Since I became reacquainted with the $500 dollar towel rack (aka the exercise bike) and started working out, walking more, and spending days in the yard futzing around with my plants and garden, I really, really struggle to stay up this late. I just spent the last hour listening to the Who through shitty earphones (Rosie ate my Bose), so I am off to bed, but I do really love this song:
The other day I spent the whole day working listening to nothing but Yes. I didn’t realize I had enough albums to make it the whole day, woke up singing the roundabout the next morning, and I remain convinced that Oasis sucks and you kids really missed out.
All I have to say is “Oop ack,” but you young fuckers missed out on that, too.

Oop ack! My brother! I had the Boingers record!

This should be a tag.
Sounds like you’re taking care of yourself better. Going to bed earlier is not a bad thing at all.

I made the horrific discovery tonight that my parents are out of oregano. It would have improved dinner considerably, though no one believes me.
Watching classic Doctor Who and doing pretty much nada.

Reposted form last night because it is so fucking awesome. I found this: The Clash, live in Paris, February 27, 1980. Links in three parts: first, second, and third.
You can thank me later.

not true. Am well acquainted with Bill da Cat and all the joys of Bloom County (“there’s no such thing as banana walrus wafers!”) and am only… well, a lady doesn’t like to reveal too much, so let’s call it born-in-the-Carter-administration. Towards the end.
Does that make me a young ‘un? Or am I in denial?
Omnes Omnibus
@BonnyAnne: Younger than I am, if that helps.

The Clash + the Who made me think of “Rough Boys,” which at the time was touted as being about Townshend’s friendship with punk bands like the Clash, and which now makes me wonder why anyone was surprised when Townshend came out as bisexual.

I have all but one of the Bloom County Complete Collection Books. I also had a couple of Bloom County T-shirts. I loved my “Saved By Fundamentally Oral Bill” shirt.

I was looking through old yearbooks and discovered a picture of myself in my Bill the Cat t-shirt in the 8th grade.
And I wondered why no boys ever asked me out …

@Omnes Omnibus: I’ll thank you now. But I have to bookmark – my wife needs her latest course proposal reviewed for things that make sense only in Korean.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: Thinking back to 8th grade, the question I have is did you have boobs underneath the t-shirt?

Wow, JC. Thanks. This had literally passed from my memory. I did a lot of calculus problems to this song, over and over again, sometime in the late Carter administration…
For such a young buck, you did a great job of getting yourself educated in 60s tunes. We had older brothers. How did you do it?
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Intimidating ones, apparently. Not the kind you take home to mother.
I guess the mix of nerdiness and overabundant anatomy was too confusing.
Omnes Omnibus

@dollared: Some of us had young parents.

I also realized years later that I had four older brothers, at least one of whom was on a first-name basis with all of the police officers in our town (and not because he was an Explorer). In retrospect, it made a lot more sense why all of the boyfriends I had in high school didn’t go to my high school.

@Yutsano:
What can be done with oregano at an extremely-basic-cooking level? I bought a tiny pot last summer on impulse & never did anything with it. The plant overwintered and is now threatening to smother the tomato plants on either side. Is there such a thing as oregano pesto?
Yutsano
@Anne Laurie: Oregano is very powerful fresh, so it can be incorporated into a lot of Mexican and Italian dishes but no more than one teaspoon. However, it can be dried and stored for months beautifully. It’s a great addition to tomato sauce as well.
Omnes Omnibus
I have disappeared into a black hole of Elvis Costello on YouTube.

@Omnes Omnibus: I missed that last night. Oh my god, that is absolutely fucking awesome. One of my biggest regrets is that I had an opportunity to see the Clash back when I was in high school, and didn’t do it.
Omnes Omnibus
@The prophet Nostradumbass: I missed the Clash live, but I did see Joe with the Mescaleros on the Rock Art and the X-ray Style tour. The stage was done with three mics across the front of the stage and Joe was Joe.

hell these days is a real life manifestation of Binkley’s closet….
there seems to be some continual search in progress for finding just the right perfect pitch liberal freakout tipping point in which the right can finally manifest a violent response from the left. One of the absolute weirdest things about The Clash is that their album “Give ’em Enough Rope” was produced by Sandy Pearlman, best known for producing Blue Öyster Cult. Now, I like BÖC too, but they’re not much like The Clash.
Dollared
@Omnes Omnibus: I did that about six months ago. Still have Oliver’s Army in my head. In that same vein, I had not known about Amy Winehouse in any detail until I got lost following the Specials into the depths of YouTube. I always learn about stuff about five years too late….

I’d just like to know how a guy who is the age of my first kid digs all these groups who were basically the soundtrack of my youth…I mean, WTF? Did you go all reverse Rumplestiltskin or something and wake up in the 60’s/70’s or whatevers?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It was a fucking great time for music. Cheers, dude!

@dance around in your bones: Well, it’s not like it’s impossible to like stuff that existed before you did. I mean…personally I am way more baffled by stupid young people who refuse to acknowledge the existence of music, movies, etc that’s any older than they are. They are why we have so many remakes of movies that were made perfectly fine the first time.
Also too, for me, I was raised by music-loving hippies, grew up listening to music all the time, going to concerts, etc, so while I like a lot of newer stuff that they would hate, I also love a lot of their music too.

@hildebrand: Yes, I’d agree with that. I liked Steve Dallas, too, as a yahoo, but I think Breathed ruined him in the post-Bloom County strips.

@dance around in your bones: Oh, I know it wasn’t criticism. Sorry if I came across harshly. Just that I’ve gotten that sort of reaction a lot from older folks, probably because most of my peers are as I described, rather than more like myself.

Nah, I didn’t take it harshly….I think it’s great when people (of any age) recognize excellent music….of any generation. I just wondered a bit where JC got his 60’s bug, ’cause it seems pretty prevalent, what with Little Feat, Yes, the Stones, the Who and etc.
It’s a GOOD thing!
And – sweet dreams, I’m hitting the sack too. I hope….dang insomnia.

@Amir Khalid:
I remember when Opus was auditioning for a punk band by playing the tuba.
As I recall, his audition song went something like this:
“Wham bam, thank you Nell,
I’m on the Amtrack to Hell!”
Then he played the tuba:
“A-whoompa-whoompa-whoompa!”
And the leader of the band said to Opus, “You’re in, kid!”
And Opus looks at the 4th wall to us and says, “I think I wet my pants!”
“Bloom County” and “The Far Side.”
Ah, those were GREAT!
Good times… Good times…

And thanks for the video, John.
“Quadrophenia” is my favorite album of ALL TIME!!!
And yeah, I DO have an idea of what that says about me. :-)
FlipYrWhig
Somewhere in the Dëthtöngue/Billy and the Boingers sequence the band reads a review in a magazine that includes a phrase like “transom of your consciousness” and has a panel of silence before someone says, “Yeah, but do we kick butt?”
Also there’s a moment when they play a song for a record-company head whose last line is “Let’s roll over Lionel Richie with a tank.” I think “tank” rhymes with “stank.”
FlipYrWhig
@dance around in your bones: @c u n d gulag: Funny enough, in college — which was the late ’80s — I used both the Elvis Costello best-of and Quadrophenia as music for foolin’ around to.

I noticed on Yahoo some story about “Obama voters disrupt Romney rally” or some such, just by showing up, apparently. Daily Kos reported on a bus full of Romney voters honking its horn on and on at an Obama gathering–crickets from Yahoo, natch. @The prophet Nostradumbass:
Very true, but Sandy Pearlman also produced the first album by the Dictators (Go Girl Crazy!), a New York proto-punk band. So, to those CBS Records execs, Sandy Pearlman was the closest thing they had to a producer with a “punk” pedigree.
snarkyspice
You’re younger than me. No way you shouldn’t appreciate Oasis! For me all those guys you like died when punk happened. I was 16 years old and I sold every hippie/prog rock record I owned and never looked back. Now I’m older, I realize that all music has merit of it makes someone happy, but I still don’t own any Pink Floyd and think anyone who doesn’t get the Arctic Monkeys is living a sad excuse for a life :)
