On January 6th, I defended our democracy from insurrectionists as a Capitol Police Officer. After, President Biden honored me with the Presidential Citizens Medal.
Today, I’m running for Congress to stop Trump’s MAGA extremists & ensure it never happens again.

My first thought was, hasn’t he done enough for us? And my second was, good for him, we need more integrity in elected office.
I have a post scheduled for this afternoon for Pres. Biden’s speech (which has been moved, it was originally scheduled for tomorrow).
President Biden moved his speech on democracy, marking the anniversary of Jan. 6, up a day due to the incoming winter storm in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions this weekend. The president was set to travel to the Philadelphia area on Saturday to mark the third anniversary of the riots at the U.S. Capitol.
This is an open thread
ETA:
Dunn is running to succeed retiring Rep. John Sarbanes, a Democrat who represents Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, located west of Baltimore. He left the Capitol Police force late last year, ending a 15-year career.
“On Jan. 6th, 2021, I did my duty as a police officer and as an American and defended our nation’s Capitol from violent insurrectionists,” Dunn said in a statement announcing his candidacy. “Today, I’m running for Congress because the forces that spurred that violent attack are still at work and as a patriotic American, it is my duty to defend our democracy.”
Baud
I’m sad he moves his speech. Speaking in a snowstorm would have been very Valley Forge.
TaMara
I’m wondering how successful Dunn’s campaign will be against a sitting Democrat – unless I missed that the current Rep is retiring?Nevermind, he IS retiring. I missed that.
RaflW
“Mr. Dunn, 40, will enter a crowded Democratic primary field to replace Representative John Sarbanes, the retiring 17-year incumbent. Five state lawmakers have already announced their campaigns to represent the central Maryland district, which snakes between Washington and Baltimore. Whoever emerges from the primary in the overwhelmingly Democratic district is almost certain to win the general election.” (NYT)

@TaMara: I added that additional info up top and now I’m going to walk the dogs. I’ll be bundled up and they’ll drag me along, as they love the cold. Silly pups.

@Baud:
Actually more Morristown the following year.
Yeah, I’m an American Rev nut but I get the point. Pedantry bubbles up in the oddest ways.

Looks like my area is on the rain side of the snow-rain line. Just as well – would be a total bummer to have the Perfect Snow when Miss Jazz is too crippled to enjoy it.
Ken
@TaMara: Don’t blame yourself, I am also not completely up-to-date on the status of all 435 Congressional districts. The fault lies with Stephen Colbert’s move to CBS — his “Better Know a District” was a great help.
Geminid
@Baud: It would have been fitting for Biden to speak in a snowstorm, but I’m glad they moved it up because outdoor speeches seem better on a sunny day. It ought to be a pretty one up there.
Baud
@Geminid:
Well, I hope he at least crosses the Delaware afterwards.
RevRick
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: The teamsters we’re demanding a hike in pay or they wouldn’t deliver the supplies. Because inflation was ripping through the economy.

Dunn is incredibly well placed to get all the scuttlebutt on reps who are misbehaving in the workplace. Some people seem to think that security services are blind and deaf. If he is elected, he could leverage that background into some significant power.
vigilhorn
I wish he’d run in MD 1.
RaflW
@Geminid: Amy Klobuchar worked a snowstorm speech to great effect, but that was at least as much that it worked with her true-blue Minnesotan image as anything else. And the bump she got was as fleeting as this winter has seemed so far…
Uncle Cosmo
Per the MD State Board of Elections website last update, dated yesterday (4 January 2024), 10 candidates had filed for the Democratic nomination to the House of Representatives from MD’s 3rd Congressional District. Harry Dunn’s name was not among them. Not that it matters all that much, the primary isn’t until 14 May, but if he is going to file it ought to be soon.
(FTR I know nothing about the filed candidates & probably ought to do some research before I post more about this race.)
Jackie
@Baud: The Lead Insurrectionist is speaking twice tomorrow in Iowa. What’s the weather forecast prediction?
Hoping mightily for a blizzard🤞🏻

Court says even passive members of Jan. 6 mob can be convicted of disorderly conduct
This is very good news.
Uncle Cosmo
For dogsake, why? That’s the blood-red Eastern Shore & attachments. Unless there’s a bluenami nationwide, we ain’t gonna pry entitled-motherfucking-anesthsiologist-high-on-his-own-supply Andy Harris out of that seat.
IMO what we need much more is a strong candidate to hold MD-06, where the incumbent, a liquor-stores-bazillionaire named Drone or Crone or somesuch, has delusions of senatoriality and is running to succeed Ben Cardin.

Looks like the NYC Metro area is going to be on the “rain” side of the weekend storm: current forecast for Sat. nite/Sunday is temps in the mid-upper 30sF: with mucho precipitation: pretty miserable, but at least it will drain away (one hopes)…

@Uncle Cosmo:
I’m pretty sure the filing deadline is Feb 9, so there is some time left.

@Baud: Political Media: “Delaware is so boring!”

@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Jockey Hollow!

@Baud: Crossing the Delaware is fine. But crossing Delaware is problematic. The I-95 is a f#%-ing speed trap.
RevRick
@zhena gogolia: I went on a date with my new girlfriend (now Mrs. RevRick) there for our freshman orientation week!
Another Scott
All props to Dunn, sincerely, but I’m not willing to jump in with both feet yet. Especially if there are already 10 declared candidates. Let’s see what all the candidates are like, and how well they advocate for policies that can move the country forward.
My $0.02.
Cheers,
Scott.
RevRick
@Another Scott: I studiously refuse to get involved in primaries in other states. I leave that to their voters.
RandomMonster
I hope Biden commemorates that our revolutionary army “manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do.”
Geminid
@RevRick: I don’t get involved in other states’ primaries, but I follow them with interest. Mainly, I want to find out more about Democratic voter behavior, and these open-seat primaries will show something in that regard.
But I sometimes root for particular candidates, like Sharice Davids in 2018. That Kansas primary was to nominate a candidate to oppose a Republican incumbent.
And I defintely rooted for Shontelle Brown in the 2021 OH-10 special election primary.

Nyt reports NYAG says civil fraud trial judge should
“penalize the former president about $370 million, saying the trial had demonstrated that he had gained that amount through unlawful conduct.”
Chief Oshkosh
@BlueGuitarist:$370 million here, $370 million there…pretty soon it adds up!
zhena gogolia
@RevRick: It’s a lovely spot.

I personally know several of the candidates for this seat, and at least three of them would be very good. I don’t know anything about Officer Dunn, but good luck to him. I’d say Democrats in Maryland have an embarrassment of riches.
vigilhorn
@Uncle Cosmo: I live in MD 1. Andy doesn’t even have a Democratic opponent this year. Always a mistake. Ask Howard Dean.
