Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

In after Baud. Damn.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Sen. Mike Crapo, a Republican from Idaho who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, just refused to swear in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. which would have put his testimony to the Senate under oath.

— Aaron Fritschner (@fritschner.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:20 AM

===

Wyden on RFK Jr: "This committee's unwillingness to swear in this witness is basically a message that it is acceptable to lie to the Senate Finance Committee about hugely important questions like vaccines."

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) September 4, 2025 at 10:24 AM

Epidemiologist Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD has been doing a comprehensive live thread:

Sen Crapo (R, Gilead) leads off by alleging that this is the first time that HHS has focused on chronic disease, which is an outrageously incorrect claim.
He then claims that Medicaid has been preserved through the Big Beautiful Bill, which is an egregious mischaracterization.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:10 AM

===

Sen Wyden (D, OR) says that RFK Jr. is on an “unceasing crusade against vaccines”, and that RFK Jr.’s primary goal is to “take vaccines away from Americans”.
This is correct.
He also highlights RFK Jr.’s corruption in that he makes money from undermining vaccines.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:14 AM

===

RFK Jr. claims that the recent departures of CDC leaders was a needed “readjustment” due to their work to mitigate the pandemic (it was actually as successful as it could have been while people like RFK Jr. sowed misinformation).
He says that the CDC failed to do anything to stop the pandemic.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:29 AM

===

Most poor health outcomes in this country are linked to poverty and being unable to afford health care and the falling standards of maternal health care in very red states.
We are pretty obese tho, but not no. 1

Wyden asks about RFK Jr. installing quacks on ACIP.
RFK Jr. says that the American Academy of Pediatrics is “gravely conflicted”.
He then says he “depoliticized ACIP” and that scientists and doctors support him.
No, we do not.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:37 AM

===

RM Wyden asked Kennedy about claims made by the CDC Director Monarez, who he hand-picked and then fired, about his direct interventions in vaccine policies. Kennedy directly said her claims were false and that she lied in this piece. Guessing we'll hear more about that

Grassley asked about misconduct in organ transplants.
Kennedy says he’s investigating.
Kennedy also appointed Jim O’Neill, a man who thinks we should be able to sell our organs, to lead the CDC.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:47 AM

===

Senator Bennet of Colorado points out ACIP member and quack Robert Malone’s numerous lies about vaccines.
RFK Jr. won’t answer if he was aware of these lies.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:53 AM

===

Senator Bennet just asked about ACIP’s next meeting and the vaccines they will discuss.
He says that if RFK Jr. changes the vaccine schedule does he anticipate that fewer children will get vaccinated and should parents be prepared for more outbreaks?
He says ACIP won’t change MMR vaccine recs.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:55 AM

===

BENNET: It's a panel you just put that folks on. They are people with ideas that are completely outside the mainstream
RFK Jr: You mean outside the pharmaceutical paradigm?
BENNET: This is not a podcast. This is the American people's health that's on the line here.

Bill Cassidy (R, Invertebrate):
Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for Operation Warp Speed. Do you agree?
RFK Jr.: Yes
Cassidy: But you just said more people died of the COVID vaccine than COVID.
RFK Jr.: No I didn’t.
Narrator: Yes he did

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 11:00 AM

===

WARNER: Do you accept the fact that 1 million Americans died from covid?
RFK Jr: I don't know how many died
W: You're the secretary of health and human services. You don't have any idea how many Americans died from covid?
RFK Jr: I don't think anybody knows that
W: How can you be that ignorant?

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) September 4, 2025 at 11:18 AM

===

Was not expecting this: Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY), the second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, just told RFK Jr. he is "very concerned" about RFK's leadership and vaccine policies. He's treating him as a hostile witness, asking about ACIP now

— Aaron Fritschner (@fritschner.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 11:27 AM

===

The real story here is that Republicans know the only conceivable chance of getting Trump to give a shit about putting a sociopath in charge of public health is to swaddle it in obsequious praise for Trump and try to get him to see said sociopath as somehow diminishing Trump's glory.

— Greg Sargent (@gregsargent.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 11:50 AM

===

WARREN: Did you tell the head of the CDC that if she refused to sign off on your changes to the childhood vaccine schedule, that she had to resign?
RFK Jr: No. I told her she had to resign because I asked her 'are you a trustworthy person?" and she said no
WARREN: This is not what she has said

[image or embed]

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) September 4, 2025 at 12:11 PM

===

RFK Jr: I'm not gonna recommend a product for which there's no clinical data. Is that what I should be doing?
WARREN: What you should be doing is honoring your promise you made when you were looking to get confirmed in this job, and that is you promised that you would not take vaccines away

[image or embed]

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) September 4, 2025 at 12:12 PM

===

Ron Johnson is having a tantrum about science and says it’s all been “corrupted”.
He is lying about VAERS when he says that the CDC “suddenly” turned against it.
This is utterly and completely false. The CDC has always explained that VAERS CANNOT BE USED TO DRAW CONCLUSIONS ABOUT CAUSALITY.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 11:39 AM

===

Senator Young (R, Indiana) talks about LongCOVID. This is a surprise to me. He asks about clinical trials.
RFK Jr. mentions two doctors whose “treatments” have been treated with extreme skepticism by actual scientists. One of them “treats” people with “ongoing symptoms after COVID vaccination”.

RFK Jr: It's gonna be the biggest infusion of federal dollar into rural healthcare in American history
BERNIE SANDERS: Yeah. You know why? Because you're cutting $150b for rural hospitals, you're putting $50b back. That's not an infusion. That's a loss of $100b.

The last few minutes before the break were very hard to sit through.
Numerous false allegations of corruption in science were made by Ron Johnson and enthusiastically agreed with by Kennedy.
I am stating for the record that if this continues, more violence against scientists will occur.

Warnock to RFK jr: "For the first time, we are seeing deaths of children from measles. We haven't seen that in two decades. We're seeing that under your watch. You are a hazard to the health of the American people."

===

Senator Warnock (D, GA) brings up the CDC shooting. He says prior to the attack the shooter said he was angry about the COVID19 vaccine, are you aware of this?
RFK Jr.: Yes
Warnock: Had you ever been to the CDC as HHS Secretary before the shooting?
RFK Jr.: No

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 12:49 PM

===

Sen Warnock: Did you demand that CDC Director Monarez fire career CDC scientists?
RFK Jr.: Yes
Warnock: Did you tell her to accept the ACIP panel’s recommendations?
RFK Jr.: I told her I didn’t want her to have a role where she signed on to it

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 12:53 PM

===

What this hearing demonstrates, more than anything else I think, is that RFK and co. don't actually have the popular support for their agenda they're claiming, because they have to constantly hedge and side step and claim that they're not doing what they're doing.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:53 AM

===

RFK pretty clearly wants to take vaccines away, but it's also clear to him that he can't just say that.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 10:53 AM

===

My summary of the RFK Jr. hearing:
The danger he poses to the United States was made clear by Democrats.
Two Republican Senators, Cassidy and Tillis, appear to grasp some of the danger.
I do not believe any action will be taken to address the egregious destruction of HHS by RFK Jr.

— Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social) September 4, 2025 at 1:17 PM

      Can’t bear to read this — i know it’s awful, and the most awful part is that the seeds of destruction that RFK Jr, and his enablers, all the Republicans (no, not going to give those two a pass), will not sprout for years.

      There will be one public health emergency and fiasco after another, to continue with this metaphor, the roots will be deep.

      And for most of the victims, there will be no repair possible.

      Turtle covering his turtle ass. Why?

      Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the world during Donald Trump’s second presidency has entered a period of danger, The Guardian reports.

      Said McConnell: “I think this is the most dangerous period since before World War II. There’s certain similarities right now to the 30s.”

      He added: “Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley tariff bill in 1930, widely believed by historians and economists to have taken the depression worldwide. Those who were totally anxious to stay out of all of what was going on in Europe were called ‘America First’. Sound familiar?”

      More: “So what do we have today? North Korea, China, Russia, Iran and Iran’s proxies. They’re very different kinds of countries, but they have one thing in common: They hate us.”

      Lie, lie, lie.  It’s what’s for breakfast for the Trump administration.

      And in addition to all the lies in the videos that AL posted, Erick Erickson is mad because RFK,jr even lied about Erickson’s wife!

      Erick Erickson pushes back on Kennedy, says wife could not get a Covid vaccine.

      Conservative commentator Erick Erickson reiterated in a post on Xthat his wife, who has cancer, could not get a Covid vaccine.

      “Kennedy says I’m wrong, but my wife literally went to get the vaccine and CVS could not give it to her,” Erickson wrote.

      Earlier in the hearing, Sen. Bill Cassidy had read a note from Erickson, who said that HHS would prevent his wife from getting a Covid vaccine. Kennedy said this wasn’t true.

      RFK,jr lies while saying everyone else is lying.  Nothing new here.

      Now that FloriDUH has repealed any vaccine mandates, why don’t they (and the Feds) take the next logical step and get rid of seat belt and car seat mandates?

      I mean if we’re gonna take children back to the good ole’ days, why not do it right?

      In fact, get rid of those restrictive can’t-sell-cigarettes-to-minors laws. Give em something pleasurable to do while they’re contracting typhus.

      The advancement of medical science and medical technology I’d argue has been the one area of advancement the past 100 years that has been the closest to an unmitigated success. To see RFK. Jr basically use the government to make a mockery of that is the one area that will throughly confuse and anger future historians when they write about the rolling catastrophe that is the Trump administration.

      Obviously, many personal failings, but look at JFK’s press conferences and compare and contrast, particularly with the Republicans that followed.  Hell, at this point, W looks better (caught a clip of him in Netflix’s recent documentary series on Katrina).

      Trump could have snagged a Nobel Prize very easily: all he had to do was grab Putin at the meeting in Alaska, and render him to the Hague.

      The only thing that could have gotten Hitler the Nobel Peace Prize is for “killing Hitler”*.  Trump could try that also, too.

      (*yes, I know it’s not posthumous, but Trump might not)

      @Belafon:  It matters, as apparently under current Georgia law (which is where I believe the Ericksons currently live), they aren’t allowing pharmacists to give the new booster.  There is no indication that medical centers are so restricted.  I’m a cancer patient (but not in Georgia), they reflexively offer me a booster just about every time I walk into the clinic.

      Delurking to let you know that you can have your doctor can check your antibody levels for measles, etc, and you can get a booster shot if they are low. I just did this. My doctor said my levels were borderline low, and not something she would typically worry about. But she recommended a booster anyway because she expects more outbreaks and the loss of herd immunity in the next few years.

      The exchange between Warren and Kennedy about the firing of the CDC head was quite something.

      It’s hard to imagine her saying that she was untrustworthy, either in so many words or in anything equivalent to that.  I think what he’s referring to is her telling him she couldn’t do what he wanted her to do, which made her untrustworthy in his eyes because she wasn’t a sycophant.

      Overprescribed vaccines? Fuck man, you really stupid!

      Off topic:

      Energy Secretary Chris Wright: “At its essence, artificial intelligence takes electricity and turns it into intelligence, empowering Americans.”

      Full disclosure: both of my Democratic senators voted to confirm this doofus, one of whom mouthed these words:

      “Chris Wright is a scientist who has dedicated his life to the study and use of energy. He believes in science and supports the research that will deliver the affordable, reliable and clean energy” that will lower costs and make the country more secure, Sen. John Hickenlooper said.

      The COVID vaccine is IN MY ARM! No crazy quack can take it away from me now! Seems like availability in Virginia just turned on like a lightbulb. But not for everyone. The nurse at the clinic said a lot of people were calling about it but they can only get it if they’re over 65 or have a medical condition. (Though it sounds like if a doctor prescribes they won’t second guess, but it’s still an extra step.)

      Steve Brill here makes a point that I think should be emphasized more: RFK Jr. takes advantage of Americans’ justifiable anger about our expensive, bureaucratic, inequitable healthcare system but ignores the real villains.

      …notice the bank shot he’s taking. He’s not going after the real source of that anger, the real establishment. He’s not calling for price controls on drugs the way he did before Trump’s election or price controls on hospitals, medical device makers, or any of the other profiteers in America’s alternate-universe health care economy. He’s going after doctors, researchers, public health officials, and all the other lifesavers, accusing them of all varieties of corruption and malfeasance with claims that have been repeatedly debunked.

      @lowtechcyclist: Mitch is a complete total racist POS who is very happy to see this country return to the 1800s but,hey, I’m glad he’s around for at least a short period of time to see the consequences of his actions.  He can even take credit for the recissions packet since he never kept to senate norms and opened the gateway to completely ripping up.the norms. Take a bow Mitch.

      What Democrats should demand is a package of things that they know the Republicans will not do. Meeting the moment means no dealing, no trade offs, no cooperation. Just say no to anything less than the demands.

      @gene108: Most of my chronic health problems (including the one for which I had to be carved up like a turkey this past spring) can be traced directly to getting hit broadside by an SUV doing 45 in a 25 zone downhill in the rain. I fail to see how any type of diet or exercise would have prevented that.

      I wish Joe Rogan, Stephen Miller’s bald twin would be held to account for bringing fuckface Jr into HHS. I hope Joe Rogan doesn’t have himself or his wife and his kids vaccinated. Live on the wild side Joe you POS. Also breast cancer survivor Casey Desantis follows Dr. Lobotomy’s advice and not get vaccinated and ofcourse not allow her precious kids to get vaccinated.

      Fuck the adults, but the kids should be vaccinated.

      According to veteran Capitol Hill reporter, all but one House Democrats have signed the Massie/Khana Epstein case discharge peition. That includes Texas Reps. Gonzalez and Cuellar who I’d wondered about yesterday.

      California Rep. Eric Swallwell says he’ll sign when he gets back to D.C. next week. There was a death in the family- I believe his mother’s– and that’s why he stayed in California.

      Once Swallwell signs, the petition will still need two more Republican backers.

      @geg6: I only skimmed Josh’s piece  (it’s painful) but it seems like Democractic leaders think this is more like business as usual. I want to sympathize with the impulse to try to limit harm to some vulnerable groups but unfortunately, gene108 has it right even though he could be personally harmed:

      Democrats need to quit shielding people from Republican’s bad policies, and make it clear where the blame lies.
