Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans in disarray!

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

The words do not have to be perfect.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

After roe, women are no longer free.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

This really is a full service blog.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

    @Gin & Tonic:

    This is historic. As old as I am, I’ve never seen a Democratic President actively campaigning for his successor.

    Let’s see: Gore famously and stupidly kept Bill Clinton at arms’ length
    Johnson was pretty unpopular in ’68, not to mention that the nomination was a mess
    Truman in ’52 was only slightly more popular than Bush was in ’08, so while I don’t know for sure I doubt Stevenson wanted his help. That’s it for “incumbent not running for re-election” among the Democrats. Going back pre-WWII, Wilson was a 2-term D but was about as functional as Reagan by the end of it, and then we have to go back into the 19th century.

    Just for giggles, the GOP: 2008, Bush was radioactive. I think Reagan did a bit of pro-forma campaigning for GHWB in 1988. Ike hated Nixon and did basically nothing in 1960. No idea whether Coolidge campaigned for Hoover in 1928.

    Basically, “reasonably popular President campaigning hard for his successor” is pretty damn unusual.

    When was the last time one ended well?**

    **Yes, I think Gore should have tied himself to Bill in 2000, but it was not like there was not an argument against doing that.

    @Gin & Tonic: No President has actively campaigned for his successor, to any great degree, in living memory. The only ones for whom it would have made sense were Eisenhower/Nixon, Reagan/Bush and Clinton/Gore. Ike hated Nixon, Reagan was too physically infirm by that point to do very much, and Gore didn’t want Clinton around.

    I keep seeing a friend of a friend posts on Facebook where this person keeps asking some variation of “Why should I vote for Hillary? Give me one good reason.” Then she gets multiple good reasons, and just keeps talking about how either Bernie will do the same, or better, or just dismisses the points people make outright. I see some variation like this all over social media, but it seems so concentrated in people in solid blue states (I’m side eyeing you, Susan Sarandon) who can throw their vote away on a write in, or just not vote, knowing full well Hillary is not going to lose CA/NY/etc to Trump.

    At the end of the day, don’t vote for Clinton, but I’m finding it frustratingly disingenuous when people decide they can’t find a single decent delineation between the two candidates. Hell, not Scalia on the SC proved to be the next best thing to having an Obama pick on the SC. That alone is worth the chance to me.

    @Adam L Silverman: i’ve been saying the same thing to conservative friends for the past 7 or so years. Funny thing, my late uncle, a man who is among the those I most respect, immediately saw the talent and promise in Obama. Then again, he survived 25 missions over Japan and worked in the early space program, so maybe he didn’t suffer from the bedwetting insecurity that seems to affect a lot of white males from the generations that followed him. That insecurity is going to be the death of us, but maybe we’ll luck out better than England, where it threatens to turn a proud country into a nasty little rump state thanks to buffoons like Johnson and Farage, who can’t even take responsibility for their “victory.” Thank God we had Obama to step up when it mattered here. Kudos to HRC, too, for not backing down. This appearance is a nice coda for the end of that ridiculous email non-scandal.

    @Adam L Silverman:

    Factoid: I was privy to a conversation with the parents of some friends from Kansas. Somehow the conversation got onto the President. I was fine at biting my tongue until I heard: “He just doesn’t understand what folks like us are going through.”

    At which point the Imp of the Perverse ran on its silent paws up and down my esophagus and I said, “you know his grandparents are from Kansas, right?”

    Stare. “His grandparents are from *Kenya*!”

    “Yeah, well…his *other* grandparents are from Kansas!”

    At which point I yielded to the kicks my friend was administering me under the table and subsided. I forget what else we talked about.

    I know that the Master of this house has a deep aversion to threaded comments but now that comments are regularly going into the gazillions -or at least a few hundred- it is becoming almost impossible to connect replies to comments and engage in actual discussion, especially on iPad, etc. where scrolling is squirrelly. Just a thought.

    @Quinerly:

    That is an extraordinary, and extraordinarily courageous, letter.

    I was born a few years before the liberation of the death camps (young enough that I have no actual memory of the event, but the point is it happened within my lifetime); I have participated in any number of Holocaust remembrance events over the years — and I am still shocked and grieved when I see the kind of vile racist sewage directed at Dana Schwartz.

    There are people here who will think or tell me that I shouldn’t be shocked, it’s nothing new, the anti-Semites are just more open now and can hide behind Twitter and Internet anonymity. Well, I know it’s not new by a few thousand years, but I refuse to surrender my ability to be shocked. I do not ever want to take racist speech and behavior for granted. It is horrifying and deserves to be greeted with a horrified reaction, followed, of course, by words and actions that counter the hatefulness.

    I think (from something in the letter) that it’s Ms Dana Schwartz, not Mr, but you are right, absolutely devastating. I would hope the fact that she made it a public, open letter might help preserve her employment — there would be incredible blowback if she were fired for this or on some flimsy pretext. It will be most interesting to see whether and how Kushner responds. I hope Quinerly or someone will monitor and let us know.

    I live in the rural hillsides of West Virginia, along with many fascinating people. We had our milk cow serviced at a farm nearby, and stopped at D’s house to chat before I went to round up Molly. Which was also interesting, but not on topic.

    I learned a lot that hot summer afternoon. He was an infantry soldier in Europe, and was part of a unit that first liberated a death camp. I wish I remembered which one. His first person descriptions of the horror that those country youngsters uncovered that day… it was something I will never forget, even if details fade.

    They couldn’t really do anything to save people, they were soldiers, not medical folks. They didn’t have anything to feed people that far along.
