Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

Petty moves from a petty man.

“They all knew.”

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Let there be snark.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Consistently wrong since 2002

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Deputinize America shared this with us in an earlier thread today, and I think it’s definitely front-page worthy.

History may not repeat, but it definitely rhymes.

(Verse 1)

Well, come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
He’s got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in old Iran
So put down your phones and pick up a gun
We’re gonna have a whole lot of fun

(Chorus)

And it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn
Next stop is Tehran
And it’s five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We’re all gonna die

(Verse 2)

Well, come on generals, let’s move fast
Your big chance has come at last
Now you can go out and get those Reds
Wait, it’s the Ayatollahs instead
The only good fundamentalist is one that’s dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we’ve finished the job that we’ve begun

(Verse 3)

Well, come on mothers throughout the land
Pack your boys off to the desert sand
Come on fathers, don’t hesitate
Send your sons out before it’s too late
And you can be the first ones on your block
To have your boy come home in a box

(Chorus)

And it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for?
Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn
Next stop is Tehran
And it’s five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain’t no time to wonder why
Whoopee! We’re all gonna die

I cannot think of a single other human being that I wouldn’t have empathy for upon hearing that they (apparently) have shingles.

Speaking of empathy, reposted from downstairs:

      CENTCOM on X

TAMPA, Fla. – As of 4 pm ET, March 2, six U.S. service members have been killed in action. U.S. forces recently recovered the remains of two previously unaccounted for service members from a facility that was struck during Iran’s initial attacks in the region

Major combat operations continue. The identities of the fallen are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin notification.

Making a death announcement on X?  Really CENTCOM?  Ugh.  I can just feel the warm empathy right there.  Maybe they need to learn some emoji that reflects feelings.  Or not.  Ugh.

considering the current source, victim identification (and admittance thereof) is going to take a while, the RW enshittification of the news media means that we have to sort thru new sources for reporting of events.

FWIW, the Wall Street reaction to Trump’s Iran War seems suprisingly “meh” on the first trading day since outbreak of hostilities.  Our retirement stock portfolio was actually up 2 tenths of a percent today.  The daily percentage swings on days when Trump’s tariff tantrums affected the market over the last several months were often on the order of between 5 tenths of a percent to as much as 1.5%.  However, the extent of reaction if and when oil prices spike as a result of the Iran war remain to be seen, but the evidence seems to be that (surprise!) Wall Street’s mix of rational and emotional (investor mood) depends on anticipated economic impact as evaluated by financial types, not any sort of big-picture moral or national strategic factors.

MEANwhile, WaPo informs us that NOW the Mission Objective is “to take out Iran’s ability to threaten American personnel and allies across the Middle East.”

That certainly seems well-defined!  Especially when it comes to a country as small, thinly populated, and industrially undeveloped as Iran, especially one that’s been involved in wars both foreign and domestic pretty damn often recently.

[sigh] Wonder how long THIS one is going to last.  I guess ambiguity gives it staying power AND deniability, so maybe a while.  Or maybe just another cycle or two.  (The others certainly haven’t lasted very long…

@cmorenc: fwiw, such CW as I’ve seen is that The Wisdom Of The Market (blessed be its name) is that we’re gonna have a TACO in fairly short order, ie before any real oil-price effects start to bite.  He’ll “take an off-ramp” or “declare victory and leave.”

As observed elsewhere, the problem with “anticipated economic impact” is that, while economic facts usually take time to change, anticipations can change suddenly and like a stampede.  And then …

Just getting way ahead of the absurdity of what I’ll call the McNamara curve when you’re sending young people off to immiserate, act as killers and to die off in a genuinely stupid and inadvisable conflict of choice.

Savage mockery and asymmetric conflict are about our only available weapons anymore. This is the only peaceful bit, and I always felt like Country Joe stung the assholes more than most.

I do think that there has been, in the past, a shared consensus among members of the US military that they serve an honorable purpose framed by the US national interest, debatably but rationally construed.

Which consensus I expect is being shattered right now. It started months ago with the seed of “don’t give up the ship,”  but it seems likely to me that for many in the service “WTF are we even doing this for” is an easier and more tangible threshold to find than the moral conundra posed by recognizing an illegal order when it comes at them.

TL;DR: Trump is probably alienating more people in unexpected places, than is reflected by his fecally-bad in polls.

By reporting the initial “meh” reaction of Wall Street today, I am not thereby saying that if and when practical economic aftershocks begin affecting ordinary folk, it won’t eventually be reflected negatively by Wall Street and investor types.  All I am saying is that it’s suprirising to compare the *immediate* far stronger reactions of Wall Street to Trump’s tariff vicissitudes than the immediate *meh* reaction to the outbreak of Mideast war involving the US., not that it won’t eventually force Wall Street to negatively react as the economic impacts trickle up to the investment class.

State Department urges Americans in 14 countries to leave immediately

Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar said on X today that the State Department is urging Americans in 14 countries in the Middle East to “DEPART NOW” using commercial transportation “due to serious safety risks.”

The countries included were Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

I’m probably the only one here with a masters degree in that kinda stuff from my days attending as a civilian the USMC Command & Staff College.

I saw that and snorted.  If we’d come up with such a vague, open-ended strategic mission statement (or a level-to-three below that, a “Commanders Intent” statement), we would have been asked if we’d been sleeping during the lectures and study group sessions.

That stuff was pounded into us for a solid year.

Okay, if we’re still around in 50 years, that one will be used as an example of a poor one.

@cmorenc: According to a lucid analysis by Krugman on his Substack today, there aren’t really many direct channels by which the war can have a negative effect on the economy (and by extension on Wall Street). In particular, any oil supply effect will likely be a nothingburger, because the US economy is far less exposed than in 1980.

He points to two indirect channels, though: one is the massively overcapitalized (compared to earnings) stock market, which carries a risk of instability to any shock. The other is the centrality of Dubai and other Gulf States to global commerce, and the problem created if they get effectively blockaded.

I ran across this version of Country Joe’s rag during W’s excursion into the sand. I have no idea who wrote it and I can’t find it again on the internet today. Nevertheless, here’s the AWOL Rag:

Come on Publicans across the land
      Toss a pot to Iraqistan
Come on lobbyists – yer fight too
Cough up a son, or a daughter’ll do
Be the first yer side o’ the street
To jack a leg in the grinder meat!

      [CHORUS]

      And it’s one, two, three
      What are we fightin’ for?
      Don’t ask me I don’t give a damn
      Next stop Eye-raqistan!
      And it’s five, six, seven
      No! No! Guantanamo Gate!
      Now who started this row?
      All Hat! No Cow!
      Whoopie! We’re all AWOL now!

Come on Exxon `n’ git yer thrill
Lay some pipe and send `er the bill!
Abu grab you, Tex’ state pen
      All the same – it’s `murikin!
      We’ll sell `er soul
      Dilate `er hole
      Tank `er up `n’ watch `er roll!

      [CHORUS]

Now sorry y’all for the mess we made
It’s how we figger that poker’s played
      Keep yer stinkin’ Eye-raqi sand
      Don’t you fer’ners understand –
      We’ll all be free

I sheak from experience, having endured 1.5 years of Shingles coming and going.  It worked in 3-4 month cycles, starting out as  what I thought was acne and growing into full blown lesions all over the left side of my face .  They soon spread into my eyes, nostrils and mouth.  The sensation was a combo of a severe burning  feeling along with death like fatigue and general nasty body aches.  At several points in its 3-4 cycles I was sleeping 20 hours/day.  It is the sickest I’ve ever been.

If P3do/pres is dealing with Shingles, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving rapist.

There may be Palestinian Americans in Gaza. There are quite a few in the West Bank. And there might be other Americans employed by hospitals or NGOs.

@anotherlurker: Oh my gosh, that sounds absolutely awful.  Sounds like they didn’t figure out it was shingles for quite awhile?

So sorry you went through that.  I’ll bet it felt like it would never end.

@Just look at that parking lot: Even if you didn’t know the song, you’d look at the list and say, “I’ll guess the song with the word ‘Me‘ in the title.

But I guess you’re going with the pedo song?

@WaterGirl: The shingles vaccine has been out FOR YEARS.  There’s really no excuse for him to have shingles.
