do you know how much enthusiasm you have to have to go to a polling place in new hampshire in winter to vote for someone whose name is not even on the ballot? for delegates that don't even exist? i mean cmon.

Joe Biden isn’t on the ballot in New Hampshire.

I so, so, so desperately want to be able to tell my local colleagues here in Greece that the inevitability of Trump is belied by Biden getting more votes as a write-in candidate than Trump got as an official candidate in the New Hampshire primaries. I’ve already brought out the bon mot that over the last few years, Dems have been doing better at the polls than in the polls, but that number would be a really big tangible argument, if it’s true.
lowtechcyclist
Trump’s won IA and NH with just barely above 50% in each one. He may not be an incumbent President, thank the Lord, but he’s essentially the incumbent nominee. And all his putative rivals have dropped out, other than Nikki Haley, who isn’t exactly a strong opponent. And he’s still just barely clearing 50%. That’s really, really weak.
ETA: Meanwhile, Biden aced NH without even being on the ballot. True, we don’t know whose names are on those >13,000 write-in ballots, but I’ll bet it’s Biden on almost all of them.
He’s the best President in my lifetime. We want to keep him around for another term. End of story.
Betty Cracker
@Bruce K in ATH-GR: I saw that claim earlier and looked it up; it isn’t true. But that’s no reflection on Biden. Fewer Dems and indies voted in the Dem primary because it’s not really a contest. Biden did outperform his “rival” Dean Phillips by a much larger margin than Trump beat Haley.
Also, I saw this in a Minn. newspaper article about Dean Phillips lurking outside a NH polling place and accosting voters yesterday:
Ha!

From the latest numbers I can find, Biden’s share when all precincts are in has dropped from above 70% to a mere 65% of an election that made no difference where he was not on the ballot. I think that Vermin Supreme-mentum may have made up some of the difference.

Kornancki said Trump beat Haley by 55 among Republican voters.
Matt McIrvin
@lowtechcyclist: The majority of the write-ins have actually been processed by now. They’re nearly all Biden.
Trump did get the largest absolute number of votes because only a little over 100,000 people voted in the pretend Democratic primary, but almost 300,000 voted in the actual, binding, contested Republican primary. So if reporters want to plug this as bad news for Biden they could take that angle.
Baud
@Matt McIrvin:
Apparently, a lot of Dems crossed over to help Haley.

The bad election news from my neighborhood is that the proposal to build a new (very expensive) building for the regional voc-tech high school went down in flames, because all the bougier towns other than mine, where the school actually is, rejected it overwhelmingly.
The alternative is going to be to spend about 3/4 as much just to bring the existing building up to code as required by law, and I think we get less money from outside to do that so it might actually cost us more, so I guess we’re gonna do that.

I read about Trump’s vindictive victory speech in this morning’s Politico Playbook. From the description and the excerpts, Trump really showed his ass. Evidently Haley’s speech infuriated him.
Playbook also says a new book about Fani Willis’s election interference case recounts how Lindsay Graham threw Trump under the bus in his grand jury testimony. Michael Isikoff and his coauthor say that after resisting his subpoena for months, Graham found the experience “cathartic.” The book recounts how when Graham ran into Fani Willis in the courthouse afterwards, he thanked Willis and gave her a hug.

Matt McIrvin
@Princess: You are correct–it’s only semi-open and only independents can vote in either primary. You can’t change your existing party registration day-of.
However, if you have not declared a party, requesting a ballot for a party automatically enrolls you with that party unless you sign some kind of form requesting otherwise at the polling place. That’s a wrinkle of NH that I didn’t know about! It doesn’t work that way in Massachusetts.

@Matt McIrvin: Crossover voting is friction-free in South Carolina and Virginia because those states do not register by party. I don’t think that will affect the result in South Carolina because Trump seems to have the Sputh Carolina Republican party locked down tight.
Virginia could be a good state for Haley if she’s stays in the race. I don’t see Haley winning Virginia, but I think she could make a good showing here.

This was part of a DK front page post earlier this morning:
My first reaction is “what a marooon” b/c, well, I’m an informed voter. But as we’ve talked about in the past, “normies” are different creatures so how to reach them?
It then dawned on me that while a lot of people bitch about the various judicial routes being undertaken to punish the Orange Fart Cloud (and how they’re too slow, not happening at all, mismanaged, pick-you-favorite-criticism), they do have an important feature in helping edumacate a “normie” voter like the “independent” voter (aka Embarrassed Republican Voter) cited this morning in DK.
Meaning even if the judicial processes don’t move fast enough or end have a satisfactory ending (Hair Furor in jail or head affixed to the end of a pike), if they sway normie voters to either at best vote for Biden or at worst, stay at home/throw-it-away-on-some-3rd-party-moran, they’re worth it.

Electoral-vote has an amusing note on the Trump campaign (warning: picture of him). For those who don’t want to click through (especially after that warning), the picture — posted by his account on Truth Social — shows Trump praying in a church. It is hard to believe that the media is spinning NH as a big Trump win. What NH showed us yesterday is that Trump has a lock on the Republican nomination, and Independents will not vote for him. You can’t win a nation-wide election with only Republican votes. The Republican Party is a minority Party. If every Republican in the country votes for Trump in November, he still loses big.
