Move over, Girl Scouts, cause the Radical Brownies are where it’s at. The group, which was started last month in Oakland, CA, by Anayvette Martinez and Marilyn Hollinquest, are all about social justice and self-love:
They are young women of color between the ages of 8-12 years old. They are not affiliated with Girl Scouts of America, and have their own badge system including one for “Radical Beauty” and an “LGBT ally” badge, reports Fusion. … In the Radical Brownies, girls learn about social justice movements such the Black Panthers and the Chicano group, Brown Berets (to whom they wear their own brown berets in homage), reports Fusion.
The group hopes to start chapters all over the country and we really hope it takes off.
Team Blackness discussed another step in the government eradicating homelessness, a drone crashing onto White House grounds, and a women who went out for coffee and came back to her husband bulldozing her home, and

Can someone notify Jon Chait about this on his twitter-thingydo?
They should form a Microaggression Squad.

So where do the Campfire Girls come out on the scale between the awesome Girl Scouts and the bigoted Boy Scouts?

social justice seems like a better focus than camping
social justice to some extent is supposed to be part of Scouting but when my sister was in GS I just remember a lot of drama between the kids and the parents and flogging cookies door to door

It’ll be interesting to see if it takes off. The Girl Scouts have been good about being socially liberal, unlike the Boy Scouts. There have been a few challenges to the boy scouts that have never been able to gain traction.

I’m also wondering if “of color” is descriptive or prescriptive because there are radical whites out there and to the extent they’re siloed in very white-only spaces it really hurts social movements. There’s a lack of social connections, lack of dialogue, completely different perception of problems/needs, and finally, failure to form alliances on mutually beneficial issues.
Most white parents would rather stay in a majority white community but some white parents see the value in immersing their child in a diverse environment. I grew up in a neighborhood as part of a ethnic/religious minority and it changed my life, and one of my best friends is a dedicated and accomplished labor activist who went to a majority Black high school and it changed his life. Bet it’s no shocker that in Florida they were teaching different history in the Black high school vs the white high schools….

The rightwing nuts already hate the Brownies and Girl Scouts for being radical lesbian transgender godless commies. What are they going to make of this new group? Their heads would explode, except that they already have many times.

For the first time in my life I have a desire to be a parent. My daughter would be the founding member of the Nikolai Bukharin battalion.

@Another Holocene Human:
From the article:
Paul in KY
@The Pale Scot: I would like my daughter to be in the Lev Zinoviev Battalion!
Visceral
@The Pale Scot: @Paul in KY: Nikolai Bukharin and Lev Zinoviev are both dead white males. This organization logically would want to find women of color to name their chapters after.
@Another Holocene Human:
“Of color” is always prescriptive in practice.
@Cervantes:
But even if you let white girls join, they’re going to have to accept that the organization is not really “about” them … but that’s implicitly a good thing, since now they will have the opportunity to be exposed to alternatives, and if they or their parents want a “white” organization – because ‘white’ is as much a worldview and value system as it is a skin color – they can just join the Girl Scouts.
