Lighter fare for those who want it!
We have our first snow today, not a lot of snow, but at least the ground is covered and is lily white.
In the spring, I turned half of my front lawn into a flower bed. I keep meaning to share some pictures from the spring and summer, but I haven’t gotten to that yet. But here’s what it looks like when snow-covered!
SiubhanDuinne
Does your menagerie enjoy the snow?
It’s very pretty!
Xantar
They predicted snow in Baltimore. I said it’s not gonna happen and we will get rain instead.
It’s raining right now.
Maybe one day they’ll get it right.

First snow here in the Western Cascade foothills to. Not enough to measure. Forecast for the Cascade passes is snow, snow and more snow. Only the highest ski areas have opened so far.
mali muso
@Xantar: Yeah, my area was supposed to get 10 inches according to the forecasts early this week. That went down to 6-8. Then last night the forecast said 3-6. So far today we have only had slush, sleet, a dusting of snow and probably an inch of random cold wet accumulation. Much to the dismay of my kiddo who was really geared up for some sledding and snowball making.

I took Mr. Bear’s cone off on Thursday afternoon, but by Friday evening I had to put it back on because he had opened up the sore by his eye again. We have a vet appt on Monday. That will be 28 days since they first identified that he has MRSP (MRSA for cats) and prescribed on of the small number of antibiotics that the bacteria is not resistant to.
Guessing that since it’s not totally healed (though much better) we will get a new antibiotic.
Poor Mr. Bear was so happy to be out of his cone, and he got right to work on grooming the spots that had matted when he couldn’t reach them. In the day without the cone I had been finding small clumps of Mr. Bear hair all over the house.
In case anyone missed Mr. Bear with his cone.

I remember Urbana snow like it was yesterday!
frosty
@Xantar: We’ve got a little bit here north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Maybe a half inch. Sticking to the cars and lawn and barely on the road. So far I won’t need to use the shovels I got out yesterday.
Not quite the nor’easter they were threatening us with all week.

Lake Tahoe is getting the second big storm of the season. 3-6 inches in town, with up to 10 inches on the peaks. 25 mph winds.

When I went to Kroger this morning I noticed more people masked than usual. It was still not as many as I would like, but local news has been reporting that flu is widespread in Memphis, so maybe people are learning. Slowly.

Snowing here in SE PA, but a switch over to a wintry-mix is coming.
It looks like about 1? of snow so far. Lots of birds are coming to the bird feeders and juncos and sparrows digging little holes in the snow to get at the white millet I scatter on the ground.

Looks like the amount Chicago got.

It’s a gorgeous day here in the Texas Hill Country, where we have taken the Hill Country Flyer train to beautiful downtown Burnet. Had a nice lunch on Main Street. Now back on board awaiting the return journey to Cedar Park. Lovely way to spend a Saturday!

We’ve had a decent amount of rain over the past few weeks here in the North Bay, and my weather app tells me it’s drizzling now but…it is not. At least not outside my windows. But it’s been nice that after last winter’s approximately 714 inches of rain, we’re not going right back to drought conditions.
Baud
Did someone say Snow?
Kristine
Poor Bear. I hope the new med works.
Snowing lightly here in NE Illinois, and since the temp is above freezing it’s all probably going to mush-melt. We are supposedly going to get pasted on Friday, though—WGN says 3-5″, while Wunderground says 6″ with an inch or so before and after. But, early days. Everything could change by then.
I’m ready for Spring.
Alison Rose
@Baud: God, how badly was I hoping it would be what it turned out to be? Oh, the memories of middle school dances…

Ooh! That’s nice. We had a few mins of graupel and then just rain.

We’re getting the first real snow of the season today, which is very late here in the Upper Peninsula.

@WaterGirl: I put our two black cats into some onesies to stop them from licking their fur.
Something interesting happened to my more anxious cat. It was like a sudden change in behavior. Like he stopped being skittish and I could easily pick him up when before he would run away.

@Baud: knew what it was even before I previewed the link :)
Second snow here in Reading, PA. Looks similar to WaterGirl’s pics, though it supposed to turn to rain later in the day. At least it’s pretty atm. Took a number of pics that I’ll send to my parents, and friends. They always say, “Pretty! Glad we’re not in it!”
OzarkHillbilly
“Lily white”… When I was a kid I loved to sit and listen to the old man and his siblings talk about the growing up in Joliet and the Depression. One thing that stuck with me was how on day one of a snow fall it was white, by day 2 it was dingy gray, day 3 dark gray, day 4…. Black, from all the coal being burned at the steel mill and in the homes for heat.
WaterGirl
@cain: This is on his face, right by his eye, so it’s not about licking, it’s about scratching and rubbing.
Interesting that you saw such a change to your anxious cat. Maybe it’s kind of like the thunder coats that calm anxious dogs?

@OzarkHillbilly: I tell you what, I don’t have a single maternal atom in my body, but I adore these kinds of videos. The sheer amazement and joy on their faces when everything comes into focus is the purest thing ever.
My oldest brother had to wear glasses from a very young age due to a crossed eye, and my mom said he had a moment like that when he first had them on.

@OzarkHillbilly:
Grew up in a neighborhood built in the oughts and teens. Homes had oil furnaces except the one directly behind ours, which was coal. When their furnace ran the chimney belched midnight-black smoke and since this was Seattle, heating season was roughly Oct-April.
I can only imagine the fallout on a block where every home had coal heat.
Our steel mills were electric, luckily. Still messy, but not MESSY.

eta that once again, if Biden said the exact same things TIFG says in that speech, the right would show up at the White House with a straitjacket and drag him off to a rubber room

@WaterGirl: Poor sweet baby boy! Big hugs to him and to you. It’s so stressful when a fur kid is feeling bad.

@Alison Rose: What amazes me is the self-control of the corporate media when they can overlook, “All I know about magnets is this, give me a glass of water, let me drop it on the magnets, that’s the end of the magnets,” in favor of telling us for the 700th time that Joe Biden is old.

Partly cloudy and 70f here in the land down under. We’ve gone from really hot – mid 90s F – to cool and rainy. Flooding in some places around the country and bush fires elsewhere. A typical Australian summer.

If it hasn’t been mentioned yet, the FAA has ordered all 737 MAX 9 planes – the one that had the door panel rip away over Portland yesterday – grounded pending inspections.
The air traffic audio from the flight is at https://youtu.be/29ghXy6O2dc?si=lx2OyZafGS6NesB-. Great professionalism in a stressful situation. Keep in mind the flight crew initially had no idea why the plane was depressurized or if the airframe was taking serious damage or what.

@smith: “Trump never makes a single note of sense when he speaks, but this one time Biden tripped over a sandbag, so let’s talk to some white people in a diner about why that’s way worse.”

@RevRick: Yes. It fits in well with my own conceptions and is worded perfectly.
TBone
@HumboldtBlue: hahahahaha hahahaha!
smith
@Alison Rose: The thing about the Great Sandbag Scandal that gets me is that the question that should have been asked, in all caps, was WHY THE HELL WAS THERE A SANDBAG WHERE PEOPLE HAD TO WALK ON STAGE? I watched that video –a much younger person than Biden could easily have tripped on it, given its placement. But the story was old, feeble Grandpa Biden, isn’t it time we looked for a nursing home for him?

Very breezy and rainy on the coast. The sun just poked its rays out, but I doubt it will last long, The forecast is for showers over the next few days. It was blowing hard this morning, in fact it took out a downspout.

@Alison Rose: I can’t see the TikToks any more.
Eyeroller
@zhena gogolia: It is not at all new, it’s just that very few infants need them. It is due to things like cross eye, or eyes that for various reasons have very different refraction so they are at risk of or have developed “lazy eye,” or other reasons that seem a little less common.

@pluky:
Friends’ Bernese mountain dog would go outside when they had snow and just plop herself in it. They had a hell of a time getting her back into the house.

@Eyeroller: I’m going to guess that doctors are better at identifying vision problems in infants than they used to be, probably new screening techniques have been developed.
And of course, we are all video-taping everything these days so the moments these babies can finally see in focus is documented.

Snow update. Heavenly Ski Resort (which spans both CA and NV) is closed due to whiteout conditions. Plus I parked my car outside for an hour, and when I came back it was covered in more than 2 inches of snow!
In-town driving has been interesting since the snowplows can’t keep up. Fortunately everyone is taking it slow, but making left turns has been adventurous due to several inches of powder in the median.

Meanwhile, more about the issue with the 737-9 – the FAA has ordered inspection of the “mid-cabin door plug” – AviationWeek.com:

Hmmm…. It’s obviously early, but it looks like potential cost-cutting biting Boeing in the butt again.
Cheers,
