Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

I really should read my own blog.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

All hail the time of the bunny!

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

When I was faster i was always behind.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

The words do not have to be perfect.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

    Best of luck to the rafflers. I recently got a(nother) quilt from QuiltingFool’s Etsy store – she does just astounding work. You’re in for an amazing treat.

    Thanks QuiltingFool, Watergirl, and everyone helping to support Ukraine.

    @TBone: I have been so busy this past week, I haven’t read every thread.  Actually, I never read all the threads; only the ones that interest me.  But these past couple of weeks I haven’t even been able to read the ones that interest me.

    Did I miss some particular event related to Soprano2 and her husband’s situation?

    So, I get David Corn’s (of Mother Jones) newsletter, and he had a couple of issues in a row where he discussed Biden’s age. He has been pretty even-handed about it, noting the absurd disparity between how the media covers Biden’s age versus Trump’s, and also that Trump’s brain is breaking down like a Yugo and that Biden has gotten a lot of great stuff done. He also noted that Biden’s age is indeed an issue for a lot of voters, and speculated about what people might want to see happen with the ticket, but he never said “Biden should step down” or whatever.

    In some issues, he runs responses from readers, and in today’s there were a number of them related to this topic. One dude, who I would bet all of Elon’s money is white, said:

    Everyone is missing the point. Vice President Kamala Harris is less popular than Biden. She has never had a large following. The fact that she is next in line makes Biden’s age an important issue. He needs a new more likable running mate to allow people to get past the age issue.

    I’m guessing there would be no woman and/or POC this dude would find “likable”. (Corn replied that bouncing Harris would lead to massive conflict among Democratic voters and would sharply alienate Black women who are the strongest part of the coalition.)

    Then another dodo said that Biden should remain the candidate, but he should replace Harris with Gavin Newsom (and make Harris AG and send Garland “to a tortoise farm”). And I laughed so hard at the idea that Newsom would be more liked among swing state voters than Harris. Yes, he’s a white man, but anyone who thinks he isn’t completely (and unfairly) loathed among certain portions of the national electorate must have been living under a rock for the last few years. (Corn again pointed out that this would be a huge diss to Harris and a lot of voters would be rightly pissed about it.)

    Misogynoir is a powerful force among liberals, sadly. I love our Veep. These people can pound sand.

    February 17, 2024 at 11:24 am

    @Alison Rose: The question, “if not Biden, they who?” is always where these arguments just fall short.  No one does as well against Trump than Biden does.

    A new  Emerson College poll found that

    Biden Performs Strongest Against Trump among Prominent Democrats
    A new Emerson College Polling national survey on the potential 2024 presidential election reveals a tight race between former President Donald Trump and current President Biden, with 45% of voters favoring Trump, 44% supporting Biden, and 11% undecided. Support for both candidates has decreased by one point since the last national poll in January. In other hypothetical matchups, Trump leads with 46% against Vice President Kamala Harris’s 43% and California Governor Gavin Newsom’s 36%. Against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Trump maintains a lead with 45% compared to Whitmer’s 33%, with 22% undecided.

    So yeah, everybody’s got an opinion on why Biden is not the perfect candidate but no other possible candidates do as well against Trump as President Biden does.

    Bold added.

    @zhena gogolia: I thought the same thing, fearing that Soprano2’s husband might have taken a bad turn.

    It may be good that I missed most of the threads yesterday, because I feel really strongly that Fani Willis is being treated in a way that no man in this situation would ever be treated.

    And I’m kind of shocked that McAffee (one or two Fs) would let that witch hunt of a trial go on for two days, with no apparently submission of, you know, EVIDENCE, ahead of time that would have made a trial like that appropriate.

    I try to avoid the kerfuffles, as in I bite my tongue every single fucking time someone brings up the former senator from MN, but it’s really hard because people spout all sorts of untruths when that subject comes up.

    So maybe it’s good that i missed a kerfuffle about Fani Willis yesterday.

    If there’s a good twitter account that covered the trial well, with clips, and someone is inclined to point me toward it, I would be appreciative.

    I recently bought two pink cat quilts from QuiltingFool as a Christmas present for my sister who loves both cats and the color pink. @TBone: Thanks for that, I wanted to wait a little until the thread had some comments before posting. The Traveling Vet came to our house last night. I’d never done that before, we always took them to the vet when it was their time. It was as nice as a euthanasia could be. Strangely enough, last night after I came home from Jazzercize Nitro got up and went into the kitchen, I think he was looking for food. I’d had to bring water to him in the living room. Anyway, she helped him over the Rainbow Bridge in the nicest way possible. It was good that our other dog was there, that way he knows what happened rather than just knowing that the other dog went away and didn’t come back. My husband remembered that we did it, although he asked me several times what we did with Nitro (she took his body to be cremated). I called our regular vet’s office this morning to tell them what happened. He had a great 5 years with us, and I kept him healthy as long as I could, but it was his time. The hardest thing about our pets is that we outlive them. I think we’ll wait a little while before we try to get another dog. Sometimes they come to us, that’s what happened with Nitro.

    @WaterGirl: It was my dog Nitro, I posted about it above. He’s had terrible arthritis in his legs for awhile, plus he has a tumor that the vet said isn’t worth removing since he’s so old (15 or 16) that he might not recover from the surgery. This week he decided he couldn’t stand or walk anymore, so we had to euthanize him. It was hard, but he was suffering and there’s no way he can live any kind of a life if he can’t walk.

    Exactly! The notion that we should pick up a few swing voters by throwing our most reliable demographic under the bus, which is exactly what we’d be doing by replacing MVP on the ticket…excuse me, but that’s f’ing crazy.

    And basically any change to the ticket at this point would be disruptive and signal uncertainty, that we’re too easily swayed by bullshit from the commentariat and don’t have what it takes to stay the course.

    The election is just eight and a half months away. Biden/Harris is our ticket, period, end of story, and anyone supposedly on our side who has a problem with that can just get over it or die mad.

    @Scout211:  Very interesting thing about all those polls.. Trump’s range is basically between 43-45%.  That’s his ceiling.  That 11-22% undecided is highly unlikely to break his way.  All things considered, by the time November rolls around, I doubt if he would get 40%.

    My younger son, the HS history teacher, who is fairly aware, but avoids blogs or cable television, told me the other day that, if Biden doesn’t step down, then he should get rid of Harris and picking her was a mistake.  I informed him that if he hadn’t picked her, he probably would have lost in 2020.  He said that she hasn’t done anything.  I told him that she has done more than any VP in history with the possible exception of Biden himself.  His response was, “How come you never hear of it?”

    I just told him to think about it for a moment.  He went “Ahhh, I think I understand.”

    @WaterGirl: Yesterday was an interesting day in the hearing.  Bradley, the “star witness” got his star tarnished a bit.

    Link (not a gift link-my one freebie, I guess)

    But Terrence Bradley, a former law partner of special prosecutor Nathan Wade, repeatedly declined to answer questions under oath about what he knew about the romantic relationship between Willis and Wade. Bradley, who previously represented Wade in his ongoing divorce, cited concerns he might violate attorney-client privilege and could be disbarred.

    However, in a dramatic moment, an attorney for Bradley later asked Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee if his client could be released from that privilege after a prosecutor claimed during cross-examination that Bradley and Wade ended their legal partnership after Bradley was accused of sexually assaulting an employee and a client. Prosecutors implied this raised questions about Bradley’s credibility as a witness and whether he had ill will toward Wade.

    Bradley, who emphatically denied he had sexually assaulted anyone, admitted the employee’s claims had led him to sever his partnership with Wade. He testified that he still considered Wade to be “a friend.”

    The revelation, which came near the end of a two-day evidentiary hearing on misconduct claims against Willis, led McAfee to abruptly end Bradley’s testimony. McAfee said he would meet with Bradley and his attorney in a private hearing to consider whether Wade’s attorney-client privilege claim with Bradley had been pierced and whether Bradley could be forced to answer questions about Willis and Wade.

    The point is the discussion isn’t that anyone expects Biden to replace Harris.

    The point is to make a demand that they know Biden will reject so they can point to that as a justification for not supporting Biden.

    @Alison Rose:

    This is bullshit. Not that you said it, but that you had to, because VP Harris is a woman. She is a US citizen, she is very good at her job. She was very good in her previous position and this pale white dude voter for her in the primary – because she is good. I have zero doubt that she could and would make a great president, better than a number that I’ve lived my many decades under. Why? Because she is smart, she is understanding, she is a good politician, she wants what’s best for the country and humanity. We are a diverse nation, hell many nations are diverse, but I believe that we are one of the most diverse, which is a great and amazing thing. I’m an old and I live in a senior’s appt complex, one must be over 55 to live here. There are 144 units and for many of my neighbors, english is a second language, the skin colors range from just slightly lighter than  the white color of the screen I’m typing on – which is as white as it gets, to as dark as the type on the screen. And everything in between. Along with being from many states and foreign countries. It’s like the united nations of old farts. And it’s far better for it. I’ve traveled from the north of Norway to the southern tip of New Zealand, from Hawaii to Europe, been to Cuba, lived on both coasts of this country and traveled to Mexico and Canada and 46 of the states. I’ve heard so many languages spoken I’ve long ago lost count and the not so funny thing is, we are all human beings. This is a great country and a lot of that is because of its diversity. Hell we type and read this blog, with people from all walks of life, of many, I imagine, differing religions – from none to whatever, of many different shades of skin color and likely differing languages and we are all human beings. And we should never forget that.

    The quality of mercy is not strained;
    It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
    Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
    It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
    ‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
    The throned monarch better than his crown:
    His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
    The attribute to awe and majesty,
    Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
    But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
    It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings,
    It is an attribute to God himself;
    And earthly power doth then show likest God’s
    When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
    Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
    That, in the course of justice, none of us
    Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
    And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
    The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much

    It’s humanity, not one of us is perfect, because perfect is impossible. What’s perfect for you won’t be for others – and vise versa. So many want to have the world, or at least their world, absolutely perfect. But first, that’s impossible. Second, it then wouldn’t be perfect for others. Third there are people like DT and there is nothing, no way, impossible for him to even be in the same room with anything approaching perfect, because he infects everything around him.
