    I was once on a discussion forum where there was a regular poster whose grammar, spelling, and other aspects of their writing were flawless–except for the fact that he relentlessly replaced every. single. instance. of the second person pronoun (regardless of its inflection) with some variant on the “u” shorthand. So “you” became “u”, “your” became “ur”, “you’re” became “u’re”, and so on every other inflection of “you” in the dictionary.

    And he would write these big, long, otherwise decent posts in this style… that were physically painful to read.

    One of the most painful things about listening to Hannity this afternoon was the amount of WOMEN calling in DEFENDING Akin, one women went on and on about women having to be relaxed and “in the mood” in order to conceive, and that Akin was right that it was highly unlikely that a woman would conceive as a result of a rape. Another woman called in and said that what Akin meant about “legitimate rape” was to distinguish real rape from “statutory rape”, where a 17 year old willingly has sex with a 21 year old man and when her parents found out about it he is charged with “rape”. I just kept wanting to slam my head against my desk when I heard them. There really is no reaching some people.

    ETA one of my local Tea Party people called into the radio station today to tell the RWNJ radio host “as men we have no business discussing abortion or rape, we will never have to deal with it, so as far as I am concerned let the women decide” I got a little tingle up my leg when I heard that.

    RE: the PPP poll out today, I saw this over at Sully’s today:

    A new poll from PPP(D) gives Akin 44%, McCaskill 43%. The pollster says there’s “little difference” from before, as does Josh Marshall. Normally I don’t like to comment on one poll. But this interpretation is likely to be erroneous for two reasons.
    __
    First, PPP is making a comparison with its own previous poll in mid-May, showing the same numerical margin (Akin 45, McCaskill 44). It is more appropriate to make a comparison with polls conducted after the August 6th primary, since after a primary a nominee’s support firms up considerably.
    __
    Akin was +3% (median, n=3) before August 6th, and +11% (n=1) afterward — an 8-point bounce. So if he is unchanged since May, then he must have lost all this gain. An 8-point loss in one day is an enormous drop. Another comparison that makes the same point is that going from +11% to +1% (PPP) is a 10-point drop. Again, this is very large.

    This analysis shows a very large change in one day.

    @jwb: I’ve listened to Limbaugh off and on for years. I think the woman who called was the real deal. I know no one gets through that hasn’t been appropriately screened, but sometimes they slip up. Several years ago someone got through and Limbaugh lost his temper and yelled at the guy and told him he’d lied to his screener and said he wanted to talk about X and then he actually talked about Y and he was a liar with no morals to try to fool Limbaugh like that, and then he hung up on him and went to commercial break. It was pretty funny. So I know sometimes their screening doesn’t work.

    The woman who called Limbaugh today talked for far too long and had way too much info to be a paid plant. Those types just make a comment and hang up usually. She knew her stuff. I suppose someone could be coached to do that, but she kept switching the subject on Limbaugh and confusing him.

    I think Litlebritdifrnt heard the caller too. Maybe she can weigh in.

    @Violet: I think Limbaugh was trying to position himself with this caller. If she was the real deal, then she didn’t lie to the screener, and the show made the choice to go with her. In any event, whether scripted or not—I still think it was scripted—it was a call that Limbaugh wanted to deal with, and the question to ask is why. I think it’s because it allows Limbaugh to equivocate: he seems to be supporting the party line but he also allows himself to accede to the basic correctness of a more conservative position. Moreover, it is a woman expressing the viewpoint—just as with Hannity. On this issue, that is surely no accident. What do women want? Well, there she is—not Limbaugh who is in fact seeming to resist—telling us: she wants what Akin is offering.

    @jwb: I agree with your basic premise that nothing is unscripted. But sometimes the calls don’t go as expected. I do think they chose to go with this woman, probably because she was an older-sounding woman and they figured she’d be polite and easy to steamroll. She was polite, but she kept changing the subject on Limbaugh and forcing him to regroup.

    Normally the caller just says their piece and Limbaugh responds and the caller might get another chance to speak, but usually not. This one was different and she wasn’t buying what he was selling, no matter how many times she shifted her tune.

    The whole thing could be a sham. I don’t know. He was really badgering her that Akin should go and she was polite to him, but wouldn’t agree. Maybe it was all to prove that “women supported Akin”, but since Limbaugh called for him to leave, I am not sure how that helps support Limbaugh’s point or make him look powerful.
