Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Dixie Fix Sticks The One Six Mix

This post is in: Election 2016, Republican Stupidity, Clown Shoes

Oh please let this happen.  Take it away, Team WIN THE MORNING:

Officials in five Southern states — Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas — are coordinating to hold their primary on March 1, 2016. Texas and Florida are considering also holding a primary the same day but may wait until later in the month. Either way, March 1 would be a Southern Super Tuesday, voting en masse on the heels of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

The joint primary, which appears increasingly likely to happen, would present a crucial early test for Republican White House hopefuls among the party’s most conservative voters. It could, in theory, boost a conservative alternative to a Republican who has emerged as the establishment favorite from the four states that kick off the nominating process. But one risk is that the deep-red complexion of the Southern states’ primary electorates would empower a candidate who can’t win in general election battlegrounds like Ohio and Colorado.

Republicans from the South say their states make up the heart of the GOP and that it’s only fitting the region should have commensurate say over whom the party puts forward to compete for the White House. Proponents are already dubbing March 1 the “SEC primary,” after the NCAA’s powerhouse Southeastern Conference.

Yes, please let Texas and Florida and the Deep South pick the GOP ’16 candidate by St. Patrick’s Day, for maximum gaffe exposure to the country.  I’m all for this.  Let the people see exactly what they are getting from putting the SEC states in charge of the Republican primary process, do it early, and let them sweat it out for eight months under the klieg lights before they crack.

This is a great plan.

It’s time for a tradition started by Jon Swift/Al Weisel, the “Best Posts of the Year, Chosen by the Bloggers Themselves.” Jon/Al left behind some wonderful satire, but was also a nice guy and a strong supporter of small blogs. (Here’s Jon/Al’s 2007 and 2008 editions and the revivals from 2010,2011, 2012 and 2013.)

In the comments, please give your choice for best post of the year for your own blog and/or give your choice for the best post of the year on Balloon Juice.

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.  Probably involves a goat and some chewed wires or something. Hell it’s Vox, they may end up correcting the post later, they tend to do that a lot lately.

Put Up or Shut Up

This post is in: Assholes, Our Failed Media Experiment, Our Failed Political Establishment

Since the right wing and members of the media have decided to blame everyone but the god damned shooter for the murder of two policemen in NYC, a phrase keeps popping up over and over and over again- “anti-police rhetoric.” Here is a prime example:

We have seen nothing but police bashing from some of the highest offices in the land.

Michael Brown and Eric Garner died resisting arrest. Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu died doing their job. It is a very important distinction. Michael Brown and Eric Garner were committing crimes. Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were protecting all the citizens of New York City.

The national dialogue on proper and effective policing has been totally distorted. Activists purporting to represent the majority of the black community have been bolstered by a 24 hour news cycle that gives them unwarranted credibility. I do not believe for one minute that Al Sharpton represents the feelings of most hardworking, law abiding black American families. I know through dozens of community meetings during my time as NYC Police Commissioner that what the black community wants most is what we all want—a safe environment in which to live their lives.

***

When Ismaaiyl Abdulah Brinsley brutally executed Officers Ramos and Liu he did so in an atmosphere of permissiveness and anti-police rhetoric unlike any that I have seen in 45 years in law enforcement. The rhetoric this time is not from the usual suspects, but from the Mayor of New York City, the Attorney General of the United States, and even the President. It emboldens criminals and sends a message that every encounter a black person has with a police officer is one to be feared. Nothing could be further from the truth. We will never know what was in the mind of Brinsley when he shot officers Ramos and Liu. However we do know that he has seen nothing but police bashing from some of the highest officials in the land.

No one, however, provides any examples of this so-called anti-police rhetoric. It’s just there, like phlogiston or the Supreme Court’s definition of pornography or the Lord Jeebus’s undying love for you. You can’t pin it down, you can’t point to a concrete example of it- well, except for the doctored Fox news video of Al Sharpton. It’s just an article of faith. It’s there, and you just have to believe to see it.

Putting aside the fact that “anti-police rhetoric” is a phrase that has rocketed into prominence faster than anything I can remember since the Dick Cheney “gravitas” chorus of 2000, I would like to see some of this so-called anti-police rhetoric. So put up or shut up. Show me some anti-police rhetoric from Obama, Holder, etc. I’d love to see exactly what is off limits, because this sure as fuck isn’t:

The suspects in Sunday’s shooting spree in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of two police officers and a shopper were a young married couple who espoused extreme pro-gun and anti-government views on their Facebook pages and who had spent time at the ranch of Cliven Bundy, whose standoff with the federal government made him a cause celebre in the so-called “patriot” movement.

***

A few days later, Miller shared a photo that proclaimed, “The police have never attacked a pro gun rally.”

On her YouTube page, Amanda Miller liked videos called, “Shooting Cops,” “Citizens Can Shoot Police,” and “When Is It Okay To Shoot a Cop.” She posted a video of Jerad Miller interviewing people at the Bundy ranch. Her Facebook page contains photos of a woman posing with guns and she shared a picture of the “best coffee table ever”—it was a table with a drawer full of guns.

So let’s see what this “anti-police rhetoric” really looks like. Links, please. Don’t just sit on the edge of the bed and tease me. Let me have it.

No Time For Torture Trials

by Zandar|  December 22, 20148:54 am| 44 Comments

This post is in: An Unexamined Scandal, Fables Of The Reconstruction, Security Theatre, Sociopaths

The NY Times calls for the investigation of Team Cheney Torture Awesome Force GO! which should be major news.  It’s not, and in fact the depressing part is that it’s close to meaningless.

The question everyone will want answered, of course, is: Who should be held accountable? That will depend on what an investigation finds, and as hard as it is to imagine Mr. Obama having the political courage to order a new investigation, it is harder to imagine a criminal probe of the actions of a former president.

But any credible investigation should include former Vice President Dick Cheney; Mr. Cheney’s chief of staff, David Addington; the former C.I.A. director George Tenet; and John Yoo and Jay Bybee, the Office of Legal Counsel lawyers who drafted what became known as the torture memos. There are many more names that could be considered, including Jose Rodriguez Jr., the C.I.A. official who ordered the destruction of the videotapes; the psychologists who devised the torture regimen; and the C.I.A. employees who carried out that regimen.

That’s great and all, but as I said last week:

So yeah, solid majorities in favor of “enhanced interrogation techniques” because “they work”, and “got us intelligence we could not have otherwise gotten”, and that the Senate Democrats should never have released the damn report at all.

Also, 47% found the report unfair to the CIA, and 57% think there should be no charges against those responsible (only 1 in 3 want to see prosecution.)  Hell, even 46% of self-identified liberals and 46% of registered Democrats believe the CIA actions were justified.

Not going to happen.  Obama doesn’t want to go after who did it, Holder doesn’t want to investigate those behind it, the CIA certainly won’t stand for it, the GOP will never allow it, and most of all, the American public could not care less about prosecuting torture.  Hell, we think it’s great because you never know when you’re going to have to take a Black & Decker to the temple of some dirty foreign brown guy to save American lives from a digital countdown clock, just like the teevee machine shows us over and over again.

We don’t want to know, and we don’t care to know, and we never will.  All Team Cheney has to say is “If your family was facing a terrorist bomb, and you had the guy who could stop the clock tied to a chair, how far would you go to save your loved ones?” Every time we look into his world of darkness we’ve seen only ourselves.

So eventually we’ll stop looking altogether.

Saying good bye to the single payer dream

by David Anderson|  December 22, 20147:52 am| 43 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome

Any public health financing program has a couple of major moving parts that must be resolved in order for the program to work.

a) Who gets covered and how is eligibility determined?

b) Who provides the services and how/how much are they paid.

c)  How does the money for A and B get raised?

The Veterans Administration determines that vets with service related injuries are covered for all relevant medical services by providers employed by the VA at VA owned facilities and the funds are raised by general taxation.

CHIP covers kids whose families make under certain thresholds to receive subsidies, or any kid at full price.  Services are provided by the private sector and they are paid at near commercial rates.  Funds are raised through cigarette taxes and general taxation.

Medicare covers people over 65 or the long term disabled. Services are rendered by private providers on a fee for service basis (usually) at rates that are based on roughly the average cost of services.  There are three funding streams.  The first is FICA taxation.  The second is Part A and B premiums paid by recipients of Medicare, and the third is a series of deductibles and co-pays for services.

PPACA Exchanges have services rendered by privately employed providers on a variety of fee structures ranging from roughly Medicare to roughly commercial.  People are eligible for subsidies if they make more than 100% but less than 400% of FPL, and anyone can buy an off-exchange policy.  The services are paid for by a reduction in Medicare Advantage payments, increased income taxes, user premiums, and c0st-sharing.

So how does the  Vermont single payer program answer these questions?

Because I am not a nice person, it amuses me that the NYTimes is primly reporting “G.O.P. Hopes for Unity May Be Upset by Ben Carson“:

… With former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida moving closer to declaring his candidacy, and the Republican establishment determined not to repeat the mistakes of the lengthy nominating fight of 2012, the rise of Mr. Carson suggests the best-laid plans of the party for 2016 may not go as smoothly as desired.

Even as Mr. Bush began to quietly line up donors, and the attention of the news media turned last week to policy disputes over Cuba between two other potential high-profile contenders, Senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, Mr. Carson was riding an under-the-radar groundswell.

In Iowa, which holds the first voting for nominees, a local chairman or chairwoman has been recruited in all 99 counties, something no other potential candidate can claim. A national committee to draft Mr. Carson into the race, Run Ben Run, has raised more money than the high-profile outfit urging voters to get “Ready for Hillary.”

Though few Republican strategists expect Mr. Carson, 63, to be the nominee, they acknowledge his potential to throw a wrench into the establishment’s desire to unify early, and the danger of turning off moderates if his divisive views continue to gain traction.

Mr. Carson has built a profile on heavy exposure as a commentator on Fox News, an uplifting biography and, especially, intemperate criticism of the Age of Obama that might seem to disqualify a major-party candidate…

His unfiltered remarks are embraced by parts of the Republican base in inverse proportion to the fits of outrage they inspire on the left. “To the base who are looking for someone completely different to shake things up, that probably makes them more of a fan,” said Craig Robinson, a former political director of the Iowa Republican Party.

In Iowa, which has a history of rewarding nontraditional candidates, strategists regard Mr. Carson as more formidable than outsiders in the 2012 race like the pizza executive Herman Cain and former Senator Rick Santorum, who won the 2012 caucus.

An October poll of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa by The Des Moines Register and Bloomberg Politics put Mr. Carson in second place, with 11 percent, behind Mitt Romney.

A Fox News survey released last week of Republican voters nationally put Mr. Carson in the middle of a crowded field behind Mr. Romney and Mr. Bush…

Back in 2011, I gleefully fantasized about Herman Cain doing well enough among the GOP “protest voters” to force Mitt Romney to offer him the VP slot, because watching America’s Whitest Vulture Capitalist share a stage with the 9-9-9 Pizza King was so rich in comic potential. A Jeb Bush/Ben Carson ticket doesn’t have anywhere near the same comedic promise, but it would still be entertaining to watch the genuinely self-made pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Carson respond to comparisons against a man whose entire career has been based on being born to the right parents…
