Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We still have time to mess this up!

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Consistently wrong since 2002

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

He really is that stupid.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Senators escalated a bitter dispute over Brett M. Kavanaugh’s documents — signaling a contentious confirmation fight ahead for the Supreme Court nominee even as senators on Tuesday successfully installed another appellate judge under President Trump.

Infuriated with Republicans for requesting only a portion of Kavanaugh’s records from his tenure in the George W. Bush White House, Democratic senators sent a wide-ranging request to the National Archives demanding that his entire paper trail be provided to Congress.

The letter, sent Tuesday, asks for all of Kavanaugh’s records from his time as an associate White House counsel under Bush, as well as his years as staff secretary. Kavanaugh, who was nominated to replace retiring Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, served for two years in the counsel’s office and three years as staff secretary — a high-ranking position that controls the flow of documents in and out of the Oval Office.

Trump’s remarks at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall came one week after his administration announced that it is preparing a $12 billion emergency aid package for farmers who have been caught in his escalating trade war with China and other countries.

“China and others have targeted our farmers,” he said. “Not good. Not nice. And you know what our farmers are saying? ‘It’s okay. We can take it.’ ”

Trump argued that previous administrations had allowed the United States to “truly get ripped off, but we’re not going to let that happen.”

“I’m not like other politicians,” he said. “You’ve seen what happens. I’ve kept my promises.”

There were 4 armed suspects who shot up the outside of a house in the adjoining community and fled to our neighborhood. @Jay: The problem isn’t a big trade deficit per se. We’ve had trade deficits this big before. The problem is big trade deficits with a weak, slow growing economy (edit: and the Dub and Obama recoveries were weak compared to all previous post-WWII recoveries), which results in high deficits over business cycle, low private saving, and the consequent extreme difficulty of ever getting out of a trade deficit into surplus (that last should be obvious).

And the Trump macroeconomy is just the Obama macroeconomy on autopilot, since they haven’t done anything. Except shove a bunch of tax money down the throats of rich people and corporations and start a dumb trade war. We’ll see how that turns out.

@Platonailedit: Yep, I read Murray Waas’s article earlier this evening.
    nybooks.com/daily/2018/07/31/what-trump-knew-and-when-he-knew-it/

Previously undisclosed evidence in the possession of Special Counsel Robert Mueller—including highly confidential White House records and testimony by some of President Trump’s own top aides—provides some of the strongest evidence to date implicating the president of the United States in an obstruction of justice. Several people who have reviewed a portion of this evidence say that, based on what they know, they believe it is now all but inevitable that the special counsel will complete a confidential report presenting evidence that President Trump violated the law. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees the special counsel’s work, would then decide on turning over that report to Congress for the House of Representatives to consider whether to instigate impeachment proceedings.

    Much more at the link.

Chuck Rosenberg is extremely experienced, well informed and congenitally cautious. For him to say this is noteworthy.

    @MaddowBlog
Chuck Rosenberg: “There are enough pieces in the public record already for someone to be charged with a conspiracy to coordinate or receive assistance from a hostile power.”

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: MSNBC has built a deep bench of what are largely very good national security and Federal legal experts to cover this stuff. And it is important to remember that a lot of these folks are personally politically conservative. Or they were until the President got elected.

@Damon: thanks. I’ll order it. It was a good day today. I saw an Elizabeth Warren bumpersticker today and no Trumpov bumperstickers in Phoenix. I also happened to go to Payson, a rural heavily Mormon town northeast of Phoenix and they had a Democratic headquarters there. I haven’t been to Payson for a couple of years but I don’t remember ever seeing a Democratic HQ there. It was right on the main thoroughfare in a better location than the GOP location festooned with flags and signs including one to register to vote. Maybe a few votes here could make a Dem governor and Senator possible for AZ.

I assume anyone with FBI on their CV is probably conservative if not right wing. I would just want Rosenberg to keep me out of jail.

@Mai Naem mobile: nobody on that network is quicker to cut off Rs who tiptoe into excuse-making for trump. And tonight she followed the Maddow policy of not show any clips of The Beast, which I appreciate

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: The reason I pointed that out, is like DNI Clapper and DCI Hayden, as well as a whole bunch of other now retired senior intelligence and military leaders are all speaking out. Almost all of them are politically conservative and when they’ve voted have tended to vote Republican. This is an important indicator of just what is actually going on given that 1) these men and women normally don’t speak out like this and 2) are doing so despite their own personal political views and party affiliation.
