Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Republicans in disarray!

Accountability, motherfuckers.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Trump: So what they are trying to do with the Epstein hoax is get people to talk about that instead of speaking about the tremendous success like ending seven wars

— Acyn (@acyn.bsky.social) September 3, 2025 at 11:56 AM

Narrator: Trump didn’t end seven wars.

I’ll spare you further clips of the mush-mouthed sleazebag, but here are some other whiny quotes from the same exchange:

This is a Democrat hoax. They’re trying to get people to talk about something that is totally irrelevant.

We are having the most successful eight months of any president ever. And that’s what I want to talk about. That’s what we should be talking about. Not the Epstein hoax.

I understand that we were subpoenaed to give files and I understand we have given thousands of pages of files. I think it’s enough because I think we should talk about the success that we are having.

Trump is deeply unpopular, and he’s trying to make a pedophilia scandal involving his close personal friend go away by calling it a “Democrat hoax” and whining about how he’s not getting enough credit for nonexistent accomplishments.

Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I don’t think this will have the intended effect.

I was hearing on a podcast that Lutnick’s company which is controlled by his sons is buying up these financial instruments en masse that are the legal rights to credits that the government will have to pay companies if the tariffs are overturned in the courts. Incredible corruption.

@eclare: One of the wars Trump claims he ended was India-Pakistan.  He told Modi this during a meeting recently and Modi basically responded to his face, “the fuck you did.  you had nothing to do with it.”

Edit: that exchange is part of why Trump announced tariffs against India, and Modi is meeting with Putin and Xi this week.

Anything else would be tacit recognition that you’ve been in a crazy cult all this time.  What’s totally bizarre, and kind of plot-device cool, is that the leader of the cult turns out to be the great satan.  It’s like these fools have never seen a movie.

There was another temporary cessation of hostilities, between Thailand and Cambodia, where we. threatened to increase tariffs if they didn’t agree, and are taking credit for an agreement negotiated elsewhere.

There are two disputes where we helped the parties that didn’t involve any warfare at the time (Egypt-Ethiopia and Serbia Kosovo)

      There’s also the cease-fire between the US, Israel and Iran, which stopped fighting that had been commenced by Israel and the US;

so those are 5 out of the seven wars that Trump claims credit for having stopped…..

      FAKE NEWS! FAKE NEWS!!!

      The AP is reporting:

A confidential report by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog circulated to member states said Wednesday that Iran increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels before Israel launched its military attack on June 13.

The report by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said that as of June 13, Iran had 440.9 kilograms (972 pounds) of uranium enriched up to 60%, an increase of 32.3 kilograms (71.2 pounds) since the IAEA’s last report in May.

The report stated that this figure is “based on the information provided by Iran, agency verification activities between 17 May 2025 and 12 June 2025 (the day preceding the start of the military attacks), and estimates based on the past operation of the relevant facilities.”

That material is a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.

According to the IAEA, approximately 42 kilograms of 60% enriched uranium is theoretically enough to produce one atomic bomb, if enriched further to 90%.

Funny. I watched the conference on MSNBC and only heard a couple of jets whose noise was audible for just a few secs. The speakers were only momentarily silenced and continued on unfazed.

@Nukular Biskits: Chattanooga, TN, is a lovely city with many amenities. There’s the Bluff View Arts District, which is anchored by the Hunter Museum. There are excellent restaurants. There is the history of the Civil War in the park on Lookout Mountain and elsewhere. There is the natural beauty of the area and the opportunity to venture forth into nature in the State Park system.

I see that Florida is about to end all vaccine mandates for schoolchildren.  Same day that it’s announced that California, Oregon, and Washington are forming a “West Coast Health Alliance” to make sure that vaccines are widely available in those states.

I would have thought the U.S. would break up over guns, or abortion.  But vaccines?

Anyway…the blue states are going to have a field day recruiting red-state refugees in every high-need field for the next couple of years, methinks.

The two countries had pretty much worked out a peace treaty already when Trump invited the two leaders to the White House to sign a memorandum stating the terms agreed upon thus far. Both Armenian PM Pashinyin and Azerbaijan President Aliyev made the most of this brown-nosing opportunity.

It’s on the beautiful fresh water spring where they filmed “Creature From the Black Lagoon” in the 1950s. The 1930s-era hotel has got a real Old Florida feel. The rooms are spacious, and some overlook the spring, where it’s a lot of fun to swim. They have boat rides on the river where you can see lots of cool birds and other critters. There’s an onsite restaurant that’s pretty good and an old-fashioned soda fountain. St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is nearby. Very cool if you want to lose yourself in nature.

MTG  was just whole heartedly supportive. Praised the survivors.

My sister, who is represented by her in Congress, was so stunned she phoned and praised her courage.

      Marge just spoke with Manu.

“On WH criticism that signing onto Massie bill is a ‘hostile act:’ “The hostile act has been against these women for so many years now'”

Says if the Survivors give her a list, she’ll read it on the floor of Congress.

BREAKING: Advisers to President Trump have discussed the possibility of giving Mayor Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa positions in the admin to clear the field and damage the chances of Zohran Mamdani

Republicans will have to wear maga thick blinders in order to pretend they don’t see how blatantly their Dear Leader is openly cheating to skew elections to his benefit.

Another plus to donning maga thick blinders is not having to face themselves in the mirror.

White House officials frantically polishing a turd:

Don’t call it the One Big Beautiful Bill.

Three top officials from President Trump’s 2024 campaign urged Republican lawmakers on Tuesday morning to move away from the president’s chosen moniker for his signature domestic policy legislation and instead rebrand it as a boost for ordinary Americans.

In a closed-door briefing called to discuss midterm congressional campaign strategy, the officials encouraged lawmakers to refer to the measure as the “Working Families Tax Cut Bill” or the “Working Families Tax Plan,” according to members who attended.

The attempt to relabel Mr. Trump’s top legislative achievement was an implicit acknowledgment that the law is deeply unpopular, with its sweeping cuts to Medicaid and social safety net programs, as well as changes to the Affordable Care Act. Those polices are now threatening Republicans’ chances of maintaining control of the House. More than 64 percent of voters view the legislation unfavorably, according to recent polling.

My shitty GOP rep (Bilirakis) is flat-out lying to constituents to try to sell that turd of a law. They’ll all have to lie because it’s indefensible to shred the safety net so Musk and other centi-billionaires can buy half a dozen more yachts.

@Paul in KY: The actual Fort Pickens is a big brick fort constructed in the 1830s. It’s 8 miles from the park entrance, so there’s a lot of beach on the Gulf side and Bay side. There’s good walking, good bicycling, and also a small fishing pier on the Bay that does not require a state license. The park admission fee covers it.

There are a lot of fortifications built between WWI and WWIi; big casements for 10 inch guns and smaller structures as well.. One of my campsites had its own concrete pill box with flowers growng out of it.

A politician hiding something makes people suspect there is something serious to hide.  If he is just mentioned as a dinner guest where no untoward activity occurred, just show us.  At this point just about anything among consenting adults would be better than what many of us are thinking.  The more Trump fights disclosure the more it looks like guilt by association may be real guilt too.
