Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The willow is too close to the house.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

He really is that stupid.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Bark louder, little dog.

This really is a full service blog.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Tuesday Evening Open Thread: Beware the “Helpful” Tweet

Condoleezza Rice is the GOP’s white whale. http://t.co/zj80tKyk18 pic.twitter.com/gxZgfvECHd

— Chris Cillizza (@TheFix) February 24, 2015

The Washington Post article, by Nia-Malika Henderson, is perfectly reasonable:

The ‘Draft Condoleezza Rice for [fill in the blank office]’ movement will never ever die. And with an open Senate seat in California in 2016, the unquenchable desire among Republicans for candidate Rice has an actual office that she could run for in sight…

Based on this (name recognition) poll, which shows Rice leading current California Attorney General and declared Senate candidate Kamala Harris in terms of peoples’ “inclination” to vote, the Conservative Action Fund launched yet another attempt to get Rice to run. The Black Conservative Fund has also joined the efforts…

Obviously, lots of these groups that have nothing to do with actual candidates are really only in business for themselves. And Rice, who remains a rarity as one of the most high-profile black Republicans in the country, will always be good for business–even though her every move suggests that she would rather spend time on the links and in the classroom rather than glad-handing for votes. A pile of signatures and web site won’t convince her otherwise.

And yet, from the responses to Cillizza, I think there’s a lot more people reading his tweet than will bother reading her words. Speaking of microagressions.
***********
Apart from a round of “I can deal with my enemies, Goddess protect me from my allies”, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

To be fair, this form of grifting is really one of the only things that both sides do indeed. To wit: the myriad petitions to “draft Warren” in my email…

There is no way in hell Rice can win a Senate seat in California. Though I doubt she would even remotely consider running anyway.

    @humanoid.panda:

“Draft Warren” may be part of a strategy to persuade the powers-that-be not to ignore liberal issues. “Draft Rice” is hard to explain except as grift, unless Rice is, in fact, persuadable.

Hal got it. She can’t win here. Absolutely not possible. Yeah, she has some “name recognition”, but you know, so does Hitler.

I am very concerned that we don’t have a stronger candidate that Kamala Harris, but it will probably work out fine unless that jackass Newsom decides to jump into the fray. He could really fuck up what should be a sure thing.

There’s heavy competition at the WaPo, but Cillizza is very much in the running for ‘most useless’ commentator. Has he ever had even a flicker of interest in policy? I don’t read him that much and I don’t keep score, but I’d start with the assumption, based on past performance, is that the answer is ‘no, no, no, no, no.’

Harris was elected DA when I was living in SF. One thing I like about Harris is that she does not believe in the death penalty and ran as DA in California with that position. A police office was killed on duty and Harris declined to seek the death penalty as promised, even though the police association and Feinstein as well as other were all up in arms and tried to get her to change her position. She’s tough and I have no doubt she can run an effective campaign.

He doesn’t have any history in Florida to get our crazies fired up. He doesn’t have the Eastern seaboard newspapers in the bag. Tribalist thinking goes to a bad place fast, as it clear from the way the lines have been drawn. Yeah, my ox got gored too, but even if it hadn’t I still think (as a fellow white person) she should have been circumspect enough not to call people of color out, off the cuff, if you will. It doesn’t take much thought on my part to pick apart why her statement is just factually wrong, but let’s say it’s the heat of the moment, you don’t say shit that alienates the people you want on your side in the heat of the moment. If you dislike or resent somebody, they should never know it. I mean come on, people.

From everything I remember seeing and hearing about Rice, I have no reason to believe should would have the slightest interest in representing a US state in the Senate. As I remember from her testimony during hearings from Bush II, she saw herself as some sort of vague font of wisdom about history and grand strategy. Kind of hard to pin down exactly what she thought she was responsible for in her job.

People like Biden or HRC, or locally, Willie Brown can get into the broken street lights and unfilled potholes, or whatever corresponding nitty-gritty issues are at state level, with interest and zest. Any indication from anything in Rice’s career she has any interest in that?

As I said when this topic came up before, probably be unpleasant experience for Rice to be responsible to CA constituents for getting anything done.

All the front-pagers including John Cole have very carefully avoided posting anything about this blockbuster story:

The disappeared: Chicago police detain Americans at abuse-laden ‘black site,’ The Guardian, 24 february 2015.

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.

The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights.

Alleged police practices at Homan Square, according to those familiar with the facility who spoke out to the Guardian after its investigation into Chicago police abuse, include:

Keeping arrestees out of official booking databases.

Beating by police, resulting in head wounds.

    Shackling for prolonged periods.

Denying attorneys access to the “secure” facility.

Holding people without legal counsel for between 12 and 24 hours, including people as young as 15.

At least one man was found unresponsive in a Homan Square “interview room” and later pronounced dead.

I have been warning about this kind of thing for more than 10 years now on this site, and everyone has just laughed and laughed and laughed at me. Now, here we are.

I can only speculate on the reason for the blackout by Cole and the front-pagers on this news. This kind of overtly totalitarian stuff would reflect very poorly on our glorious Democratic overlords, including the sainted Rahm Emanuel, now Chicago’s mayor, the Obama’s former chief of staff.

Read my back posts in which I relentlessly warned that if the American people didn’t start rising up with mass protests and general strikes that shut own the whole country, we were going to wind up very soon in a situation where ordinary Americans on the street get “disappeared” to secret prisons and held, tortured or executed without being arrested, without a trial, and without getting charged with a crime.

I was called deluded and mentally ill and a troll.

    Now it’s happening.

I keep thinking about this TV interview I saw Condoleezza Rice do right after Obama was elected in ’08. She was talking graciously about the historic nature of the election of a black President, and she looked happy, relaxed and smiling, completely unlike any body language or facial expression I’d seen her use on television before.

She’s no particular fan of Obama; she campaigned for Romney in 2012.

I think she was mostly just happy to be getting out of there. I don’t see her going back into government and definitely not into politics.
