Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

We still have time to mess this up!

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

How stupid are these people?

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

I really should read my own blog.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Sitting at a Chili’s trying to write. I’ve got an idea for a story but I’m struggling to get it started.

Last night I finished reading Lord of Emperors, the second of two books in Guy Gavriel Kay’s series The Sarantine Mosaic. (The first is Sailing to Sarantium.) It was very, very good. My favorite Kay book is inevitably the one I just finished reading, and this was no exception. However, in terms of its impact, I think that these two rank right up there with Tigana as the most powerful pieces I’ve read by him.

Goddamn, I want to be able to write like he does.

Just finished mixing the crust for Tamara’s blueberry pie recipe (although I use a 4-2-1 ratio for the crust) and it’s chilling in the fridge along with the filling. About to start making 12-pepper chili. (Note: use stew beef, not ground beef, in all chilis that use beef.) Think I’ll try throwing a little mole in it this time.

Block party starts at 4, I’m one of three people bringing chili, so it’s a cook-off. :)

The NYT had a recipe for the most popular Uruguayan sandwich, a chivito, today. Since I am an America hating liberal, that’s what I decided to make for our July 4th food. Went to the store to get some things and decided to make my own Portuguese rolls for the sandwich. Got a nice recipe from King Arthur flour and it is rising right now.

Will be making some chimichurri sauce in a little while for the sandwich. They sound great: a thin grilled piece of steak, topped with cooked bacon, tomato, lettuce, mayo, a slice of hard boiled egg, roasted red peppers, grilled onions and a dollop of chimichurri sauce, all on a Portuguese roll.

Thinking about a dessert. Maybe a fruit thing. Or there is still some chocolate gelato that I made last weekend left over. May as well get that used up.

I’m with the Soonergrunt on the fireworks, we’re fairly close to the local shoot but I stay away from the crowd. I watched this one from the river bank in 86:

Fire Chief’s Death Leaves Edgewater Stunned
July 6, 1986|By Jay Hamburg of The Sentinel Staff

EDGEWATER — The fireworks explosion that killed Volunteer Fire Chief George Kennedy knocked a dozen men 15 feet through the air and blew out flames from railroad flares used to light the shells.

It also snuffed out the happy, patriotic mood that Kennedy — who headed the July 4 displays for more than 10 years — had tried to kindle in the 15,000 who watched from the Indian River shoreline while he and his men lit up the sky Friday night from a tiny dot of land known as Firecracker Island in Volusia County.”

All around just a very strong movie.

A Georgia company that sold fireworks to Edgewater, where Fire Chief George Kennedy was killed Friday, also provided fireworks to Madeira Beach and Safety Harbor, where firefighters were injured in similar explosions.Fire officials said they did not know where the fireworks were manufactured or if shipments to the three cities were from the same factory. As Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department officials and Kennedy’s family completed plans Monday morning for his funeral, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and police continued their investigation into the tragedy.

If it doesn’t rain tonight (which I actually hope it does), I’ll wander outside to the lakeside at my apartment complex and watch municipal fireworks. They usually do a good display, and even though the staging area is a couple of miles from where I live, there’s an excellent sight-line. Far enough away not to be ear-splitting, close enough to be able to say “Ooh aah” and mean it.

@Raven: Our association puts on a big show. We had some friends who lived right next to where they set them off that would have a huge BBQ. 10 yrs ago or so we were laying ther watching them ( they’re directly over your head) and these guys in fire suits come hauling ass toward us screaming ‘don’t look up!’ one of the racks had fallen over just as it started to fire and it was pointed toward us. I threw the blanket over the wife and kids and laid on top of them. The mortars were going off direct over us I don’t know how high but it was deafening, with burning bits and chunks of the casing landing on us. A good 100 mortars went off this way. Nobody got badly hurt but the place looked like a war zone. It was very exciting.

Getting ready to fire up the smoker. Eating late because one guest is working today. Sick people don’t stop being sick on holidays. Working on trimming out the new doors still. Will continue a good week longer what with all of he painting needed.

    1. Indian style limeade, use key limes instead of lemons and add a dash of rock salt you get in Indian Grocery stores (not sure if it is from the Himalayas) can be spiked with gin or vodka if you want.

    2. Watermelon juice, cut up watermelon in bite size chunks add
a dash of salt and some sugar, the night before. you will have water melon juice, the next day, add some lemon or lime just before serving. Is good with vodka.
