Rosh Hashanah, which quite sensibly begins the New Year with the onset of autumn, starts at sunset this evening. Happy 5774 to those who will be celebrating, and may everyone’s year be as sweet as apples dipped in honey!
President Obama is setting off, by way of Stockholm, for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, where he is scheduled to meet with human rights activists. President Putin did a snarky AP interview, via NYMag:
… Putin said he felt sorry that President Barack Obama canceled a one-on-one meeting in Moscow that was supposed to have happened before the summit. But he expressed hope the two would have serious discussions about Syria and other issues in St. Petersburg.
“President Obama hasn’t been elected by the American people in order to be pleasant to Russia. And your humble servant hasn’t been elected by the people of Russia to be pleasant to someone either,” he said of their relationship….
What else is on today’s agenda?

I’ve been up since 4 in the ayem, baking challahs for dinner tonight. I can post a picture when they’re done if anyone’s interested. L’shana tova!
I guess Putin doesn’t understand that the civilized world is not happy with Russia’s anti-gay laws. He’ll figure it out soon.
I made productive use of my day making a tumblr for my department. A little part of my soul died in the process.
It’s got basically no content right now but here, have a foetal archaeology tumblr.
@TheMightyTrowel: Great start! I’ll post pics as soon as I can. Right now, I’m cursing the first cool, dry weather we’ve had in weeks–slowest rise ever! I kick-started it in the oven with the pilot light for a minute or two, so I’m hoping to start shaping the special round “bird” loaves soon (maybe by 7?). It’s usually braided, but for Rosh Hashanah, my family always makes round ones–one with raisins and one plain. I’m gonna be late for work. Oh well.
@Patricia Kayden: He is Putin, he doesn’t care about the others.
@TheMightyTrowel: I like it! I like making websites, though. Sorry your soul got pinched.
@Manyakitty: Now I’m hungry. Oatmeal just doesn’t sound that appealing this morning.
At the hospital with my wife, who is having surgery today. Hungry, but won’t eat until she actually goes in.
@JPL: Thread needs moar breakfast.
@JPL: hah! I had reheated gnocchi with walnuts. Yay leftovers!
There should be a good “In Mother Russia” joke in there somewhere
@MrSnrub: Hoping for a good outcome for both of you!
@MrSnrub: Best wishes and a speedy recovery to MrsSnrub!
Maybe looking at this while shoveling down oatmeal will help take the edge off?

And just when you thought the cold war was over…
This is true. But he does represent the kind of “managed democracy” that a significant percentage of people in this country wish we were because, you know, regular democracy is just so messy and stuff.
Three young ladies in Cleveland, who lives were forever changed, lived in captivity for ten years. Castro couldn’t take a month in captivity. What a coward.
@MrSnrub: Hope MrsSnrub’s surgery goes well.
Spent some time yesterday (and boy, am I feeling it now) digging up this crap, some of which was 3 or 4 feet in diameter at the base.
Think have now gotten all the infestations out from the sloping ground (which has scorpions hiding in the ground cover). Still have lots to dig up and remove down to and including the roots on level areas, but that should be somewhat less taxing.
After that, the mounds right next up against trees or PVC water lines, where digging is not the best plan. Going to use an industrial size Sawzall on those and paint what’s left above ground with undiluted Round-up.
@Manyakitty: oh bugger. I meant to start mine yesterday and do an o ernight second shaped rise in the fridge.
Heh. Lots of Russians that agree with that part of your statement.
@cvstoner: Absolutely. Listen to how rapturously they go on about China and Singapore.
@Aimai: I almost did that. Should’ve. At least they’re done now. Anyone want to give me a clue about how to post a picture? I have one on Facebook, but that seems insufficient.
@JPL: Yep. In this case, the coward demonstrated the most sincere form of self-criticism. I’m glad my tax dollars don’t have to support warehousing him for another 30-40 years. Just goes to show what a weak, spineless piece of garbage he was.
Sensibly? Um, no. I think the Chinese do it sensibly: they start the new year in spring.
Anyway, L’Shana Tovah!
