On behalf of the Obama family, Merry Christmas! We wish you joy and peace this holiday season. pic.twitter.com/CNFUZrhrBj

We gorged ourselves at our favorite Chinese restaurant, and still came home with enough leftovers for the rest of the week. Beef with mushrooms, Singapore rice stick, and Yang Chow fried rice all reheat nicely — don’t think we didn’t plan in advance…

It seems like the reverend of the church Trump attended tonight may possibly have been preaching to him specifically. Pool report: pic.twitter.com/EJFFrj75Ha
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) December 25, 2017
At least for Christmas Trump could work some seasonal themes into his tweets, like how the FAKE NEWS was out to get Jesus too. Or how Christ wouldn't release his taxes either.

Episcopalian shade! Good for Rev. Harlan. Hundreds of people on my Twitter timeline are pointing out how many more likes President Obama’s greeting has gotten than Twitler’s has.
Amir Khalid
Der Scheißgibbon’s not one for self-examination. If Reverend Harlan was indeed preaching directly to him, the reverend probably reckoned that the effort would be futile but still worth making.

I thought Trump was a “Presbyterian, can you believe it”.

Need suggestions.
Landlady wants a new (or used) car and wants me to do legwork on it. She is fixated on another Subaru Forester (totaled her ’05 recently – no one hurt, no other vehicles nor other property involved).
Frankly, she’s 90 and I think that’s too much car for her, especially with the narrow parking spaces at many lots here. Any suggestions on makes/models appreciated (doesn’t have to be Subaru) – she does prefer something that sits up higher than an average sedan. Her budget is more than modest but not luxury range generous.
Amir Khalid
@Butthurt Jordan Trombone (fka XTPD):
It was insensitive of Don Lemon to air that idiotic speculation, which was very hurtful to the families of the lost passengers and crew (many of them Malaysian). Asking whether Donald Trump has ended the nonexistent war on Christmas is just as idiotic, but it isn’t hurtful to anyone.
Villago Delenda Est
@Butthurt Jordan Trombone (fka XTPD): Yes, that is pretty stupid. CNN has fallen so far, and learned nothing in the process.
Amir Khalid
@NotMax:
At 90, should your landlady be driving at all?
Suzanne
@NotMax: I am on my second Honda CR-V, and I love it. I loved the previous one, too. I like sitting up higher, too, but don’t really like driving big cars. (And I think full-size SUVs are big cars.)

We just watched another episode of “The Crown”, where they reveal just what a douche Edward VIII was, with his Nazi sympathies. What we didn’t know before was his role in letting Hitler grab the Rhineland without a comment.

@NotMax: Used Mini Cooper 4door AWD. Get’s about 35 miles to the gallon. Hideously overpriced if bought new. So she won’t have to worry about the depreciation. They’re almost impossible to roll them over or flip them in case of an accident. They’ve got a lot more space inside then you’d expect.

BBC reports that Robert Urich’s widow Heather Menzies, who played one of the Von Trapp children in ihe movie musical The Sound of Music, has died of brain cancer at 68.

That Christmas picture of the Obama’s is awesome.
AS for Trump, he likely would have seen vindication in that Mandela quote if Trump was paying attention at all. After all Trump sees himself as saving Christmas for some evil sekrat deep State Muslim plot.
NotMax
@Amir Khalid
Locally (market, post office, drug store) she’s okay.
Her incident happened on the highway, in torrential rain, coming back from a rare trip into town. Not high speed, airbag did not deploy.
@Suzanne
My very preliminary thoughts are Honda HR-V (smaller cousin to the CR-V) or Kia Soul. Possibly Ford C-Max (which, as the model has been discontinued as of last month, ought to be marked down).

We won the war on Christmas!
“Merry Christmas” is no longer forbidden by Obama’s deep state.
“Merry Christmas” is now mandatory in Trumplandia.

@NotMax:
Toyota RAV, Jeep Patriot, Honda CRV, small Ford SUV, etc. Get her into a decent one for 10-15k. Factory certified is always a good idea.
sigyn
@NotMax:@NotMax: How about a little pick-up?
Small for parking, maneuverable as all get out; she’s not kidding about the difference that extra height makes. Plus the interiors of pick-up trucks have gotten as plush as most cars.
Bonus:
If she learned to drive more than 50 years ago then she can drive a stick; which will help keep her focused on the road.

@Adam L Silverman:
Says Mini, but it’s a Bimmer. We own a BMW 550i, when the warranty was up I found an independent BMW mechanic, good guy who charges about half of what the dealer’s shop charges. Haven’t had any real problems with it, I stay on top of the maintenance. It’s a wonderful car and it’s been paid for for awhile. I’ve always judged a car if it makes me smile when i start it up, the BMW does that. I’ve owned 59 cars over the years and the 550i makes my top ten and it’s had some tough competition.

@sigyn
Good thought but not remotely in the cards with her.
Redshift
@NotMax: The current Forester is a lot bigger than the ’05, so it wouldn’t necessarily be a good replacement.

@Redshift
Prezactly.
Basically her (unspoken) want is something the old biddies at church won’t turn up their noses at when she drives in.
Jager
@NotMax:
In that case get her 7-10 year old Benz C Class. 4 cylinder, they look pretty much like the new ones and they are bullet proof, Safe, reliable.

Convincing her to hold off until she finds out what the insurance company will pay took two full days, and she’s still wavering at that. Once we have that figure (plus whatever more reasonable without breaking the budget) I can start combing through craigslist, for starters.

@Adam L Silverman: Again Trump views a piss filled boot as a drinking vessel.

Suppose I ought to add that the reason we don’t have the number from the insurance company yet is because the holiday intervened.

I don’t think Reverend Harlan was preaching to Trump. It’s just that almost any call to basic human dignity or righteousness is going to come out as a rebuke to Trump.

So does Trump wish Jared and Ivanka a merry Christmas? And why didn’t they attend mass with the family? It’s almost like they are anti-Christian and don’t recognize Jesus as the savior of humanity.

@Honus: And where’s the kid? It’s like he entered the White House and was swallowed up whole. He wasn’t at church with his parents, and he wasn’t in the WH “Christmas card”.

@NotMax: We have a 2012 Forester and we love it. I don’t know how tall she is but we are both pretty short @ 5’3″ and visibility was a BIG problem for us with most of the SUVs we test-drove. There are a couple of brands we’d love to buy but we were essntially blind on the right side and right side rear, even with mirrors. The blind spot for me depends on the width and positioning of the right hand door frame and whether you can see out of the side rear windows, and there’s a spot where a small car can fit alongside and be invisible unless you can see out through the windows. The mirrors just won’t catch them.
We loved the Honda CR-V we tested, very luxurious, nice upholstery, but that rear camera stopped us cold. It’s one more thing to go wrong and while I love gadgets, I’d bet it’s expensive to fix; also we realized we could not see out the sides and rear side windows nearly well enough. Like I said, we’re short. She may not have the same issues that we both have.
opiejeanne
@Wag: I was hoping for one more season from Capaldi, but maybe this will be good. I liked him, I adored David Tennant, it took me a while to appreciate Matt Smith, and this will be something new.
I haven’t watched this episode yet but I’m pretty sure my tv machine recorded it. .
NotMax
@opiejeanne
Rear view camera rigs (camera plus display – good ones, too) have become very inexpensive.
Bought one for Mom’s car when was visiting last September and installed it in less than an afternoon.
Nelle
@opiejeanne: We rented a Hyundai and I found the side mirrors, with the extra small mirror in the corners, totally eliminated the blind spot problem. I’m surprised those aren’t on every car by now. I’m wondering if I can find them for our cars.
satby
@Nelle: I love my Hyundai, and those mirrors really do eliminate blind spots. Merging into traffic is so much easier with them.

I tried a forester in 2016 & found it too big. Of course I was moving on from a Miata, so everything seemed huge. I settled on a crosstrek which I really like. Get all the safety features. I got them anticipating issues as I get older.
