Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

We still have time to mess this up!

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

You cannot shame the shameless.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Wednesday Morning Open Thread: Shana Tovah!

.

Rosh Hashanah, which quite sensibly begins the New Year with the onset of autumn, starts at sunset this evening. Happy 5774 to those who will be celebrating, and may everyone’s year be as sweet as apples dipped in honey!

President Obama is setting off, by way of Stockholm, for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, where he is scheduled to meet with human rights activists. President Putin did a snarky AP interview, via NYMag:

… Putin said he felt sorry that President Barack Obama canceled a one-on-one meeting in Moscow that was supposed to have happened before the summit. But he expressed hope the two would have serious discussions about Syria and other issues in St. Petersburg.

“President Obama hasn’t been elected by the American people in order to be pleasant to Russia. And your humble servant hasn’t been elected by the people of Russia to be pleasant to someone either,” he said of their relationship….

What else is on today’s agenda?

I guess Putin doesn’t understand that the civilized world is not happy with Russia’s anti-gay laws. He’ll figure it out soon.

    @Manyakitty: Interested!

I made productive use of my day making a tumblr for my department. A little part of my soul died in the process.

It’s got basically no content right now but here, have a foetal archaeology tumblr.

@TheMightyTrowel: Great start! I’ll post pics as soon as I can. Right now, I’m cursing the first cool, dry weather we’ve had in weeks–slowest rise ever! I kick-started it in the oven with the pilot light for a minute or two, so I’m hoping to start shaping the special round “bird” loaves soon (maybe by 7?). It’s usually braided, but for Rosh Hashanah, my family always makes round ones–one with raisins and one plain. I’m gonna be late for work. Oh well.

    @JPL:

He is Putin, he doesn’t care about the others.

This is true. But he does represent the kind of “managed democracy” that a significant percentage of people in this country wish we were because, you know, regular democracy is just so messy and stuff.

Three young ladies in Cleveland, who lives were forever changed, lived in captivity for ten years. Castro couldn’t take a month in captivity. What a coward.

Spent some time yesterday (and boy, am I feeling it now) digging up this crap, some of which was 3 or 4 feet in diameter at the base.

Think have now gotten all the infestations out from the sloping ground (which has scorpions hiding in the ground cover). Still have lots to dig up and remove down to and including the roots on level areas, but that should be somewhat less taxing.

After that, the mounds right next up against trees or PVC water lines, where digging is not the best plan. Going to use an industrial size Sawzall on those and paint what’s left above ground with undiluted Round-up.

your humble servant hasn’t been elected by the people of Russia

Heh. Lots of Russians that agree with that part of your statement.

@JPL: Yep. In this case, the coward demonstrated the most sincere form of self-criticism. I’m glad my tax dollars don’t have to support warehousing him for another 30-40 years. Just goes to show what a weak, spineless piece of garbage he was.

Sensibly? Um, no. I think the Chinese do it sensibly: they start the new year in spring.

    Anyway, L’Shana Tovah!
