On three separate occasions this evening I went to put up a Golden Globes open thread and I forgot each time. Until now, as they are ending.
Super happy Hacks won. And I really enjoyed Shogun.

That’s OK, we were busy discussing race in children’s books. Very informative Sunday night. Thanks for the porch where we can all sit and chat!

Justin Trudeau is supposed to be resigning this week so a start to another shit week. I’m about to become one of those people I used to criticize who don’t pay attention to the news because it’s too damn depressing.

Just finished watching the Return of the King with our young adult children. All entranced, all crying at times. Then sent them out to romp in the new snow.
Good times!

I pulled a John Cole this afternoon. My friend and I managed to get my parents gigantic tree out of the house. Then I brought the tree stand out to empty the water and stepped in a huge crack in their walkway at the bottom of their front steps and rolled my foot. I can barely stand. Bad sprain of either ankle or foot. Back to school tomorrow on crutches. Joy. Off to bed. Also…..goddamn motherfucking bollocks.

I’m afraid I am already in that category. I continue to read this blog along with a few people on bluesky. Even that puts me in a dark, angry mood.

I’m bleh on showbiz awards. They’re just a circle jerk. And anyway I had to shake the crumbs out of my toaster tonight.
Eunicecycle
@Mai Naem mobile ¹: I just read that he’s resigning as head of his party, not as PM.

@Old Dan and Little Ann: ICE IS YOUR FRIEND
Kayla Rudbek
Mr. Rudbek fixed the upstairs bathroom vent fan, which involved bringing the ladder upstairs. Then he replaced the battery in the smoke detector, and dusted the inset cubbyholes above our bedroom closets. There was a lot of dust everywhere in the bathroom and the bedroom after that, so we dusted to the point where he could actually smell the difference.
Cathie from Canada
@Eunicecycle: same thing, in a parliamentary system. Whoever is selected by the Liberals as their leader becomes Prime Minister. I would be sad myself to see Trudeau resign but the Liberals are so far behind in the polls now that he really doesn’t have a choice. I just hope the Liberals can remain as the government under a new leader for the next six months, until the Foreign Interference report comes out and the popular social programs the Liberals introduced have time to work (dental care, pharmacare, school lunches, daycare, indigenous reconciliations) so that even if the Conservatives do win the 2025 election, they won’t be able to kibosh these programs.

@SpaceUnit: when i was single and lonely i made a point to defrost my freezer every new years eve. I had no party invitations and it felt useful to do such an adult thing. Maybe 3? 4? Years then i developed social skills.

Golden Globes, the red-headed stepchild of award shows.
Whiter than white foreigners of uncertain pedigree voting on American TV and film productions.

@Cathie from Canada:
So far, it’s just insider gossip, with the dates being “maybe” Monday, or Wednesday or Friday, or just soon.

@Trivia Man:
Not sure I grasp your point.

@John Cole: so yeah, i’m behind on half a dozen threads, but just popped in to this one to agree. holy shit, shogun was fucking amazing.

@Old Dan and Little Ann: @John Cole: Or frozen peas. Doctors recommend! Really! I read it on this here almost top 10,000 blog a couple of days ago.
Full service blog!
frosty
@Trivia Man: And now that you have social skills your freezer is a solid block of ice? There’s always a tradeoff, innit?
Cathie from Canada
@Jay: According to tweets, the Ottawa rumour mill says Trudeau will pull the plug on Monday. There is a special Liberal caucus meeting called for Wednesday, however, so maybe he will do it then instead.
I would doubt he will resign immediately plus call an immediate election, and I really hope he doesn’t do this — its not as though there is any imminent reason to leave right away, like a health issue or a scandal. The more common Canadian pattern would be for a current leader to announce a leadership contest for three or four months later, like in April or May, but with Trudeau staying as PM until then.

Lara Trump is currently on the job market.

So anyway I’m alive. I’ve been a slug most of the weekend except I did most of my dishes* and the laundry is complete. I’m now waiting for the melatonin to kick in before entering dreamland.
Has anyone placed a bet on how much Melania will demand for payment to show up for official White House events?
*forgot this:
Needed to cook up a chicken breast so I have a pair of tongs & the frypan to do yet.
Jay
@Yutsano:
One Billion Dollars seems to be the front runner.
Yutsano
@Jay: Heh. You, I, and the electrons know he doesn’t have that kind of money laying around. And even if he did he’d sue to not release it. She’s actually smarter than that. I’m thinking a million as a starting point.
Jay
@Yutsano:
That’s what Dr. Evil, ( you would think that most Doctorate programs would have better vetting, but nope) first asked for, until the other villains pointed out that, that a million dollars, wasn’t a lot of money anymore.
frosty
@Jay: Right. Three mill for a comfortable upper middle-class retirement. Which would be a hell of a downgrade for her, wouldn’t it?
I see stories about people stealing or embezzling or robbing for chump change. Even $250,000. Me? I wouldn’t have done any of that shit for less than 3MM.
Poe Larity.
IDK why people would be sad, that Trudeau guy was PM when the nuns were chasing me with yardsticks in to 70’s.
Guy had a better run than me.
Yutsano
@Poe Larity.: Because you know what you did. :P

So, late and all, I’d still like to express my appreciation for the FPs and the rest of the y’all (I,m from Central Texas y’all), for the fun and knowledge provided.

Blech (in memory of Ozark). Just flew back from a holiday in the US that had its ups (many good ones) and downs (a couple of serious ones). The last leg of my journey was from London to Athens in an Airbus A320 that had seats that didn’t even recline. I’m not talking the one or two inches that makes you ask “what the hell is this”, I’m talking about rigid seats. Four hours in one of those, and the only food they offered without demanding extra money was a packet of seasoned corn kernels and a small bottle of water.
Not even Ryanair. British Airways does this.
On the upside, I got bumped up a class on the BWI-Heathrow leg of the journey, both ways. That got me a lie-flat seat and a three-course meal.
But I’m still jet-lagged to hell and gone.
And @Old Dan and Little Ann and @frosty: Second the peas. My mom hurt her leg in a fall late last year and tried reusable gel icepacks, but found that a bag of frozen peas was actually more effective as an icepack. It conforms, it’s reusable (to an extent), and it just works.

@smike:
Oops, wrong thread.
Cathie from Canada
@Poe Larity.: Different Trudeaus.
The father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, was PM in the 70s and 80s. His son, Justin Trudeau, has been PM since 2015.

@Bruce K in ATH-GR:
Wow great bumps! The last time I flew internationally, I paid for B class, ATL to CDG. There is no going back.
Trivia Man
@SpaceUnit: it was as exciting as dumping the toaster crumbs. Which i sometimes did at the same time i was defrosting the freezer.
Trivia Man
@frosty: modern technology took that delightful chore from me. Although if we are using it a lot, and the weather has been humid, my chest freezer does ice up.
Chris T.
@eclare: Yeah I’ve flown both steerage and Business Class to/from Australia and NZ (LAX/AKL or SFO/SYD for example). Thirteen or so hours in the air, lie-flat sleeper seat is almost worth the price (which I didn’t pay directly, these were all air mile things).
Well, then then-price, which was like $4k maybe? I remember it went up to $8k, not sure what it is now.
Sonora
@Chris T.: Taking the LAX-Sydney route today. Biz class upgrade quoted at $9400. Alas, I’m not worth $600+ an hour for a flat bed.
I’m planning to rue this decision around flight hour 8 of 15. G’day!
