I’m “celebrating” by starting Operation Pack Everything. The movers come in ~2.5 weeks. I have a lot of books. Sigh.
The really “fun” part is that the sequence goes: Move self out of apartment into temp housing. Then coordinate the move of an estimated 2-3 semitrailers worth of Work Stuff. Then move self into temp housing at the other end. Then locate permanent housing and move self yet again. It’s going to be an interesting summer and fall.
This is one of the best weeks of the year for me. I’m thinking I might try spending the week in Canada next year at least for part of it. Should be fun!

There’s a super-sweet looking old german shepherd at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter in West Virginia: “We picked this old man up yesterday, 6/30/15 from the Summit Point area. He is neutered and micro chipped but so far we have come to a dead end of tracing the chip. He obviously has some serious issues with his skin and has been addressed with our vet and he has a thyroid issue and a secondary skin infection, NOT Mange. He is getting his first medicated bath today. He has a long recovery time ahead of him to address his skin and overall poor body condition. If anyone recognizes this dog please contact us at 304-728-3289. Otherwise, after his 5 day hold we will be looking for a rescue to take him and continue his treatments and rehabilitation. Please share.”
He has the saddest look on his face in the photo, but he really looks like a little TLC will work wonders. I’d be happy to help pay for his care if anyone can help with this old gentleman.
Good luck with all the moving. Hope your back holds out!

@TaMara (BHF): My plan (or aspiration, really) is to do ~3-4 boxes a day for the next two weeks, plus triaging stuff as I go, and then sprint the last half week or so to get whatever is left done. Today’s job is bringing a few boxes of work-related books into work (to be included with the main move).
Moving myself is annoying but straightforward. It’s the lab move which keeps me up at night. All sorts of delicate and expensive equipment which has to be carefully dismantled and packed, and then reassembled and realigned and checked for leaks and so forth at the other end.

Welp, spending all day till 5 cashiering… in a gift shop in a touristy little Florida town that’s expecting several tens of thousands of people to come through.

P.S. I couldn’t figure out how to link to the photo of the old german shepherd, but he’s got standard GSD markings, is clearly pure GSD, and is very skinny – he’s been on his own for a while rather than newly lost. He’ll be very handsome once he puts some weight back on and gets some gloss back in his coat.

Here’s the kids looking down on the steps that are no more. I’m going out and sweeping the water off of the floor of the addition. It’s 3/4 inch tongue and groove subfloor and I’m hoping that the rain won’t hurt it but, since they won’t start back until Tuesday and it is supposed to keep raining I’m going to keep sweeping.
Although there have been numerous fatal alligator attacks in Florida, the Orange County attack may be the first of its kind in Texas.
That’s because people from Orange County know the damn alligators will bite you on the ass. This fool was lately from somewhere else and just happened to get killed in TX. It would’ve been a rattlesnake if he had taken a job in AZ, or bear attack in AK, this was going to happen sometime.
The article doesn’t say but he obviously had had a few.
On this July 4, let us not forget the efforts of the scribes who put the effort into inscribing the directions to the treasure on the back of the Declaration of Independence in invisible ink, using several levels of holographic imagery.

Three years ago I had to put my big dog Teddi to sleep due to her inability to rise or walk. She was thirteen years old and my guardian and best friend. I cannot even write about her now without tearing up. I was lucky enough, however, to find another good and loyal friend who has helped to heal the hurt. He is sweet, smart and a natural comedian. This is Duncan in his favorite spot on the couch next to me while I read, crochet, watch tv, etc.

Maybe it’s a thing of mine because I was single during the “reply with a short letter” newspaper personals. Placing and getting responses to one’s the ads was free nand anonymous, and there were enough non-creeps in the male userbase that normal women hadn’t fled the scene. Nah, they’re good. I’m still getting to know the place, so there are plenty of times when I can’t answer their questions and they COULD be frustrated assholes if they chose to. Generally, they don’t choose to.
(Most common tourist languages besides English: Spanish and German, and more rarely French and Russian. Don’t ask me why).
@trollhattan: Beautiful girl. We adopted a young Dalmatian when I was 8. Her family was leaving for overseas. Pure dalmatian, but her spots all touched, she was beautiful. She was an awesome, sweet dog.
We lived in an integrated military community and one of my best friends was African American. He was sitting and petting her in our living room, and he said to my mom, as he was looking at Molly’s beautiful spots, “this is how the world should be, all blended together.” It was 1970 and I’ve held that memory close to my heart ever since.
@TaMara (BHF): They caught the beast outside, brought it in. No tuna for them.
Side question: do dead rats go into the Green waste for composting by city, or straight to the black bin for landfill?
91.

@MobiusKlein:
Not green waste, as meat & guts don’t turn into mulch. Regular garbage. Also, too, there’s always a chance they’ve eaten poison bait, which is why I’m adamant about getting caught rats away from my dog (something quite displeasing to dog, dog owner and the rat).
