Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Let’s do what we can to make sure everyone we know sees this.

NEW: Epstein survivors release the most powerful PSA I have ever seen.

Make this go viral so every member of the House of Representatives sees it.

    Thank you, SureLurkalot. And WG.

    I just finished Virginia Gs book, Nobody’s Girl. Excellent. If you’ve never been through something like that, it may be a shocking read. These womens stories are distressing to hear. But silencing them is not ok.

    it’s important for everyone to get a deeper grasp on how profoundly this abuse affects its victims. It’s important to recognize the survivors. For what they live with, and go through, for all the times and ways they (we) have been brave, and overcome a difficult and stormy internal environment, for all the ways we manage to create safety again.
    When you read this book, you get an inkling of it.

    I read in the Australian press

    US President Donald Trump has called on his fellow Republicans in Congress to vote for the release of files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

    So have the files been sanitized to remove all mention of trump? – or ??

    @TS:

    So have the files been sanitized to remove all mention of trump? – or ??

    This possibility is very concerning, since it’s been reported that Patel dispatched a batallion of FBI agents to comb through the files for mentions of Trump.  Are there means whereby any expunctions to remove references to Trump or other GOP figures and skew the remaining references to mentions of Democratic figures?

    @TS: Breaking news on AP

    WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said House Republicans should vote to release files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case, a startling reversal after previously fighting the proposal.

    “We have nothing to hide, and it’s time to move on from this Democrat Hoax perpetrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the Republican Party,” Trump wrote on social media shortly after landing at Joint Base Andrews following a weekend in Florida.

    Democrats and some Republicans have been pushing a measure that would force the Justice Department to make public more documents from the case.

    The president’s shift is an implicit acknowledgement that supporters of the measure have enough votes to pass the House, although it has an unclear future in the Senate.

    And probably means that Thune has guaranteed him that the legislation will not be brought to the Senate floor or at least slow-walked.

    @Scout211: Yeah, there’s some sort of scheme afoot.

    He could, after all, direct the DoJ to release the files himself.  He doesn’t have to wait for Congress to tell him to do so…

    Grr…

    Thanks.

    Best wishes,
    Scott.

    @Scout211:

    And probably means that Thune has guaranteed him that the legislation will not be brought to the Senate floor or slow-walked.

    Probably so, but the public pressure that forced Johnson and enough GOP House members to allow release will very quickly be transferred to balky GOP Senators and leadership, with the difference that 2/3 of the Senate won’t be under the immediate pressure of facing election in 2026

    The game Trump and Bondi may be playing with investigating the possible involvement of D figures in the Epstein files is to put any Ds mentioned in the files in the hot spotlight first, to try to dilute the impact on any revelations of GOP figures as they drip out later.

    Here’s the text of the House bill – HRes 581:

    […]

    “SECTION 1. Short title.

    “This Act may be cited as the ‘Epstein Files Transparency Act’.

    “SEC. 2. Release of documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein.

    “(a) In general.—Not later than 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Attorney General shall, subject to subsection (b), make publicly available in a searchable and downloadable format all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in the possession of the Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Attorneys’ Offices, that relate to:

    “(1) Jeffrey Epstein including all investigations, prosecutions, or custodial matters.

    “(2) Ghislaine Maxwell.

    “(3) Flight logs or travel records, including but not limited to manifests, itineraries, pilot records, and customs or immigration documentation, for any aircraft, vessel, or vehicle owned, operated, or used by Jeffrey Epstein or any related entity.

    “(4) Individuals, including government officials, named or referenced in connection with Epstein’s criminal activities, civil settlements, immunity or plea agreements, or investigatory proceedings.

    “(5) Entities (corporate, nonprofit, academic, or governmental) with known or alleged ties to Epstein’s trafficking or financial networks.

    “(6) Any immunity deals, non-prosecution agreements, plea bargains, or sealed settlements involving Epstein or his associates.

    “(7) Internal DOJ communications, including emails, memos, meeting notes, concerning decisions to charge, not charge, investigate, or decline to investigate Epstein or his associates.

    “(8) All communications, memoranda, directives, logs, or metadata concerning the destruction, deletion, alteration, misplacement, or concealment of documents, recordings, or electronic data related to Epstein, his associates, his detention and death, or any investigative files.

    “(9) Documentation of Epstein’s detention or death, including incident reports, witness interviews, medical examiner files, autopsy reports, and written records detailing the circumstances and cause of death.

    “(b) Prohibited grounds for withholding.—No record shall be withheld, delayed, or redacted on the basis of any of the following:

    “(1) Embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity, including to any government official, public figure, or foreign dignitary.

    “(c) Permitted withholdings.—

    “(1) The Attorney General may withhold or redact the segregable portions of records that—

    “(A) contain personally identifiable information of victims or victims’ personal and medical files and similar files the disclosure of which would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy;

    “(B) depicts or contains child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) as defined under 18 U.S.C. 2256 and prohibited under 18 U.S.C. 2252–2252A;

    “(C) would jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution, provided that such withholding is narrowly tailored and temporary;

    “(D) depicts or contains images of death, physical abuse, or injury of any person; or

    “(E) contain information specifically authorized under criteria established by an Executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy and are in fact properly classified pursuant to such Executive order.

    “(2) All redactions must be accompanied by a written justification published in the Federal Register and submitted to Congress.

    “(3) To the extent that any covered information would otherwise be redacted or withheld as classified information under this section, the Attorney General shall declassify that classified information to the maximum extent possible.

    “(A). If the Attorney General makes a determination that covered information may not be declassified and made available in a manner that protects the national security of the United States, including methods or sources related to national security, the Attorney General shall release an unclassified summary for each of the redacted or withheld classified information.

    “(4) All decisions to classify any covered information after July 1, 2025 shall be published in the Federal Register and submitted to Congress, including the date of classification, the identity of the classifying authority, and an unclassified summary of the justification.

    “SEC. 3. Report to Congress.

    “Within 15 days of completion of the release required under Section 2, the Attorney General shall submit to the House and Senate Committees on the Judiciary a report listing:

    “(1) All categories of records released and withheld.

    “(2) A summary of redactions made, including legal basis.

    “(3) A list of all government officials and politically exposed persons named or referenced in the released materials, with no redactions permitted under subsection (b)(1).”.

    (Emphasis added.)

    Watch what they try to withhold, and how forthcoming they are on trying to hide embarrassing stuff…

    (Of course, this line of thought depends on the House and Senate passing it with veto-proof margins, which seems to be a very high bar at the moment.)

    Grr…

    Best wishes,
    Scott.

    The “game” is pretty simple.

    The DOJ announced, (on DJTdiot’s orderz) a new investigation into the Trump – Epstein Files yesterday.

    DJTdiot calls, late today, for a release of the Trump-Epstein files, as pressure mounts, MAGA divides, QAnon changes tack and ReThugs decide it they want the “Pedo Protector” label.

    On Monday, it will be announced, that because of an open “DOJ “Investigation””, the Trump-Epstein Files can’t be released.

    Far right poised to win Chile’s presidency

    Voters overwhelmingly back conservative candidates in first round amid concerns over crime and immigration

    Ciara Nugent in Buenos Aires Published3 HOURS AGO Updated 09:59

    Veteran far-right politician José Antonio Kast is the favourite to win Chile’s presidency after 70 per cent of voters backed right-leaning candidates in a first-round election, sending him into a run-off against a Communist rival next month.

    …

    A Kast victory would mark a sharp change in direction for Chile, six years after mass protests over inadequate public services and high living costs powered the election of current leftwing president Gabriel Boric, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a second consecutive term.

    Boric’s efforts at social reforms to combat inequality have been eclipsed by an unprecedented wave of organised crime, as gangs from Venezuela and elsewhere arrived in Chile in recent years. Pollsters say crime and immigration, which has surged during Venezuela’s economic collapse, were voters’ top concerns.

    …

    I hope Chile does not get another Milei or Bolsonaro, friendly w/ MAGA. Then again, LATAM countries do seem to swing wildly between Left & Right from election to election.

    Clash Report also had a highlight from an interview of Marjorie Taylor Greene by CNN’s Dana Bash. Greene:

    Marjorie Taylor Greene:

      I think that the right question to ask is: was Jeffrey Epstein working for Israel?

    My take is that Epstein was a freelancer working for himself, but he definitely had ties to Israelis including forme Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Greene has become a rallying point for an “America First, America Only” RepublicRan faction that is sceptcal of or downright hostile to Israel, so I’d say her assertion is smart politics.

    @prostratedragon: The first time I heard that homicide was the leading cause of death for pregnant women in the US, I was surprised and horrified. Now I am just horrified.

I did know Trump would be harder than Reagan. He was always stupider and more spiteful, and liked surrounding himself with competing backstabbers. In fact I wonder who convinced him to hire her?
