Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

This is totally an open thread, but to get the conversation started, I offer these gems, just a few of the Amazon reviews of Marge’s new book.  My personal favorite, hands-down, is the one titled OMG MTG!

After reading the reviews, I went back and clicked “Helpful” for each one.  The reviews really were helpful, lifting my mood immensely.

Nov 30 (Reuters) – Tesla’s (TSLA.O) long-delayed Cybertruck will be priced starting at $60,990, over 50% more than what CEO Elon Musk had touted in 2019 and a cost analysts have said will draw select, affluent buyers.

Sen. Rafael Edward Cruz, who uses the preferred name Ted, has introduced a bill to limit the use of preferred names and pronouns.

    From the linked article

Sen. Ted Cruz has introduced a bill that would limit the use of preferred names by trans people.

The irony, critics point out? The senator, whose legal name is Rafael Edward Cruz, uses a preferred name himself: Ted.

    @Old School

That flavor not until 2025, if then. Price subject to change (upward) in the interim

The company also provided updated details about the pricing, range, and features for the truck, much of which has changed significantly from the originally announced numbers. The rear-wheel drive version of the electric truck will start at $60,990 — up from the original price of $39,900 in 2019 — and will get 250 miles of range on a full charge. That version won’t be available until 2025.

Coming sooner — 2024, Tesla’s order page states optimistically — will be the dual-motor and tri-motor “Cyberbeast” versions. The AWD Cybertruck will start at $79,990, get 340 miles, hit 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds, and do a top speed of 112 mph. And the tri-motor trim will run you $99,990, produce a ridiculous 845 horsepower with 10,296 lb-ft of torque, and get around 320 miles of range. Source

@JaySinWA: The pronouns bit is one thing (still rude and stupid and mean) but names??? Tons and tons of exceedingly cis/het people use a different name than what is on their birth certificate. Whether nicknames like Ted or a middle name or whatever else. I presume he’s trying to go after someone for using a name that isn’t typically associated with the gender they were assigned at birth, but like…that feels so thin. So many names now are pretty gender neutral, and names are just made up anyway. Why is Mary typically a “female” name and Mark is typically “male”? Because people just decided that.

Christ, the right wing are a bunch of wimpy scared little bigot-babies.

@Old School: Apparently their “Cybertruck is now on sale” event needs to come with a big asterisk of “only 12 trucks were actually delivered, bo a set of very carefully selected customers and everyone else eager to spend $80k on this …thing will have to wait until some nebulous time next year”. So, basically a small set of undoubtedly tweaked and adjusted models delivered to a small set of Tesla superfans, meaning that any vaguely reasonable assessment of the things will have to wait until that nebulous “next year”.

@NotMax: I don’t really give a shit, because the product is just ridiculous, but how many kW is a charge for a vehicle that heavy and over-torqued to also get (allegedly) 320 miles of range?

We were just in a rental Pacifical plug-in hybrid for a week for Tgiving. It was a decent vehicle! We only had a 120v plug, so charging was slow, but also I didn’t feel like we were ripping off the VRBO host since we were adding like 15-18 miles of range while parked for multiple hours. Couldn’t have been that many kW.

But the mega-maxa-loookit-me-Im-pathetic-Truck? $$$ per charge, I assume.

@dmsilev: Saw some stills of the Cyber‘s 35mph direct impact (ie, not the ofset) crash test. The rear, steerable wheels look like they crumple on their axle by the third published frame.

    At 35mph.

It’s gonna be a total p.o.s. But we know that already. Also the hood may double as a guillotine in vehicle-pedestrian crashes, per some critics on Bsky.

So, IPCC, getting a little shrill noting that we’re actually losing ground toward the Paris targets/date says, reading between the lines, that if we just took out the top 1% of earners globally, we’d be fine – they’re the ones doing all the damage. Like, knock this list down as many pegs as necessary, and nobody else needs to do anything more than just hold station on emissions.

Wondering if this idea takes hold.

@RaflW: 123kWh. Tesla has a pretty efficient drivetrain, I’ll give them that, but then the vehicle will on average probably only carry as much stuff as my bike, and it only needs a 750Wh battery for 45 miles.

I wondered what the disaster would be on the rollout, what was being covered up.  If they were only able to release 12, and picked the recipients, it must be awful.  This is a truly Muskian display of “pretend the product exists.”

    @NotMax:

Amazing how the really powerful one is the one that isn’t available yet.  Jam tomorrow, the check is in the mail, and the fish that got away.
