Have at it.
Actually watching Habs/Bruins and flipping back when a pick is going to be made.
It was beautiful here today- house is 84 degrees inside and we are dealing with a major, major shedding issue.
*** Update ***
This is a major fail on the part of ESPN. CBS is announcing the picks online two mins before the ESPN feed.
I can’t explain how bad this is for ESPN. Millions of people are free to watch hockey or other things while streaming CBS. And they don’t have to listen Mel Kiper. According to twitter, this is due to an agreement between ESPN and the NFL.
Hill Dweller
Kiper and Gruden are already screaming at each other.
Morzer
@Hill Dweller:
Give them battle-axes and lock them naked in a room. Problem solved.

Have you considered using the Furminator on Shawn?
Keith P
Good call on the Texans taking Clowney. Him and JJ Watt will be SCARY. I initially wanted them to trade to get a bunch of picks, but this draft is too deep to try it (plus the QBs this year are only so-so). I’m in favor of them trading for Ryan Mallett and draft some good offensive linemen.
Violet
Clowney has a great smile. Makes me smile when he smiles. I’m certain that has nothing to do with the NFL draft but that’s about all I’ve got to contribute.
Comrade Mary
Habs/Bruins: did not Ginette Reno fucking DELIVER? They have not yet lost with her singing the anthem.
Also, awesome picture.
Also also: there has been some fucking fervent fan singing of O Canada in Montreal lately.
Betty Cracker
I wish the Bucs had a shot at Clowney. He’s a gottdamn monster.
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
I miss having a dog around the house, but I really really don’t miss vacuuming up the hair all the time.
The Dangerman
@Keith P:
I couldn’t believe Gruden was pushing Manziel as #1; he’s almost guaranteed to get some General Manager fired. His game will not play in the NFL (see III, RG).
RareSanity
@Keith P:
Good thing too…because with no QB, they’re gonna be on the field together a lot this season.
Arm The Homeless
I am loathe to imagine how the Phins are going to screw up their pick. Death, taxes, and bad Dolphins draft picks, these are the constants in this life.
Comrade Mary
@efgoldman: To quote my sweet, gentle, late mother: Mange la marde.
Morzer
@Arm The Homeless:
Dolphins have drafted well in the first round of late. Why so negative?
Keith P
@efgoldman: He’s got a great arm (he was an early Heisman candidate in Cam Newton’s big season), he’s big, he’s been playing under Tom Brady, he should be cheap with a bit more NFL seasoning than a rookie would (I tend to think the throw-the-rookie-in-to-start craze will slow down in a year or two)
Plus I’m of the belief that the secret to great QBs is that they get time to throw. I think someone of Mallett’s caliber can excel with a good OL…at least as good as Schaub when he was getting protection.
RobertDSC-Power Mac G5 Dual
I’m following @NFL_DRAFT on Twitter for each pick instead of following the usual sports sites.
Morzer
Well, Bortles goes to the Jaguars. That’s a brave pick, but I think it’s a good one for them.
Keith P
So the Jags are able to get rid of Blaine Gabbert, and the next draft they pick…Blake Bortles??!??!
Morzer
@Keith P:
I think Bortles is probably the best longterm bet for a successful QB in this draft.
Morzer
Now, if the Bills had a real QB, the pick of Sammy Watkins might be worth the price they’ve just paid.
Comrade Mary
@efgoldman: Yeah, and next you’ll be telling me that Juno winner Leonard Cohen can’t sing. Come on, this is a woman who’s been beloved in Québec for decades.
Anyway, she’s under doctor’s orders to sing. You’re not going to go against her doctor, are you?
Morzer
@efgoldman:
Matt Flynn would like to know why he gets no love from you.
Violet
Wow, that is bad. I clicked over to the CBS site and you’re absolutely right. The CBS site has the pick way before it’s announced on stage. I figured the NFL would have the whole draft announcement thing locked down tight. Seems really stupid.
Speaking of the draft people on ESPN, who’s the guy with the weird hair who keeps saying everyone should draft Manziel? He must have money on him going by a certain number or something.

I just had to blockquote this whole thing via Joe My God:

But I have to agree with you on Rene. Especially since I got to hear Roger Doucet.

Shouldn’t she have shaved before the game? But having her hair slicked back and wearing a Habs joisey was some sort of (nice?) touch, and she did look happy.

Hoping for a good wide receiver for the Niners in Round 1 but it’ll probably be a cornerback.

I have to say, I like how the Browns have handled themselves so far. They are really controlling this draft nicely.
Violet
The ESPN coverage is terrible but I do like watching the players. They really are nervous and excited. With all the attention on them and all the money on the line it’s easy to forget they’re still really young. It must be pretty exciting to be drafted early into the NFL. A lot of them are really emotional.

@David Koch:
You are really invested in the fall of House Manziel, aren’t you?
Violet
@David Koch: The ESPN people will not shut up about Johnny Manziel. They’re apparently shocked he hasn’t been picked yet. Must suck to be touted as a number one draft pick and be down to number nine and still not be picked. Will he make Top Ten?
Keith P
@Culture of Truth: The Texans defense should be pretty damn sick this year as long as Clowney’s head stays right. Of course, I thought Detroit would be unstoppable once they got Fairley and Suh.
Comrade Mary
@SFAW: Well, I’m all Canuck but only half Québecoise and some other weird fractions all together. And I won’t correct what you wrote to “phoque you” because that’s a little old right now.

Hmm so the Lions have decided that an offense consisting of Megatron and occasional accurate throws from Stafford might not be quite enough.
David Koch
@Violet: Darling, you really got to tune over to the NFL channel. No hype, good interviews,

Well that’s it.
The next 14 teams all have a starting quarterback.
Giants, Rams, Bears, Steelers, Cowboys, Ravens, Jets, Dolphins, Cardinals, Packers, Eagles, Chiefs, Bengals, Chargers.
Then comes…. wait for it… Cleveland.
After Cleveland, the first round finishes with 6 teams that all have a starting quarterback (Saints, Panthers, Pats, 49ers, Broncos, Seahawks).
So if Cleveland doesn’t select him, he falls out of the first round. Unless one of those teams want to pay alot of money to someone to ride the bench for years.

Wide Receiver a good pick for the Giants? I hope so.

So it’s up to Cleveland.
They to a QB 2 years ago in the first round (Brandon Weeden) and teams are reluctant to give up on first round picks, especially when they’re quarterbacks, because they hate to admit a high profile error.
But if they do choose another first round QB and if they’re sober, they should go with Derek Carr.

@J.W. Hamner:
Would be nice. A couple of years ago there were complaints by viewers that the TV channels (ESPN and NFLN) were telegraphing the picks by showing the prospects getting the phone call from the team before the pick was in. The networks agreed to hold off on those shots until the pick itself is announced onstage. But none of the other news organizations are bound by that decision and so they are able to display the pick online as soon as they are comfortable they know it is “confirmed”.
Violet
@MattR: Why does the team call the player anyway? Just tell the NFL commissioner and let them announce it. Apparently the whole point of the Draft Day festival is to make the announcements a Big Deal. What would be better for ratings than to have the entire thing be a surprise? Having players be truly surprised when they hear their name called would be much more fun.
different-church-lady
@Violet: They have to make sure he didn’t coke OD the night before.

Keith P
Hmmm…Bridgewater’s still available and the Texans are on deck. I didn’t think we’d land him, but I bet we do.
MattR
@Violet: Not entirely sure. I think it is a combination of it being a remnant of the days when the draft was not so popular and that phone call was actually how the players found out AND it is a last sanity check to make sure there won’t be some kind of issue with the player going to that team (which I also imagine may be a remnant from decades ago)
trollhattan
@trollhattan: Trade to Viks
Keith P
@Keith P: Orrrr, the Vikings slip in for the steal! In that case, I’m guessing the Texans take Garropolo.
Violet
@MattR: With all the checking out of the players and the multiple communications back and forth you’d think the teams would know all they need to know. I don’t get the whole big show thing in Radio City Music Hall. It could all be done at a distance.
Howard Beale IV
@LookingForACanadian: They had more pressing needs in the secondary than in the backfield.
MattR
@Violet: Sure. It could be done at a distance, but there is money to be made by having a televised spectacle.
David Koch
@Violet: It gets huge ratings and it’s a money maker.
Violet
@MattR: But less money to be made if people don’t watch because why bother when online sites have the info sooner. That was kind off my point. To increase the ratings they need to crack down on picks getting out before they’re announced on stage.
This draft thing takes forever. Do they keep going for the next rounds? Or does the big Radio City Music Hall thing end and everyone else finds out at home?
David Koch
@Violet: they hold the draft over a 3 day period. tonight it’s only round 1. Tomorrow it’s round 2 and 3. And on Saturday it’s rounds 4-7.
It goes by faster on Friday and saturday because they shorten the alotted times to 7 minutes per pick for round 2 and 3 and 5 minutes for the rest.
Keith P
@Violet: The real draft takes forever, but you’d be amazed at how much time/effort even go into fantasy football drafts. I know people who drive across the state to meet up with in a central city for a draft, and they’ll last for HOURS. It’s like a sports analog to D&D.
Violet
@David Koch: Thanks. I didn’t know how it worked. I think I’ve only ever seen any of the draft once before. Maybe it was on at the gym or something. Must have been later in the rounds because the players were at home. They had cameras in the homes and showed them getting up off their sofas and hugging their families and talking on their phones.
different-church-lady
NFL draft 2018. The first pick, and only the first pick, is a 2 hour long pay-per-view special in Sunday night prime time. Each pick of the first round is then held over the next 29 nights, with every 5th pick available only on the NFL network.
After that each round is held on a single day every other week. The final pick of the draft happens in week 3 of the season.
MattR
@Violet: I really don’t think it matters too much to those who watch the draft. If they are hardcore, they will be browsing online as well to get the pick as quickly as possible. If they don’t want to know ahead of time and want the drama of seeing the pick revealed on TV, they will just stay offline. IMO the bigger threat was when they were showing the phone calls on TV before the picks were officially announced. That was going to drive people away from watching.
@Violet: Usually, only the top 6-8 or so prospects are at the draft in NYC while the rest watch at home with their familiies. The first round is more than 3 hours with a 10 minute pick limit (and it used to be 15 minutes) so nobody wants to be the last person sitting in the green room for hours waiting for their name to be called (especially if they really expected to be one of the top 7-10 picks)
Violet
@MattR:
That’s what happened to Manziel tonight, isn’t it? His face got more and more drawn as the draft went on. #SadManziel is kind of entertaining.

@Violet: Yeah. But he kinda expected that he could just as easily slide down the first round as be taken in the first 5 picks. I have a feeling the NFL really pressured him to be at the draft because he was the biggest name in the draft. And I am not sure his ego could stay out of the limelight even though he knew it could end up being a long night.

@Culture of Truth:
since people always talk about who new guys is compared to old guy
johnny could be a doug flutie
(who got screwed by the NFL for most of his Canadian career for being short.)
for him the questions are 1) can he be coached and 2) can he take repeated NFL hits
Cleveland took him, for him, his best bet was being an understudy and learning to be coached.
and I’ll take making some cash for being a minor celeb over a lot of other misconduct.

This is tooooo funny:

@Morzer: I saw Bortles lead Cent Florida to the win over UL (at UL). Our only loss of season. They were down 28 – 7 & he led them back (along with their 2 great running backs).
I was very impressed with him.

@Ash: I wonder if it’s supposed to be pronounced like Nelson Muntz says it?

@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: We passed over Adrian Peterson to draft an O-Lineman.
That’s the story of Cleveland drafts right there.

@gian: I would like to see someone compare him to Fran Tarkenton.
