Merrick Garland, Joe Biden's choice for attorney general, is an experienced judge who has held senior positions at the Justice Department. In 2016, Garland was snubbed by Republicans for a seat on the Supreme Court when he was nominated by President Obama. https://t.co/2sYHZV1ABH

Bahaha! But I’m still sad it’s a white dude. I totally wanted Sally. Still, I think we do kinda owe him one, and now Biden can appoint his replacement to a life seat om the 2ndmost influential bench in the land.

I am glad to see Merrick Garland get justice. Justice. Since not permitted to be considered by the Senate as a Justice. It all works out.

Plus: Younger judge will be elevated to the DC Court of Appeals. To serve well for years. Win all around.

if reputation is something that still matters, Garland has integrity and he is fair. So, while I don’t expect him to be the legal version of William Tecumseh Sherman, I do expect him to right legal wrongs where they find them and to set a precedence for restoring integrity and to out those who are doing illegal acts. It may not be an act of partisan payback but probably more of what we need as a country. I expect that there’s still plenty of GOP wrong-doing that will be prosecuted.

I’m going to go way way out on a limb and guess that if Georgia had gone differently last night, someone else who isn’t a sitting federal judge would have been picked. But now, Biden can nominate a replacement with reasonable assurance that that replacement will get a hearing and a vote.

    Et tu, Pence?

Pence, in a letter to lawmakers Wednesday, rejected Trump’s view that he could unilaterally reject electoral college votes from states won by Biden when he presides over a joint session of Congress.

“My oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,” Pence said in the letter. “My role as presiding officer is largely ceremonial.”

A number of Black folks in my Twitter feed are not happy about the Garland pick, though–the general sense is that he’s too centrist, which is small beer in return for a massive Black effort to deliver not just GA but the presidency. I’m hoping that some additional picks fix that dismay, and meanwhile I’m respecting it. I definitely see the raised middle finger, however, and do not completely disregard the satisfaction of that.

@Annie:   I think he can be re-appointed to the federal court after he does a tour as AG. *shrug*   how long does the guy want to keep working?

    @citizen dave (aka mad citizen):

And so Biden gets to win in the evening or the middle of the night?

Or later, if they can delay it enough that the violent yahoos storming the Capitol shut the count down completely.

The last scenario for a coup I could think of was gunmen busting in and holding Congress hostage today to count Trump’s electors. But this doesn’t sound organized enough.

@narya: that was inevitable, according to Sharpton, he and other CR leaders told Biden in no uncertain terms they had high expectations for Justice. I trust Adam Serwer, and the proof will come in their actions, obviously.

    Ken Thomas @KThomasD· 1h
Transition source confirms Biden’s incoming Justice Dept. team:

    -Merrick Garland AG
    -Lisa Monaco Deputy AG
    -Vanita Gupta Associate AG.
-Kristen Clarke Asst AG for Civil Rights.

    Adam Serwer @AdamSerwer
Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke are people you pick if you are very serious about civil rights enforcement.

Both are career civil rights lawyers. Clarke has lots of experience in the voting section; Gupta is responsible for busting one of the most infamous corrupt cops in recent history. These are serious people who care deeply about this.

For anyone who thinks the civil rights movement is defined by grainy 1960s news footage and austere, mostly male advocates, meet Kristen Clarke. Through leadership roles at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Justice Department and the New York State Attorney General’s Office, this dynamic lawyer has been on the forefront of the 21st century civil rights movement, fighting on behalf of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens over issues of race, gender and sexual orientation.

@Matt McIrvin: Yeah, though see the linked tweet below: Gupta and Clarke seem to be assuaging some of that, and that’s what I’m hoping to see. ETA, well, it’s actually ABOVE this comment. :-)

@germy:@SiubhanDuinne: I have a sneaking suspicion that perhaps Princess Budweiser the Younger isn’t that bright, in spite of having gotten into Columbia, which I’m sure had nothing to do with Daddy’s political standing or Mummy’s vast, vast fortune.
I only see the view in clips, and those are impossible to follow given the screaming, but I suggest a dedicated twitter account could post daily on “Big Words Meghan Used Incorrectly On The Television”
Aidy Bryant did a funny MM spoof based on Herself facing the normal frustrations of daily life with increasingly shrill cries of “I… am… JOHN MCCAIN’S DAUGHTER!“. I suspect she’s not well known enough for the general viewership to get the joke.

I expect that there’s still plenty of GOP wrong-doing that will be prosecuted.

Yeah. I bet that they want an unassailable middle of the roader for doing anything like reducing the white supremacist count in law enforcement agencies.

I’m not saying it’s *right* just that it’s realistic.

I’m late to this thread, but have we talked about the fact that appointing 68 year old Merritt Garland to AG will allow Biden to appoint a YOUNG progressive to fill his lifetime appointment on the SECOND most important court in the land?

Has Biden floated a replacement nominee for Garland on the court yet?   I expect the GA runoff results may have tilted things in Garland’s favor since with control of the Senate, Biden can be assured of his judicial nominees.

    And it started with Trump.
