Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Cole is on a roll !

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Everybody saw this coming.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

The words do not have to be perfect.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

People are complicated. Love is not.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Let’s finish the job.

According to Lin Manuel Miranda, we all get “the best seat in the house!”

I must admit to having a crush on LMM – with his extraordinary talent and his wonderful spirit and his charming personality.  Move over Mnem!

I have pinned this thread in the sidebar for easy access over the long weekend.  (It is under Featuring in the sidebar and in the hamburger menu on mobile.)

    What’s Hamilton?

Kidding. I didn’t sign up for Disney+ just for this, but since I have it, we’re planning to watch it sometime this weekend mostly to see what all the fuss is about. Can I confess that I’ve missed a number of other wildly popular musicals also, such as Phantom, Chicago, Cats or Annie? I do kind of wish I’d seen the local Annie production here some years back that had Wanda Sykes in it.

    What’s Hamilton?

It’s a small college in upstate New York, I believe. If you’re not from NY, it’s not surprising that you’re unfamiliar with it.

I’d always wanted to see the show but it wasn’t something I could do, so this will be a good substitute for that experience. Friend added me to her Disney+ account too, so my tickets are on the house, so to speak. Now I’ll finally get all the jokes and quotes!

I’m looking forward to it. But I hate watching opera on streaming, so I’m afraid this will be a little like that. I tried to watch Shostakovich’s Nose the other night and I made it 30 seconds in. I’m hoping Thomas Kail found a way to make it watchable. Normally, translating a theatrical experience onto a little screen doesn’t work.

Cast of “Hamilton” singing at the White House in early January 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV4UpCq2azs

Comment by Daveed Diggs, who played Thomas Jefferson in the original Broadway production, on the performance linked above. The quotation is from a recent article: https://theundefeated.com/features/five-years-ago-hamilton-turned-a-revolution-into-a-revelation-what-now/

“The most iconic moment for me is still when Chris [Jackson] is singing ‘One Last Time.’ Behind him is a portrait of George Washington, and here’s Chris Jackson playing George Washington, sitting right in front of him is Barack Obama, who is in his last term as president, our first Black president in his last term as president, watching a Black man playing the first president, singing about deciding that presidents would have last terms, in front of a portrait of the first president that he’s playing. You saw all of American history at one time. I cried. Everybody cried.”

I got to see Hamilton on Broadway a couple of years ago with my family. Not the original cast, but still completely awesome.

One very clear memory I have from that day is the woman sitting behind me with her two daughters saying before the show, “Girls, look around you. Here are 1,000 people all having the best day of their lives.” What a great thought from her.

    @WaterGirl:

Drunk history is a TV show on Comedy Central. On the show celebrities get drunk and talk about history and then their drunken stories are re-enacted in scenes with other performers.

Here’s a clip on YouTube, from the LMM episode. The full episode is great – it’s on Hulu, I think.

@Shana: Just finished watching it, and they did an amazing job of it. There’s enough views of the whole stage to appreciate the choreography, and enough medium and close shots that it doesn’t feel like a high-quality bootleg. I only have one small quibble with the editing choices after my first viewing. May find more later, but right now I’m very happy with it.

My wife and daughter — huge Hamilton fans — camped out in our family room for a 2 a.m. (Central) premiere, finally staggering to bed after 4:30 a.m. I caught up with them a few hours later. They were tired, but absolutely delighted to have seen it.

I also want to see Hamilton, but passed on Friday’s dawn patrol and had a good night’s sleep instead. This will be running nonstop on Disney for months on end and I’ll have plenty of time to catch it.

    True Hamilton story:

After my husband had heard it enough for the lyrics to start resolving into words, he noticed the line in Wait For It: “My grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher”.

Him: Really? Burr’s grandfather was a preacher?

Me: Yes, he was Jonathan Edwards’ grandson.

Him: I didn’t realize he meant THE fire and brimstone preacher!

Why Hamilton is as frustrating as it is brilliant — and impossible to pin down Hamilton is an impossibly slippery text. The arguments over the show are part of what make it great.
