Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

The lights are all blinking red.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Not all heroes wear capes.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

When we show up, we win.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“But what about the lurkers?”

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Late Night Open Thread: Never Give Up, Never Surrender

by Anne Laurie|  May 31, 202111:59 pm| 57 Comments

This post is in: Biden Administration in Action, Open Threads, Midnight Confessions

As a devout Cynic of the Eeyore school, let us never forget that this world and its bipedal inhabitants have been in a state of decay ever since the Big Bang. Our goal is live our best and truest possible lives, regardless of the morons and the haters. It ain’t easy, but easy is an overrated attribute!

And there is always snark to lift our spirits:

And he delivered. Thanks for the reminder! https://t.co/7IHCBgSKVT

Underpromise and overdeliver. https://t.co/M4dlSTpbfE

— southpaw (@nycsouthpaw) May 28, 2021

(I suspect I’m not the only aspiring agoraphobe who’s dreading the prospects of a Big Gathering Summer of hugs and crowds, either. It’s okay, we can manage, one masked-as-necessary step forward at a time… )

ETA: Just ran across this…

Rich is just mad no one loves him so he feels this is technically not a promise kept. https://t.co/rfPVxDGLbA

Impending Sense of Doom

I just have a sick feeling about where this country is going, and the approaching midterms worry me. I think the filibuster needs to go, but am aware that is not going to fix the deep rot within the American public.

There is quite clearly a cancer in the American soul.

Open Thread: Food Memories (Holiday and Otherwise)

We were talking about Chicago Italian Beef in an earlier thread, and that got me thinking about other foods I miss from my childhood – that I can’t get anymore.

There was a neighborhood bakery literally right around the corner from me.  We lived in a Polish/Bohemian neighborhood that was complete with old ladies wearing babushkas and names that were hard to pronounce.  I miss the kolaczki, rounds of flakey goodness filled with apricot or poppy seed or cherry.  Other flavors, too, but why eat those when there was poppy seed, apricot or cherry?

On Saturdays the bakery made something called “salt horns” which was a soft white bread in a crescent shape, with chunky kosher salt sprinkled on them.  We would get them warm from the oven, and they were so good, absolutely delightful.  Nothing at all like a rich, buttery croissant, except for the shape.

Salerno’s pizza.  Carm’s Italian Beef.  Dumplings.  My mom’s macaroni and cheese.  Which I have never been able to duplicate because I refuse to make it with velveeta, which I am sure is what gave it the creamy texture, that never separated.

Am I the only one, or do you guys miss foods from your childhood?

Another Memorial Day Open Thread

This line from the last tweet in Anne Laurie’s morning post struck me as so very ordinary AND extraordinary:

After the service, President Biden took a few minutes to shake hands and chat with members of the community.

We are so close to getting back to the ordinary social interactions. I cannot tell you how many people I have hugged in the last two weeks, many whom I haven’t even been able to see in a year, and those I would see, but only properly distanced.

Here’s my first poppy this year:

I love these cream poppies.

My red poppies are late to bloom this year, because it’s been unseasonably cold, so last year’s will have to do to honor Memorial Day.

And finally, I grilled these  Stuffed Jalapeno Cheddar Burgers on Friday, before the rain began… If you’re looking for a way to up your burger game today. Recipe here.

This is an all-purpose open thread. I’m off to…work. Which is okay, because it is still raining.

Monday Morning Open Thread: Memorial Day

As a cold rain fell, @POTUS made his annual appearance at the commemoration in New Castle, not far from his Wilmington home, a day before he planned to do the same at Arlington National Cemetery on the official observance.https://t.co/TdYc5ZdtiT

He’s good with loss. He’s had to be:

President Joe Biden marked his first Memorial Day weekend as commander in chief by honoring the nation’s sacrifices in a deeply personal manner as he paid tribute Sunday to those lost while remembering his late son Beau, a veteran who died six years ago to the day…

The death of his son from brain cancer at age 46 is ever-present for the elder Biden, with the loss defining so much of his worldview, dotting his speeches and stirring his empathy for others in pain.

The Memorial Day weekend, long an important moment for Biden, took on added poignancy this year as the president spoke frequently and emotionally of his own loss while expressing the gratitude of a nation for the sacrifices of others.

“I can’t thank you enough for the continued service for the country,” said Biden, addressing a crowd of Gold Star military families and other veterans in a ceremony at War Memorial Plaza in the shadow of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. “I know how much the loss hurts.”

“They’re the guardians of us and we’re the guardians of their legacy,” Biden said of those who served in the armed forces. “Despite all the pain, I know the pride you feel in the loved one you have lost.” …

Biden also underscored his recent decision to pull troops out of Afghanistan later this year, expressing gratitude to service members who took multiple tours of duty in America’s longest war.

He largely avoided the particulars of international affairs on Sunday, though he pledged to press Russia’s Vladimir Putin on human rights during their summit in Geneva next month and said that the moment was right to show the world, and namely China, that the United States was ready to lead again after four years of a largely inward-looking foreign policy under President Donald Trump.

“It’s time to remind everybody who we are,” he said.

The largest (and sturdiest!) rodent in the world, the Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), is abundant and easy to see in the Pantanal. We saw them most often in the canals and lagoons, or lounging near the canals and lagoons. This one is taking a cool bath and keeping an eye out for the caimans!
