I couldn’t take another day of the media’s freakout about Biden’s age so I did a no news day today. Checked no newspapers, barely glanced at twitter, etc. I just can’t with the age stuff- not only did they do the same fucking thing to Hillary in 2016 when she got a cold, but Biden is fucking 81. This didn’t sneak up on us. We had 81 years notice. The notion that is NOW a couple weeks before the election something that should surprise and worry us is infuriating and transparent in its goals.
Had a dentists appointment today, and all is well. Some mild gum issues, but I was assured completely normal and age related. I asked her “Do you think my teeth will last another thirty years?” and she looked at me funny and said they should, and I told her we shouldn’t have a problem then because I won’t.
Had an eye doctor appointment and need new computer glasses and everyday glasses, but that will have to wait until the fall when I start getting paid again. Kinda miffed about it because for once the ones I have are not too terribly beat up.
I don’t really have anything to say that hasn’t been said better either here or elsewhere, so that is about it for me. This is going to be the first 4th of July where fireworks will not be upsetting my dogs. Well, I won’t be around them, at any rate.

Congrats on your teeth. I’m sitting here with temporary crowns on my two front teeth (the ones in the Christmas song). It was weird having them ground down, let me tell you.
Permanent crowns should be ready in a couple of weeks now. I don’t know how many more crowns I’m going to need before I kick it. I think about a quarter of my teeth are now crowned.
Eta I’m done talking about Biden’s age, either here or in meatspace.

It’s not your teeth you have to worry about, it’s your gums and the connective tissue that holds your teeth in your jaw. It’s possible to lose perfectly good teeth to gum disease, though a good periodontist can often reverse the worst effects of gum disease. For a small fortune. For one example, my gum graft surgery was $6,000.
I am purposefully not returning phone calls from two people having conniptions about Biden’s debate performance. Maybe that is wrong of me as a patriotic citizen but I have very little bandwidth at the moment for other people’s craziness.

Whatever Biden and the D party are going to do, stick with Biden or replace him, they need to make a prompt decision within the next week or so and stick firmly on whichever horse is to be ridden going forward. And whichever way that is, doubting Thomases need to STFU and get to work supporting the choice. Save recriminations for post-election if it turns out we rode the wrong horse.
To mix metaphors, we have to go “all in” on whichever hand of cards we are dealt by that decision – without useless tells of doubt on our faces.

I see that abortion rights made the ballot in Florida. Judging from what we’ve seen in other states, this should give a boost to women registering, and to Democrats come November.
Simply put, Trump has NO path to victory without Florida. At minimum, what passes for Trump campaign managers, if they are as competent as reputed, have to be going into massive recovery mode there. All those resources, no longer going to places like Wisconsin or Pennsylvania.

The dilemma that John brought to mind, with his appointment with his dentist and reflections on Dear Old Joe and where we might be, (that is the question) brought to mind what Shakespeare writes most eloquently from ‘As You Like It’, spoken by Jaques.
‘Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.’

SCOTUS’s sabotage of the US polity has been far beyond the executive immunity & Chevron deference decisions (click through the link for exerts of the decision):
The impact will be far beyond just the EPA. The reactionary majority on SCOTUS, through a series of activist decisions, is trying to dismantle the administrative & regulatory state that forms a part of the bedrock for modern civilization. Maybe the reactionaries do not want to quite as far as to abolish the 20th century, but certainly wants to rewind the clock to before 1960.
If the reactionaries are allowed to seize all branches of power (not just in the coming election), by 2040 the US may have the politics of Fascist Italy, the environment of 2000s China, & the economic structure of modern India (minus any dynamism). But the current capital owners will live uninhibited like lords & monarchs.

I have been and AM a huge Biden supporter. I don’t live in a bubble, though. I have no answers, but I am very realistic about how bad Biden’s debate performance was. Very jarring. There will continue to be huge fall out. Biden’s health and mental capacity will lead the news every night. I hope I am wrong.
I know one thing….I don’t like being in the position that I (as a huge supporter of Biden) will be holding my breath every time MY candidate answers a question, gives a speech, does a townhall, or walks from point A to point B. Right now, I have a very uneasy feeling about his upcoming interview with George Stephanopoulos.
I am not a troll. I am a lifelong Dem with deep family roots in the party going way back. If I am holding my breath every time MY president speaks….there’s a problem.

People on here react very strongly when a nym they don’t recognize voices a differing opinion. This is getting really silly.
If we were to reach the point where Biden was to seriously consider stepping aside, what happens? Do you or I get asked for input? Obviously not. Does the political commentariate get asked for input? Likewise no. Who does get a say? Biden himself. Harris. Who gets asked for an opinion? Dr Biden. Obama. Pelosi. Possibly Jeffries. Maybe Jeff Zients. That’s about it.
For obvious financial reasons, not to mention political ones, Harris has to be the alternative. Who else gets put on the ticket? Her choice. Nobody else’s — although she would likely ask for input from a very small group, including zero of those currently opining on the subject.
In short, what we are seeing is, to be kind, “intellectual”** masturbation. Nothing else.

In the wake of the SCOTUS rulings, I can’t believe we, & more importantly Dem grandees, are still arguing over whether Biden should drop out. Whether you think the chances of defeating Trump is endangered either by Biden staying or leaving, perhaps the better use of your energy is to convince the voters yet not committed to the Dems on the dangers posed by Trump, the Heritage Project 2025 agenda, & the reactionary SCOTUS, & get them to commit to vote against Trump, by voting for whoever the D nominee is. After all, the basis for the concerns & fears associated Biden staying or leaving is its impact on non-D committed voters, right? In that case, do our best to make the election about Trump, who is no longer new on the political stage, rather than exclusively about Biden. No one here can influence Biden’s decision, anyway.
Also, perhaps focus your energies to help the down ballot Ds. Even if Trump wins, Ds holding at least one chamber of Congress, & more of the states & municipalities, may be able to serve at least as a speed bump against the Project 2025 agenda, & base areas for resistance. To that end, mobilize & turn out the D committed voters.
BarcaChicago

I finally came to a point where I see some very dark humor in this whole affair when I began to notice that
For some really dark comic relief around this dark subject, check out the Trumpists who are convinced this is all some kind of conspiracy to…somehow cheat them out of… something. Basically they can’t quite figure out a full theory, or even half of one, but it’s hilarious, they really do think that somehow some shadowy forces are at work with some double-reverse.
I guess it’s less hilarious when I consider that our side has a kind of light conspiracy theory running too, this “msm is creating it because they hate dems.” Or the weird “Biden is old because Kamala is black” which is making the rounds.
Politics really are a total shambles. Two candidates each of whom at least half the populace considers unfit to serve. That’s a sick democracy. Interesting times.
YY_Sima Qian
@Bupalos: At this point, I am more concerned about SCOTUS. Voters can’t recall or remove the judges. We have to wait for them to die, or resign (& the reactionaries won’t resign). I am not sure enough of the Dems in the Senate have the determination to pack the courts even if they retain the majority & Biden wins, given FDR’s precedent.
Unless we get more judges in, the SCOTUS will be a millstone around the country’s neck for decades to come.
gwangung
@YY_Sima Qian: They’ll drown themselves in the caseload and refuse to consider any expansion in the court as lawful.
YY_Sima Qian
@gwangung: They (& the reactionaries in the lower courts) will pick & choose the cases that undermine governance further, to reduce the “burdens” on the plutocrats, theocrats, & the privileged, back to the “golden age” of the 1950s, only w/ even much lower taxes on the rich.

@YY_Sima Qian: I think they are aiming for the 1920’s, or for some of the judges, the 1850’s. The 1950’s are way too progressive for this lot (there was plenty of regulation in the Eisenhower years).
Jay
@YY_Sima Qian:
And at the same time, on the other side, lawsuits will fly to sane judges, who will rule sanely based on expert opinion.
Yes, those will get appealed eventually, to the Star Chamber Court, but there will be a lot of them.
And Corporate America will start to realize that they need to work in a rules based system.
David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch
@YY_Sima Qian: How would that work as a long term solution?
right now it’s 6 to 3. you would need to add 4 to make it 7 to 6.
but at some point you get a republican senate and president and they’ll add 2 to make it 8 to 7 and then they would reverse all cases.
at best, packing would only provide a 4 to 8 year respite, then you’re back to square one.
Odie Hugh Manatee
@rikyrah:
Hillary was old in 2016. Biden was old in 2020 and now for some strange reason he’s even older in 2024! When trouble arises for the party and their candidate, Republicans circle the wagons with their guns pointing outward. Democrats also circle the wagons and point their guns, but inward at each other and their candidates.
Republicans fight like hell but when it’s time they know what to do to win. Democrats? Not so much since they are too busy kneecapping each other to think about actually winning. Hell, if Biden bowed out to Mr. Whitey Perfect right now and then that person lost, they would only continue to blame Biden for not bowing out sooner.
They are always right. Emphasis on “right”.

I’ve been following the UK election. Labour’s got a pretty good ad that’s titled ‘Don’t forget’ which goes through several Tory scandals- partygate, pay to play PPE contracts making $$$, neglecting the NHS and public infrastructure etc. I think the Biden people should do something similar and not just the stupid TFG clown stuff. Serious stuff he did that caused damage.

@Scout211:
latest polling for Biden from Ipsos/Reuters has him in a dead heat too: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/2024/national/
It shows the Ipsos polling of other prominent Dems vs Trump. Apart from Michelle Obama everyone else does worse than Biden.
Unless the internal polls are vastly different, Biden will rightfully laugh off any claims he needs to step down. Even the Australian PM wouldn’t get knifed in those circumstances, and challenging for the top job is pretty common here.

@David 🌈 ☘The Establishment☘🌈 Koch: Electing Biden in Nov. is a rear guard action, packing the courts is a stop gap, all to give efforts w/in the Constitutional order to defeat the Herrenvolk reactionary forces a chance to succeed. These efforts involve electing more and better Ds, & hold those elected Ds to account to dismantle the structural advantages the reactionary forces have built up over the decades (gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc.) in states & municipalities & the tools they have abused to advance their causes (filibuster, holds on appointments, etc.), given the elected Ds political cover & political pressure, allow the shifting demographics & social values to eventually take their effect.
If the rear guard action fails, the dip gap measure fails, then there may no longer be opportunities for w/in the Constitutional order remedies to work, & then its civil war & counter-counterrevolution, or a long darkness followed by revolution & civil war. It might still come to violence, even if the rear guard action succeeds, the stop gap measures work, & the long term efforts & trends progress, if the reactionaries refuse to retire quietly into eventual irrelevance (as they refused to in 1861).

This is the same.

Really? Seriously? Because the thing is, they would be right. Maybe they’re seeing the signs.
Trump would be quite happy to cheat them out of the theocracy. He’s as religious as a rabid rat, a real hold-the-bible-upside-down contemptuous bastard, best candidate for literal Antichrist I’ve ever seen. He absolutely would cheat them out of their religious fantasies, he just wants to BE God.
The Russians who have been carrying them this whole time are not seeking power for them. It’s absolutely a trap. In no way is it to make Republicans powerful and secure, masters of their domain. It’s always been to split America in civil war and if they had to, they would literally pay Democrats and give them guns to fight the Republicans. There is no path to a peaceful Republican-owned country, even if they did everything right, because the very people who have been setting them up with a pet demagogue and supporting that guy, are the people whose REAL and only goal is internal war.
If Trumpists smell a rat, well, they’re closer to it. Good for them. They’re right. They’re walking into a trap.
