Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

In my day, never was longer.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Books are my comfort food!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Have any of you been following this whole Steve Cohen paternity issue? The entire thing is just bizarre, and while I normally would think the worst, if you watch Cohen in the video at the link, I actually believe him.

Ok. So Obama comes out to talk about the Martin case. ABC interrupts programming to broadcast it, but only a couple of minutes of what he says. Then they bring in the ‘legal scholars’. And I shut it off. I am so tired of having these idiots interpret for me what someone said. Let me listen and I’ll decide. A-holes.

I haven’t, but I was amused to learn that one of his Twitter problems was him flirting with Cyndi Lauper.

I gotta say, the maintaining a relationship with her thing is nice. It seems they developed a father-daughter relationship regardless of what the DNA says.

    From the article:

“I didn’t have children, I was thrilled to have a daughter, and I didn’t want in any way at all for her to think that I was questioning the relationship or trying to avoid the relationship.”

    and

“I care about Victoria greatly, I have her pictures in my office. She’s a very sweet young lady. For three-and-a-half years, I had a daughter, and it was nice to care about somebody and share,” he added.

Sounds like he wishes he had kids and was just enjoying having a daughter and now is sad he doesn’t. That’s a kind of sad story.

Amen. I’m sick of the news people deciding what “the narrative” is. I’ll decide, thank you very much.

Look at this…he simply assumed he was a father based on the timing, he fessed up, takes the responsible position, fully accepts her as his daughter.

He did the moral thing. And the assholes in DC assumed the worst.

Nuke the Village from space. Only way to be sure.

There is no reason he can’t continue to have a relationship with this young woman if they both want to continue it. Non story in my view.

We do but older homosexual couples don’t call it “adoption” any more.

Haven’t been following it because I don’t know (and don’t care) who Steve Cohen is. I assume since the media is treating him as someone that everyone in the country should know, he’s a NY congressman?

Did the woman think she was his daughter? Coz if she wasn’t interested in pursuing a relationship with him then his behavior is strange & maybe a little creepy. If she was reciprocating the relationship then it’s just a little odd.

He’s my rep from Memphis TN. Always been glad to have him as a rep, as most Memphians are. We are deep, deep blue in a sea of red. Marsha Blackburn has the district next to his. Nuff said.

Yes, Steve Cohen is from Tennessee, and as a Tennessean let me tell you, he’s our sole progressive voice in Washington and the Teanuts here HATE HATE HATE him for that. So they’re always trying to find a scandal on him that will stick. The more they try, the less successful they get.

This only became a “thing” because they tried to make an Anthony Weiner scandal out of his Tweet during the SOTU this winter, claiming he was “creep-Tweeting with a young model.” That blew up big time when it was revealed she was his daughter. The RWers then hilariously tried to claim Cohen was a “deadbeat dad” for his daughter’s childhood.

Then they tried to make a deal out of him supposedly “creep-Tweeting” with Cyndi Lauper in April. Cohen just won’t give them the scandal they want and boy are they pissed!

Yes, I believe him on the daughter thing. He only found out about her three years ago.

Keith, you spent more time composing your snarky post that assumes Rep Cohen is a New Yorker than it would have taken for you to actually read the very first words of the article, which are:

    “Rep. Steve Cohen (Dem., Tenn.)”

fwiw, spent many years in memphis (just saw big star documentary and drowned in nostalgia!), and as it happens, steve is an old friend of mine, not close but we have loads of close mutual friends (and he’s in that documentary, by the by, paying tribute on the house floor to alex chilton).

and yes, steve is a genuinely very very nice and very very genuine guy. have not asked him about his daughter, tho did contact him with congrats when he announced it; he seemed so thrilled. now this, not even sure how to approach him on this, but will likely say nothing at all. seems like time for a kind of grieving to me.

but, anyone who’s interested should google him for the several youtubes of cool things he’s said on the floor, not least of which was his comparison of the GOP ACA trash fest with nazi propaganda. he got hammered, and – much to my dismay and fury – by jon stewart, of all people. i’m still waiting for stewart to revisit that incident, now that we have even more abundant evidence of just how true steve’s statement was. and is.

many more speeches like that one; he’s just a great guy. hope this whole story gets dropped soon. (tho, did everyone else notice how charlie rose salivated at the prospect of “more to the story”? disgusting.)
