Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

In my day, never was longer.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

This blog will pay for itself.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Stand up, dammit!

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

“They all knew.”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

T R E 4 5 O N

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

One Small Step For Transgender People, One Equal Step For Peoplekind

A new rule, proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services would ban discrimination against transgender folks when it comes to health insurance. This would be part of a broader rule on how to carry out the Affordable Care Act’s ban on sex discrimination:

Once final, the proposed regulation is likely to expand insurance coverage for gender transition, the Associated Press reports. It won’t require insurers to cover transition surgery, but it will make it harder to deny transgender people care related to their transition. Insurers already pay for things like hormone treatments and reconstructive surgery, but may deny coverage for those services if they are needed for a gender transition.

Just imagine, we could one day live in a world where LGBTQ people can get married without interference from the Kim Davises of the world, not be discriminated at his or her job because there are Workplace Discrimination laws, AND get health insurance. It’s like they would have the rights that all Americans should have!

Team Blackness also discussed a new billionaire candidate in the presidency race, no justice for yet another mentally ill black person who died suspiciously in prison, and all you could possibly want to know about Margaret Sanger.

So a Christian employee of a health insurance provider will be FORCED to issue a policy to a transgender person and THEN approve treatment related to their transition, even if their faith disapproves? And just like that, the iron bootheel of Obama drives down a little harder on the necks of the faithful believers of the once-great nation of the U.S. of A. where freedom of religion used to mean something.

Someone ought to resurrect Increase Mather and let him loose on these tin-pot Savonarolas.

That’s crazy talk. We all know that only Real Americans® deserve rights. Everyone else gets only what we let them have.

Rod Dreher at The American Conservative is having another screaming meltdown that transgendered people are violating his notions of nominalist order and therefore destroying the Western metaphysical teleology handed down from on high to Greek philosophers back in the fucking Bronze Age.

You can’t make this shit up. Dreher needs competent counseling.

    @celticdragonchick:

Are those the same Greek philosophers who coined the word “Hermaphrodite” to try and explain what they were seeing in the real world, or a different set of Greek philosophers?

(Yes, I know intersex and transgender aren’t the same thing, but it takes a special kind of stupid to claim the Greeks were ignorant of the possibility when they coined the word we used for a few centuries.)

Might be worth adding a thread on the NYPD assault on Blake, now that the video has been released (see TPM). It’s outrageous. And bear in mind, the cop thought he was arresting a suspect in identity theft — not exactly a violent crime or an imminent threat to public safety. Surely, that encounter could have begun (and should have) with a polite request to see some I.D.

And they’re definitely the same Greeks who had military units composed entirely of homosexual couples and were familiar with Scythian women warriors who provided the basis for stories of Amazons- both things that cause modern conservatives to flip out.

@retr2327: Last night I heard the Police Commissioner say it was an “alleged something something” and I thought what reason would Mr. Blake have to concoct a story. A bunch of NYC cops roughed him up, standing outside a midtown hotel. The mind only sort of boggles.

    @retr2327:
    UPDATE:

The team of officers, looking for suspects in a credit card fraud ring, were relying on a courier who identified Mr. Blake as one of the buyers, the police said. The officers also had an Instagram photo of someone believed to be involved. That person, who Mr. Bratton said looked like Mr. Blake’s “twin brother,” turned out to have no role in the scheme.

Oh we aren’t ever going to have the full gaumont of rights. I can’t pee in half the states and in 31 I can be evicted for existing. Not to mention that just putting my erotic pictures on line I violate a bunch of community standards laws.
