Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Come on, man.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

So many bastards, so little time.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Books are my comfort food!

Good sign for our side:

PELOSI: "Hakeem Jeffries will be the speaker of the House. I don't know what the margin will be, but I know that we have the votes to win the House."

— Ryan Struyk (@ryanstruyk) November 5, 2024

Consider this as confirmation Democrats have won the House. Hakeem Jeffries is the next Speaker Of The House. [And Mike Johnson will probably be tossed out & they’ll likely have an even more extreme minority leader.] https://t.co/r8yk7ef6gA

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) November 5, 2024

Looking at midday turnout numbers and, even in non-battleground states, tracking towards a turnout that is going to come very close to the historic record set in 2020. This is not a repeat of 2016, by any measure.

— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) November 5, 2024

Don't count your chickens before they hatch, but I hear the hens are breaking for Harris

— Greg Dworkin (@DemFromCT) November 5, 2024

"I'm looking at you and you're looking at me? Oh, there's a live camera somewhere. Which camera — this is? — OK, I'm waving at you."

— Howard Mortman (@HowardMortman) November 5, 2024

You need to take exit polls with a heaping of salt but it's insane how every piece of information I'm getting is terrible for Trump

This is fucking awful. Black/Latino near the margin of error but whites down 8 favorability from 2020? This is how Selzer winds up right about Iowa pic.twitter.com/UBjFYYpyNA

Meanwhile, the Disloyal Opposition is already melting down:

they're calling it the Cybertruck of GOTV operations https://t.co/8bHaBvHdwm

He deleted it. So, for posterity: pic.twitter.com/J6AGsrEfbT

Reporters from Politico, Puck, and Axios get the ax from Trump's Election Night event over critical coverage: https://t.co/sLXYDrPaGn

— Charlotte Klein (@charlottetklein) November 5, 2024

From the Bushes and Romneys to the retired 4-stars to the most trollish anti-anti-Trump data guys, moral tests don’t come when they’re comfortable or you want them, and you don’t get do-overs. Yours has passed you by now, but in the end that’s okay, we’ll do it without you.

While we eagerly/dreadfully await the results, I think below is a good assessment of where the US is as a polity (emphasis mine):

    Robert E Kelly
    @Robert_E_Kelly

    Final Thread on the Election

    1. Prediction: Harris will win bc of an enormous gender gap due to Dobbs & the generalized air of misogyny around the late Trump campaign

    2. The failure of US elite institutions to keep T out of politics has been shocking & systemic: the press, Congressional Republicans, the courts, the biz community, conservatives on SCOTUS. America is far more vulnerable to an Orbanist, semi-authoritarian takeover than we thought.

    3. That elite failure reflects our staggering public failure. It is shocking that so many Americans want Trump back in power. This campaign is ending w/ a nat’l debate on whether T is a fascist (!!), yet he will still take at least 46% of the vote. 1/3 of Americans have fallen into what’s basically a cult, and it’s not clear how to pull them out. The rest of T’s voters seem unmoved by the endless drumbeat of T scandal and misbehavior, which is similarly inexplicable given the comparatively minor scandals which previously brought down US politicians.

    4. The Electoral College has become a threat to US political stability. The EC’s ability to let a candidate lose but still win is the obvious reason to eliminate it, but almost as bad is how it permits the GOP to avoid electoral pressure to mature & moderate. The GOP cannot win a majority of US voters in a straight race anymore. That has been the case for almost 20 years. The pressure of regular defeat wd encourage moderation, but the EC blunts that, keeping the GOP more radicalized than it wd otherwise be.

    5. Right-wing media has become a massively toxic force in America. The right’s ‘hack gap’ is no insight at this point, but a left-wing version of T (RFK, Jr.) is almost impossible given the less coordinated, more intellectually honest punditry on the left. RW media, by contrast, is lost in wild conspiracy theories and grifting, which perfectly fits T’s own ‘paranoid style.’

    6. Trumpists have created a fantasy version of the US left as a massive, powerful nat’l threat (antifa!) to justify radical, ‘postliberal’ action. Trumpist extremism (the ‘Flight 93 election,’ Jan 6) is ostensibly necessary, bc woke liberals dominate American institutions – Hollywood, the media, academia and so on. But conservatives dominate other institutions – overrepresentation in the Senate, EC, & SCOTUS; gerrymandered state assemblies; the biz community; a huge, highly coordinated media & entertainment universe; a large network of churches & home-schooling. It’s hardly as dire Trumpists say

    7. Trump will not fade away. People keep saying this is T’s last election, but I don’t buy it. He will dominate the GOP until his death, if only for the grift & to try to stay out of prison by claiming he is the leader of a major US political movement. And if T is is even reasonably coherent in 2028 (& not in jail), he will run again

    8. Trump will die eventually, but Trumpism will not. Obviously T himself will pass, but he has so re-made the GOP in his own image that a trumpized GOP will persist. A lot of conservatives want to pretend that the GOP’s trumpist turn is a one-off, traceable to T alone, & that the Reaganite GOP will return when T is gone. This is highly unlikely. T is the apotheosis of RW media trends going back to Limbaugh at least. He is what the GOP base has been groomed to want for decades now. The trends which created T won’t go away w/ his death. Another, likely Vance, will pick up the trumpist mantle. Trumpism will be with us for decades

NB: I worked the GOP back in the day. Please don’t tell me that I am just another liberal academic saying all this

I’m winding yarn, organizing my yarn stash.  Listening to podcasts on Jane Austen novels.

This afternoon, got an urgent call because two folks had shown up to vote at the nearest polling station, one they could walk to, only to be told that they had to vote at one that was an hour’s walk away.  They don’t have a car.  So I picked them up and took them to the other place.  On the way, I realized that they both have some learning disabilities.  But they talked about what they wanted for their country and were clear about who they wanted as a leader.  Someone nice, not mean.  They both have jobs and pay taxes.  They asked if I could help them with their ballots and I agreed , with an okay from the poll workers.  I knew the regs on it as my husband, a poll worker elsewhere had been reviewing them yesterday. A disabled person can request help.

I did not tell them how to vote, but helped them with instructions and told them they could leave some blank. If they wanted.  They were so happy to have voted.  They made more intelligent choices than a lot of my fellow Americans are making today.  Then I took them home, just as a cold rain was starting.

He only got 11%, but if there are enough white Mississippians who have had enough of the Talibangelicals, it’s not impossible for Kamala to pull off a miracle. But it would take a miracle.

Not sure Trump dead-enders are a bad thing. They’ll last longer than W’s did, but nobody remembers him now. I think a generation is going to die out and drag the Republican primaries down. It will be a Jan. 6th crowd with walkers. That will be bad for those in red districts, but a lot of purples could get bluer.

At the POTUS level, I think we’re in for more Perot/Nader/RFK Jr. types. Pseudo-populists who want to spoil it. They will be the problem.

I don’t think we learned nearly as much about right wing media toxicity as we have about mainstream media toxicity. We now know that even in the face of actual-factual fascism, the MSM will never, ever, dump its commitment to a “both sides do it but liberals are worse” worldview, that it will in some cases bend over even further to accommodate the fascist than it ever would have a regular Republican, and work harder than it ever has before to undermine Democratic presidents, and that since the only alternative to it is the Newscorpverse. And since the public still hasn’t woken up to that reality like they finally have for, say, the courts, their ability to sow chaos in the cause of fascism is enormous.

But we always knew it was going to be a knife fight. We always knew it would be hard. Breathe. If you need to, step away. Marshall your strength and be patient.

We have done what we can. The rest is yet to be seen.

If there’s a problem with understanding a post, I’m likely to have it. (‘Tis the cursed “editor’s eye.”) Yours was perfectly understandable. You can, I think, safely ignore the person with the not-hitherto-seen-here-(at-least-by-me)-nym. The other responses indicate that the regulars have your back. Also, you made a good point. (Although I’m having a little trouble getting the “alternating nuts swinging” image out of my brain.)

I am pretty much done with the South/NC myself. Sold my Eastern NC farm land that had been in my family since late 1700’s in August. Oddly, I sold it to a family from Idaho. Trumpers. Thought I would feel funny about it. Haven’t looked back.

@Citizen Alan: one of the things that helps is that PA doesn’t tax my retirement/disability income. SC won’t tax the first $10k, but then factor in everything else, including house prices have nearly tripled, and just… no. PA has so much natural beauty, and great little towns, we’re not far from Philly, close to NYC and other good places, and there’s just no reason to look south. On top of climate change making the South even more unbearable.

But my parents were born, and will die, there. We’ve all made our piece with it, and I know where all the important documents are. So…

@WaterGirl: Yes, Ben Cardin is retiring and Alsobrooks will take his place. At age 52, she happens to be 28 years younger than Cardin. Andy Kim, Elissa Slotkin and Lisa Blunt Rochester are also much younger than the Senators they will replace..

Angela Alsobrooks will bring valuable experience to the Senate. She’s been County Executive of Prince George’s County for 6 years now, managing a county of over 900,000 people. Before that, Alsobrooks served two terms as county prosecutor. Those are challenging jobs and I expect she learned a lot workng them.

    @Citizen Alan

The citizens of the cotton States, as a whole, are poor. They work little, and that little, badly; they earn little, they sell little; they buy little, and they have little – very little – of the common comforts and consolations of civilized life. Their destitution is not material only; it is intellectual and it is moral … They were neither generous nor hospitable and their talk was not that of evenly courageous men.

    Alsobrooks wins

Thank goodness! Much relieved. There was some organization running truly horrific ads against her. (On the other hand, Trump helped on the side of the good guys, for once, by endorsing Hogan, which Hogan emphatically DID NOT WANT. But it allowed MD Dems to put up billboards announcing “Trump Endorsed Hogan.” So, uh, thanks, Donald?)
