My sister has some foster pups and they are pretty adorable:
I don’t know what the hell is going on in that last picture.
I’m exhausted. This year has been so damned draining.

I’m a total cat positive/dogs not so much person but I would absolutely welcome those 2 doggies from the last p
hoto into my home!

Awwwwwwwwwww! They are just adorable. That middle picture with the headgear and the little bird on it. What in the world is that? Where did she get the photos done? Did she take them herself. They’re amazing.
Yep. And as bad as this year has been it does not begin to compare with the awfulness of 2016 for me. The horror that was 2016 is almost impossible to describe.
Omnes Omnibus
Dog One ain’t takin’ no shit from no fuckers and is simultaneously cute as fuck. Talented pup.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: Bowie and Prince dying and then Trump? Jebus.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Dog One looks like he’d tear up the house. Shoes would not stand a chance.
Mnemosyne
So your sister is the kind of person who puts clothes on her dogs, is she?
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: Events outside my personal sphere were bad, as you noted. What happened in my personal sphere was a horror show that seemed like it would never end. Outside events did not help.
Yarrow
That last photo just slays me. Reminds me of some kind of Renaissance painting of a burgher and his wife. Except they’re dogs. And they’re sitting in front of an electrical outlet with something plugged in, so obviously not Renaissance.
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: I did not mean to denigrate your personal experience. Sorry.

I started following the Oregon Zoo on Facebook just so my 2018 will be filled with Lincoln, their new sea otter pup. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium but deemed unreleasable by Fish & Wildlife, so he was sent to a new home in Oregon.
Yarrow
@Omnes Omnibus: You did not. No worries.
planetpundit
Rest yourself and enjoy some Yuletide peace and quiet, John. Happy Holidays to all.
Yarrow
@Mnemosyne: Cute. That sounds pleasant and distracting.

@Major Major Major Major: Are you going to London as in the UK? Or some other London? (Saw you mention it in another thread)

@Mnemosyne: My girls are currently wearing sweaters, today was a spa day and they’re cold.

Word on the Twitter is that MSNBC has fired Joan Walsh, after 12 years. Joy Reid confirmed it. No reason given.
But at least they still have Hugh Hewitt.

If I’m going to put a little booze into eggnog, what should it be: whiskey or rum? I may have some brandy somewhere, too.

@Mnemosyne: Liquor dot com says rum, brandy or bourbon, if that helps.
Major Major Major Major
@Yarrow: thanks, got any pointers?

@Major Major Major Major: damn, I’m jealous. I’ve never been to Portugal, and I find it really appealing. A friend of mine was there not long ago and said everywhere you want to go is somehow uphill from wherever you are
Omnes Omnibus
@Yarrow: @Mnemosyne: I am from WI, so I say brandy.
Aleta
@Mnemosyne: If you have it, bourbon + whiskey, then some rum if you can. Fold in some whipped cream, add vanilla ice cream if you like.
Raise a few chickens, gather the fresh laid eggs in a basketeta That was my mother’s recipe she said she brought from Louisville.

@Yarrow:
Unicorn horn, me thinks.

If Omnes shows up in this thread, I finally heard about a use for his bottle of vanilla brandy. My aunt uses a hand mixer to blend cheap brandy and ice cream into a punch that she serves at parties. You could probably also mix it together and put it back into the freezer for boozy milkshakes because it would not re-freeze.

Now I’m thinking that it’s past 10 pm and I would have to get up off the couch to find all of the ingredients. I’m just too lazy to be much of a drinker.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: Um. Hello?
NotMax
@Mnemosyne
Bourbon, brandy or dark rum will work.

We wus trying to adopt a German Shepherd. We thought we’d got him but somebody else won out. We are sad. The dog is probably happy because he has a new home. But we are still very very sad.
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
See? I knew it would work.
I’ve never actually had this punch of my aunt’s, but her friends were asking about it on Facebook. I guess I don’t get invited to the parties where she serves it.

@Just the Facts: she’s not my favorite, but… too bad, considering some of the people they’re keeping on. At the end of O’Donnell’s show, they announced that the next hour of BriWi would feature Parson Meecham and The Dolphin Lady on the past year. Hard pass. I wonder what Hewitt’s audience is like for that weekend show that runs against, I imagine, the farm report and Rev. Ernest Ainsley’s Hour of Grift.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: Punches need balance.

@Major Major Major Major: Really enjoyed touring Shakespeare’s Globe theater the last time I was there. Also the Tower Bridge. I’d been on the London Eye during the day but that time went at night right before it closed. Very cool experience. No one else was there, it was dark and raining. Got some very cool photos.
No suggestions for Portugal but some friends went and said salt cod was on all the menus. They tried it and were underwhelmed.

@Mnemosyne: Late night here is weird.
I know it’s not late night in California, but in Ohio his it’s late and it’s weird.

The classic Regent’s Punch is a recipe that was supposedly the favorite of the Prince Regent, later George IV. Cognac, two kinds of rum, and champagne along with oranges and green tea.
The Jane Austen Centre removed all of the alcohol except for the champagne, which is why I’m not linking their recipe even though they also provide a facsimile of the original recipe.

I have had a cough since the night before Thanksgiving. Did a whole course of antibiotics and am now halfway through steroids. No relief. I cannot remember what it is like to sleep at night.
Mnemosyne
@zhena gogolia:
Ugh. I’m sure that any advice I have is something you’ve already tried, so I’ll just say I’m sorry. I hope the doctor is able to find some relief for you soon.
zhena gogolia
@Mnemosyne:
Thanks. I’m usually someone who goes to sleep right away and wakes up 7 hours later, so this being up all night is not working for me.
NotMax
@zhena gogolia
There’s a thing going around. Started the coughy thing Nov. 11; as of today much, much, much improved but still not completely gone. General consensus is 6 – 8 weeks before it becomes a memory.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Huh, Dave Weigel has protected his tweets. Kinda weird.
zhena gogolia
@NotMax:
Oh, God. That’s terrible! But at least it’s somewhat comforting to hear it’s “a thing.” My doctor acts as if he’s totally puzzled by it, which kind of scares me.
zhena gogolia
Okay, I guess I’ll go back to bed and lie there reciting Lermontov to myself. That used to work. Doesn’t any more.
Mike J
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Not protected when I looked at it, but nothing but retweets with no commentary. Which is weirder than being protected.
Yarrow
@zhena gogolia: That’s very frustrating. Sorry you can’t seem to get well.
Last year I was very sick and had an awful cough. My doctor prescribed something he called pearls along with a liquid cough medicine. Prescription, not over the counter. One was an expectorant and one a suppressant.
I went to see him and had stopped taking the liquid because it made me so woozy I was tripping over things and I was afraid I’d fall and hit my head. He said I could replace the liquid prescription medication with an over the counter one but I HAD to keep taking them. He said every time I coughed it irritated my lungs and actually made the cough last longer. I needed to suppress the cough so the lungs could heal. I’d never had it explained that way to me. I followed his instructions and got the cough under control.
I don’t know if that might apply in your case but thought I’d toss it out in case it’s helpful.
Sister Golden Bear
@Major Major Major Major: Nice! I was in Portugal for a week last year.

Emma
@NotMax: wonderful. I have only had it for two and a half weeks!
My father came home from rehab today. He has some pain– I am not making light of it — but I hope this gets better as it goes, or I am going to need enforced rest in a mental institution. Between my cough and his constant needs I may finally fall asleep on Boxing Day.

Sweaterdogs! I want the little white one in the sweater.
@NotMax: Thanks for the link to the smoking bishop recipe. Tara has a really good blog; bookmarked it.
The bishop might help get me through gluhwein withdrawal once I’m back to the US. A lot of the Christmas markets end today, or even yesterday. Christmas Eve is the big deal in Germany. (Berlin’s Christmas market runs until January 31st. Not going there, but in event any Juicers are in the area and think they have missed the markets … maybe not.)
Amir Khalid
@Elizabelle:
Any festive Weihnachtsmarkt pix? Do share if you have them.
Elizabelle
@Amir Khalid: Yes, I was thinking about that. Lots of beautiful ones, of the lights and festivities. I will share. Alain mentioned he was busy sorting through previous submissions, so I will try to put together some and email them to Betty or Anne or Adam. Have wanted to share them. It’s gorgeous here.
Today the Wiesbaden and Mainz markets close. Going to visit both of them, and eat dinner at a restaurant in a 16th century monastery (I think that’s the date). Tomorrow: fly to Spain.
Wiesbaden is the most beautiful market — the petal-like lights above. Mainz had the best merchandise (IMHO). They’ve all been worthwhile, though.

@zhena gogolia: I am a big proponent of second opinions — could you get in to see a pulmanologist?
Ohio Dad had a nightmare that woke both of us up. Now that the adrenaline surge is abating, I need to try to get back asleep. See you all later.

@Ohio Mom: I’m glad you mentioned adrenaline surges. I need to leArn more because that’s what get all the time.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
I just came here to ask whether anyone knew what is up with that.
I read Weigel’s twitter thread pretty often. But I am not enrolled on twitter, so I cannot be a “follower”.
And I do not intend to join twitter, either.
But I am worried about what this might mean. Let’s hope it means nothing much, and nothing bad.

Any of yinz who are suffering from a viral URI, be vigilant for a period of improvement followed by what looks like a relapse, & hie thee to an MD. Frequently an opportunistic bacterial infection will sneak in behind the viruses that are vacating the premises & make you miserable again, The good news is that a timely course of antibiotics will knock it out.
(This used to happen to me every winter, to the point where I begged my PCP to at least note this in my record so that course of antibiotics could be started in timely fashion, She refused on the grounds that “antibiotics are overprescribed.” Easy for her to enable needless weeks of suffering so long as it wasn’t her doing the suffering, I guess. She moved out of the area & is no longer my PCP but I doubt her replacement at the clinic will be any more amenable,)

Fun aren’t they?

@Uncle Cosmo:
I have a generic migraine med that is only somewhat helpful in mitigating them. There is a patented med that helps but the VA doesn’t normally carry it, I was told they did then found a generic so booted the original. But more importantly there is another med that is hugely successful but it is an opioid analgesic so they are deathly afraid of overuse and won’t prescribe. Fun times.
