Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

I really should read my own blog.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

We will not go back.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Today is the 20th anniversary of the first same-sex weddings in San Francisco after Newsom said YOLO:

History was made 20 years ago today at San Francisco City Hall.

Gavin Newsom, who had taken office as mayor of San Francisco the month before, directed the city clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the first in California. He said he believed that denying gay and lesbian couples the right to marry was a form of discrimination.

More than 4,000 gay couples were married at San Francisco City Hall over the next month, in what supporters called the “Winter of Love.”

    …

As the story goes, in January 2004, Newsom attended President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address at the invitation of Representative Nancy Pelosi, a longtime family friend. Sitting in the Capitol, Newsom heard the president speak against same-sex marriage.

They had been ruled to be legal in Massachusetts a few months earlier, but weddings had not yet begun there. And Vermont was the only state at the time that allowed civil unions. Newsom, who had been mayor of San Francisco for just 12 days at the time of the speech, decided he wanted to take a stand. He said he felt a moral obligation to open the doors to same-sex marriage.

Unlike many other big-city mayors, Newsom had the power to open those doors: In California, marriage licenses are the province of county government, and San Francisco is both a city and a county, with a single combined government.

“He is president of the United States, and I am just a guy who does stop signs and tries to revitalize parks,” Newsom told The Times in 2004. “I know my role. But I also know that I’ve got an obligation that I took seriously to defend the Constitution. There is simply no provision that allows me to discriminate.”

@soapdish: It’s all kind of in limbo at the moment, so there’s not a lot to say.  Jack Smith DID turn over the documents to Trump, as ordered, but they are not allowed to release them publicly.

The jack Smith motion for reconsideration is still hanging out there – waiting for a response from Loose Cannon.

Apparently in the Jack Smith filing, they even included a relevant case that Cannon worked on when she was part of the DOJ – possibly the only case she ever worked on where there was actually a ruling – which supported the position that Jack Smith is taking.

Scuttlebutt is that that was a shot over the bow from Jack Smith.

Right now it seems to be a waiting game.

Cannon can either: 1) back up and change her ruling or 2) stand her ground and Jack Smith takes it to the 11th circuit.

@raven: What are they saying on MSNBC?

@WaterGirl: Jack Smith DID turn over the documents to Trump, as ordered, but they are not allowed to release them publicly.

If they are in the hands of Trump’s lawyers, that might be OK.  But if he gets his hot little hands on them himself, no way he fails to make them public.  (The only hope is that he manages to confuse what the actual names are,)

I’m back like a bad penny to continue making a major fuss about Beyonce dropping not one, but two country songs during yesterday’s sportsball thingy. This absolute creative genius and artist is on a trajectory to school us all about our various American music genres and their African and Black American origins. Do yourself a favor and check these two (I can’t wait until record store day to get the vinyl)

@jmh: Everyone thinks you can’t quilt t-shirts. You can. They just need iron-on backing to stailize them.

Knits are not stable. They fade and shrink always. Sophisticated fabric people can easily deal with it.

Woven fabric you wash it once and you understand it.

Knits shrink forever through multiple washings.

You cannot sew a knit fabric and reliably selll it. Boil them and everytime they come out even smaller. Knits are unstable ( aka known as nuts.)

@WaterGirl: Yes, Beyonce is intentionally rolling through American Music genres and reclaiming their roots; and by extension; American Popular Culture. I cannot wait until she comes for rock and roll, and then jazz.

That 16 Carriages is a song about life on the road, and what an artist sacrifices to bring their music to the people. Both my brothers are roadies and so this one cuts to the quick. For Jackals who are not country music fans, please accept my apologies for relentlessly throwing Beyonce into Open Threads, but please also consider a close listen to perhaps hear the larger truths about ourselves and who we “reward” for their efforts.

HAHA! Way to go Virginia House Democrats!

“Virginia Democrats have spent the 2024 legislative session blocking most bills that would limit abortion access in the state, but one effort was allowed to advance to the full House floor Monday and political intrigue followed,” Virginia Public Radio reports.

“Delegate Tim Griffin (R) brought the bill which would block state funds from being spent on abortion in any circumstances, including rape, incest or the life of the mother.”

“Griffin’s plea came after House Democrats purposefully put the bill on the floor to get a recorded vote on the controversial issue. Griffin tried to amend the effort Monday by adding those exceptions, claiming he meant to put them there originally, and putting it in line with the Hyde Amendment which blocks federal taxpayer abortion coverage with those exceptions. But the Democratic majority denied him that amendment.”

This says to me that Trump is desperate.  He has to pay $83 million dollars in the next 30 days that he does not have.  He’s spent all the PAC money.  He needs the RNC’s money, and the RNC isn’t just forking it over to him for his private use.

I suspect he’s going to have to sell or put liens on his properties to cover the money, and it will have to be at fair prices, which will torture his ego even worse than losing the properties.  He seems incredibly invested in his public claim that every location he owns is worth 10 times what it actually is.

@TBone: Giddins, who worked with her on this project has been on a mission for years to share the Black legacy of the banjo and bring it back into Black musical culture. I bitch about Kentucky but Kentucky Educational Television (KET) has the most incredible documentaries that you may not see on PBS. One of them was about the role banjos and guitars played in Black culture and how they have gone out of favor in the Black Community. Rhiannon Giddens formed the Carolina Chocolate Drops to resurrect folk music and awareness of those instruments. That’s where I first learned about her.

@sab: Some quilters like making t-shirt quilts, some hate it.  It’s a slightly different skill set that some quilters don’t want to acquire, lol!

All I can say is if anyone wants to get into t-shirt quilt construction, you better have lots of graph paper, pencils, erasers  and a good grasp of “quilt” arithmetic!  T-shirt graphics are not uniform in size, hence graphing and math.

@sab: Well, I don’t design them (oh, how I wish I was that artistic!) I buy patterns.  Now, I will change an appliqué to fit a theme.  The Headdress Kitty?  The real appliqué is a kitty with a witch hat – and just the head, no body.  I enlarged the appliqué, drew a body and changed the hat.  I made this same appliqué with a Santa hat, too.

I will use parts of an appliqué pattern on other things, too.  I’ve used the sunflower appliqués on other quilts because I like how they look.

@sab: What would your kitties think about this crazy cat?  This is an appliqué I may put in a quilt…

    @Alison Rose:

Plus you don’t have to poke holes in them!

    I would never do that!

Quilting fool sewed a flap in mine that a dowel could go through, but I didn’t even want that.  Just the beautiful quilt block, for me.
