Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Republicans in disarray!

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

We will not go back.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Sunday Night Open Thread: Just As Well, If True

This post is in: Open Threads, Clown Shoes

From the Annals of Improbable Research file, in the Washington Post, “Americans aren’t getting married, and researchers think porn is part of the problem“:

… A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, determined that the rise of free Internet pornography is not only correlated with a pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might actually be contributing to the trend…

Broadly, higher Internet usage was associated with lower marriage rates. But pornography use in particular was more closely linked to those participants who were not married than any other form of Internet use, including regular use of financial websites, news websites, sports websites, and several others. The opposite, for comparison, was true for religious website use, which was positively correlated with marriage…

Apart from offering everybody involved a wet wipe, what’s on the agenda as we wrap up the evening?

“Those Who Will Not Learn From History… “

In 1992, more than 4,000 off-duty NYPD cops stormed City Hall, blocked Brklyn Bridge, beat up reporters. No arrests. http://t.co/MFKrPmqDta

— Mister Bunny (@AskMisterBunny) December 21, 2014

From the NYTimes archives:

September 17, 1992 — Thousands of off-duty police officers thronged around City Hall yesterday, swarming through police barricades to rally on the steps of the hall and blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge for nearly an hour in the most unruly and angry police demonstration in recent memory.

The 300 uniformed officers who were supposed to control the crowd did little or nothing to stop the protesters from jumping barricades, tramping on automobiles, mobbing the steps of City Hall or taking over the bridge. In some cases, the on-duty officers encouraged the protesters.

While the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association had called the rally to protest Mayor David N. Dinkins’s proposal to create an independent civilian agency that would look into police misconduct, the huge turnout — estimated by the Police Department at 10,000 protesters — and the harsh emotional pitch reflected widespread anger among rank-and-file officers toward the Mayor for his handling of riots against the police in Washington Heights last July, his refusal to give them semiautomatic weapons and his appointment of an outside panel to investigate corruption…

Mayor Dinkins, who was not at City Hall during the demonstration, denounced the protest as “bordering on hooliganism” and said he held the P.B.A. president, Phil Caruso, responsible for what happened. He accused Mr. Caruso of inciting his members’ passions and suggested the union leader was motivated in part by contract negotiations.

The Mayor also assailed Rudolph W. Giuliani, the probable Republican mayoral candidate, who spoke out against the Mayor at the union rally. Mr. Dinkins said Mr. Giuliani had egged on the protest irresponsibly for political reasons. “He’s clearly, clearly an opportunist,” Mr. Dinkins said. “He’s seizing upon a fragile circumstance in our city for his own political gain.” …

Hey, from Guiliani’s perspective, the riot worked.

@billmon1 @AskMisterBunny The force was much whiter then. I'd be surprised if they could pull a similar stunt today.

A Thought Experiment

For one second, imagine the head of a teacher’s union blamed a school shooting on George Bush. In hours, how long would the union continue to exist? How long would that person have a job? How long would it be before the person’s entire family had been doxxed and Malkin or the Orange Avenger Johnson was outside their house?

The gas station I use has special “membership” pricing on Sunday, so my company this morning while filling my tank was a bunch of guys driving 10 MPG pickups. I’m sure all of those camo-wearing Limbaugh listeners were silently thanking Barack Hussein Obama for the cheap gas they were putting in the 40 gallon tanks of their shiny, gas-guzzling penis extensions.

Not really, because gas prices only matter when they’re high and there’s a Democrat in office. Otherwise, they’re political dark matter.

.

It’s lookback season in the media. Bryan Curtis, at Grantland, asks “Michael Sam got drafted, we all witnessed something special, and then … what happened?“:

… Remember your smile, because what came after wasn’t nearly as fun. A lot less fun, in some cases. A rearguard of bigots and the enablers of the NFL’s no-“distractions” policy had their own sultry kiss in front of the world. Players and reporters tried to say the right things, to give no offense — which is better than the alternative, but can have a certain narcotizing effect on journalism. Also, Sam got cut — twice. It’s either a credit or demerit to our society that two men kissing on television was the most uncomplicated part of Sam’s first season in the NFL…

Sam hoped that after the initial tsunami, interest in his story would subside. “I thought people would be just, ‘Okay, he came out,’” he told GQ this month, when the publication named him one of its Men of the Year. “And that would be that.” Sam said he wanted to be a “football player,” full stop. Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers could have told him that this wish was naive at best. Rogers said he gave so many interviews and attended so many events after signing with the Galaxy in 2013 that he wore himself down and eventually got injured. I asked Rogers what question he heard the most from writers. “Very standard,” Rogers said. “‘So you’re gay and you play soccer?’…

In the spring, a funny thing happened to Sam. His announcement, this moment of joy, became a line item on his CV. It had less to do with Sam being gay than the NFL’s wish to smother all “distractions” — distractions being a conflation of anything from human sexuality to business interests to crime. “The fact Michael Sam is gay is like another player abusing his wife or something,” said Chris Kluwe.

Obama to possibly invite Raul Castro for WH visit –who’s next? Assad, Kim Jong-un, Leader of Boko Haram, Leader of Hamas? #AppeaserInChief

— Mario Diaz-Balart (@MarioDB) December 18, 2014

I’ve been enjoying the sweet taste of the tears of the South Florida congressional delegation, Mario Diaz-Balart being a prime example. This Dan Drezner piece goes through the reasons why recognizing Cuba is a big nothing, but for people like the Diaz-Balarts and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, it’s everything. The big, bad bogeyman who they’ve dedicated their lives to hating and fearing is now out from under the bed, and it just ain’t that scary. They know as well as we do that the net impact for the average schmuck living in the United States is going to be a few different cigars in the shops and another warm vacation destination in the Winter. But for them, the days of privileged victimhood are over. Being a Cuban is now like being every other kind of Latino, and Baby Jesus knows that ain’t pretty, especially if you’re a Republican.
