normal” days and night-owl days. Can’t seem to predict the latter, and they just sort of happen. It’s like I’m in the grip of some macro cycle that I can’t see the shape of. And it’s exacerbated by not having a regular job where I have to be someplace at a set time (or even a variable time) each day. What freelance work I have right now can be done anytime.

I’m talking mostly about highly paid specialists, which is where your $$$$ costs go up fast to get fast and quality work done. Hospitals are an entirely different issue. For these doctors cash > private insurance > medicare/medicaid. In terms of amount of money they get, time to get it, and cost of staff to process the work to get their money.

Some hospitals are also the same way to some extent, if you think you’re getting the same surgeons and the same care as rich people out of the same hospital you’re on crack.

Though if you’re convinced that our “healthcare system” is completely agnostic and ethical and we all get the same care once we are in the room and the amount of money we can toss it doesn’t matter you’re free to feel that. Go vote for Mittens then, he thinks it’s all the same as well.

Yeah, you’re full of shit, as usual. G works for a home infusion company and they prefer Medicare/Tricare patients because they actually get paid ON TIME and don’t have to deal with the bullshit that private insurance companies put them through. Everything from private insurance gets denied at least once because that’s how they operate.

They do hate Bush Medicare patients though (aka Medicare Part D) because the Republicans wrote it so it’s much more difficult to get reimbursed for than ordinary Medicare. But even Part D is better than private insurance that may or may not pay, depending on how the asshole working at the insurance company is feeling that day.

I beg to differ with your opinion about insurance and doctors.

My Ms J R was in ICU for 2 weeks plus w/ pneumonia and septic shock from September to November. Our family Dr rounded up the best doctors in the hospital for Ms’s care, and they pulled her through with multiple chest tubes, surgery to remove necrotic lung tissue, etc.

Survival rate for septic shock nationwide is less than 40% and she’s gardening the rocks in the front of the house already. We were at the beach and she said “I don’t feel so good” and we were out of there for home. Then she got confused from lack of O2.

All those Drs took medicare, and it’s a dam good thing! The hospital bill alone was over $300K, and the Dr bills on top of that. We aren’t bankrupt after, just a little more broke than usual.

I don’t think price and quality of care are related, at least here. I have no respect for greed in my doctors!

    So hurray for Medicare!

One more REAMDE opinion, speaking of the first Stephenson book I didn’t start to reread the instant I finished it. Maybe it was a parody, but the thing read like some kind of paranoid fantasy where he wanted to convince himself that building a bunker in Montana to be safe from Muslim Terrorists who could come right across the Canadian border was a good idea. It felt like he was losing his grip on the modern world.
