Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Consistently wrong since 2002

On The Road

On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.

So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…

Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!

Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice

Some wonderful pictures to start the weekend! I booted JRinWV until Monday’s set as I think that OzarkHillbilly’s recent submission will complement. It will be worth the wait, I promise!

First up, from otmar:

Where it was taken: Linz / Vienna
When: April 24th-27th 2017
Other notes or info about the picture: This is daily stuff for me (iow, I passed by these sights on various errands), but maybe interesting for other BJ readers.
I spent two days in Linz this week, here are pictures of the Cathedral and the church just next to it.

Then a few shot from Vienna:
* The Staatsoper, the state opera house.
* St. Stephens Cathedral
* The ferris wheel in the Prater.

Well yes, I seem to have messed up the picture order but it’s late and my eyes are tired, so please forgive me.

otmar – do send more, we love them! And next time I’ll ensure I do it earlier so I’m not exhausted.

Next up, from RLchina:

Xihu Park Hangzhou China
Monday May 1, 2017
Rlchina AKA dà máng guǒ   大芒果

Wow…and that last one, just…wow. I am speechless.

Two more from RL:

Streets of Shanghai
April 30 2017
Rlchina AKA dà máng guǒ   大芒果

Thought that John Cole needs these shirts….

Hmm…perhaps there’s a new market for Balloon-Juice sayings, categories, quotations, etc. We can export TO China!

And so finally, just a pair of pictures of mine from a few years back. These were taken at the summit of Pike’s Peak, from whence the poem America the Beautiful was composed/inspired. No matter the grim news of yesterday, today, or tomorrow, we have high ideals, deep values. beauty and love.

Xihu in Hangzhou is extremely beautiful in the smog.. locals tell me that they have blue skies 40-50% of the time and then it is heaven on earth….

@Quinerly: I’ve been thinking of you and your work at your family home, mother’s house. I did it; it’s no small thing. Take care. Beach, ocean and Poco sound like good strong forces for balance.

otmar and RLchina — These photos are the moving views I needed this morning. Incredible to connect to this beauty through you. Thanks much.

Alain, big thanks for your vision, this feature.

@Aleta: being in China I cannot resist anywhere near as much as I could back home…I hope in some small way I can help lighten the spirits of those who can do more than I can….

There was a tshirt I saw years ago that I wanted. It was black (because it has to be black) which white letters that weren’t big or bold and weren’t capitalized (I think it more effective than big and shouty) that said go away

    I want it

    @Aleta:
Thanks for your kind words. Bad storms here this AM. Tornado warnings and a very angry Atlantic. Poco and I are hunkered down (he is terrified of storms). Hopefully the WIFI doesn’t go out. This is the day I set up the new stereo here and some other toys. Back to the house I am packing up on Monday. I’m very lucky that I can take breaks from it and come here. Have a great day.

@Quinerly: My dog (like Poco, he’s large, living a new life now, and always up for adventures followed by rest) actually tiptoes during storms and fireworks.

@Quinerly: I have cruised through the posts, though at a much later hour. Sorry, weather related migraine. I’ve got your email address and I’ll get in touch when I figure things out. Then I will see how they work for you. I hope Poco has recovered from the storms. Things have cleared up here. My last dog, Martha, needed Valium to get through bad storms.
