Scott’s comment about the meetup:
I’m still heartened at the turnout despite three last minute cancellations (sick) and a 4th who didn’t get back into town in time.
My wife thoroughly enjoyed herself because of all the stimulating conversational topics, this wasn’t just a bunch of white Democrats of a certain demographic kvetching about politics. Highlights for me were decidedly different, namely talking Nick Tahou’s with you and Todd (Mountain Boy), talking about the neighborhood 30 years back with Charlie (Snarlymon) and me discovering that Mike (Bokonon) is on the Denver FUGLY Facebook group and familiar with my copious work there.
We had three additional people, my wife, Baquist’s husband and a friend of Madame Bupkis who’s apparently already signed up on BJ with the handle Cupcake.
Everybody agreed this was the way to host one of these as opposed to meeting somewhere public. Even in our very modest “City Cottage”, we had plenty of room thus could mill about smartly which greatly contributes to stimulating conversation, no overwhelming noise from others and everybody could eat and drink to their heart’s content.
To quote Lisa (Sure Lurkalot) from an email she sent afterwards:
“…it was a sight to behold a bunch of virtual strangers laughing and talking about all manner of things.”
Scott’s thinking about another meetup when the weather is a little better and it can be hosted outside. Thanks again to Scott and his wife for hosting, and to all who attended.

Lovely photo, ya jackals!

Shiny, happy people!

Looks great! You got a front-pager!
Marmot
Very nice
Kristine
Wow—big group!
Great idea to meet at a home.
pieceofpeace
It’s good to see so many at that very fun-looking event, and cheers to the capable and generous hosts.
Baud
@Kristine:
My thought too. Huge.
UncleEbeneezer
Good times! Hopefully no chairs were thrown. Next time I plan to be in Denver I’ll put out word in advance so that maybe another could be coordinated for when I’m there (usually once a year around holiday time). Hope you all had fun. We need to do one again here in LA. Did one years ago (2017 I think) and it was a good time.
rikyrah
Good Looking group :)
Scamp Dog
I had a great time, and hope we can do it again before too long!
CaseyL
Terrific meetup! It’s always nice to have faces to put to names. Thanks for sharing!
Baud
I have to say, Comrade Scott doesn’t look very rageful.
JPL
It appears that a good time was had by all, and let me add that I’m green with envy.
kalakal
Looks great! Huge group
p.a.
Lots of folks!

Looks like it was a great time! Dunno my later winter and early spring plans vis. Dillon, CO, where I am now for snowboarding, but maybe I could make the outdoor event if the timing is just right.
Miss Bianca
I plan to be coming up to Denver at some point (March, maybe?) for concerts and perhaps a spot of play-going, so I will put the word out on the bat phone when that happens. Greetings, fellow

@Baud: Y’know – and this may shock you – in person I don’t look like a ladylike white mouse, either. :)
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@Baud:
I save it to channel in here and against the developer class and their legions of white minions/shills here in Denver.
We joked that this wasn’t as much a “Denver Meetup” and “The Lurkers Meetup.”
I’d met Scamp Dog in 2019 at our 3-person “meetup”. I’ve gotten to know Sure Lurkalot over the last year. It turns out we go waaaaay back together by our association (separated by a few years) with a former Classics prof at CU-Boulder in the late-70s/early-80s. Brilliant lecturer who was also a total RWNJ. Small, small world.
I hope everybody follows the photo link and see the beer cans in the sink–I staged that deliberately. I made sure Quinerly was here in spirit. Get it, spirit? I’m here all week. :)
Anyway
yeah and Snarlymon is smiling – what’s up with that!?
Nice turnout!
KatKapCC
Looks like a good time!

Ohio Mom
I always enjoy having faces to put with the nyms. Such big smiles, too — everyone is enjoying themselves, looks like it was a memorable event.
Now I am wondering if we have any Juicers who live in Central Ohio, instead of looking for a Columbus restaurant we could meet at.
Old School
Nice! You all look exactly as I’d pictured you.
KatKapCC
@Old School: I don’t know why, but I always pictured Starfish as having curly red hair. Maybe because “starfish” makes me think of mermaids and then I think of Ariel?
Belafon
@Ohio Mom: I want to set something similar up here in the DFW area sometime.
TF79
Looks fun! Wish I could have made it back to town in time (though I would have lowered the average age by quite a bit :) )
mvr
Thanks for hosting this, Scott! I really enjoyed the event and meeting people. I also enjoyed seeing your old house and your work on it.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
Another great aspect of this was that people traveled: Colorado Springs, Buena Vista and Lincoln NE!
And I was concerned about timing it to minimize Denver/Boulder travel hassles for folks.
@Belafon:
At the risk of sounding too trite, just do it. Pick a date, I deliberately picked one just over 4 weeks out so as to give people enough lead time to schedule. As I said in the original post, free food and booze are always a draw. :)
@mvr:
You are so welcome. Sandra really enjoyed talking with you and we really enjoy showing off our last historical, home renovation project. Next time I’ll take everybody down into the basement and show off the rebuilt brick wall I did brick-by-brick.
PIGL
mistermix! So nice to put a face to the name. I miss your musical recs from the old days.
mvr
Oh that really is an accomplishment. I would have liked to see that!

That looks amazing!

Then click on the left arrow to scroll back thru the work as it progressed.
Pro tip everybody: masons are worth every dime they charge…assuming you can get one to do a small job. That’s why I taught myself how to lay brick. I reused the old brick and learned that the old brick fired in 1905 was larger than modern brick. Ran out on the top row and had to improvise.
All those youtube videos with guys laying a line of brick in 10 seconds, heh heh, lies, all lies…or done by professional masons. I did each of these one-by-one over the course of a month, finishing up right before the pandemic hit.
And I haven’t even shown all the before/after photos of the original garage. We paid a pro to do that early on.

@comrade scotts agenda of rage:
I had a mason friend teach me to tile and lay brick. great skill to have

Looks like a good time. Wish I could have made it.
Warren Senders
I would love to be part of a Boston meetup.
mvr
Nicely done wall there! It came out well.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@mvr:
I learned that a) I can do just about anything after all these years of hands on, historic preservation work, and b) if I had to start as a mason tomorrow, I’d starve.
Thanks.
Snarlymon
@Anyway: I’m smiling because at my age I’m happy to have teeth.
