    Perhaps Greece can munster up a counterattack. They have a long way to provolone that they’re a quality side.

    @Amir Khalid: To go way OT here: I was looking at a recipe for fried noodles and one of the ingredients was sawi. Now I have several very good Asian markets in Seattle, but I don’t think I could get it. Would full grown spinach be a good substitute?

    @Amir Khalid: That was the thing for me, too, but remember that you and I are quite distant from the events, both physically and temporally. For those there, there’s a phenomenon whereby people find it easier to condemn the parents, and even imagine them (her specifically) intentionally committing a horrifying crime because it’s easier than dealing with the fact that something so bad could happen to yourself. That you too, could lose your child because of something like wild animal predation when you’re only a few yards away is harder to internalize than the idea that a mother could kill her child for whatever reason.
    I believe that one of the suggested causes for her to supposedly kill the child was post-partum depression after it became widely known in the 1980s, even.

    Well, the Greeks were poor. (I’ll avoid the obvious jokes.) What that does is give the Russians a chance to book their place in the quarter finals with a win today. I’ll save my judgement on the Czech team and their chance of progressing until I’ve seen what the Poles do.

    I think the Czechs have to be the biggest WATB. The fellow rolling around holding his stomach when without any contact was a bit much.

    I hope they get crushed in their next game.

    I live in a predominantly Greek neighborhood in Astoria, NY. Watched the match among increasingly disgusted pensioners and expatriates (even after that Czech defensive miscommunication resulted in a goal for Greece.)

    Their partisan perspective: a poor, transitional team lacking quality forwards; Georgios Samaras in particular is reviled. Karagounis’ missed penalty in the match against Poland, squandering what would have been the lead and perhaps a victory, was a mortal blow.

    The Czechs must now hold Poland to at least a draw in their clash on June 16 to advance to the QFs. (This assumes both Poland and Greece will lose to Russia).

    Something positive for the Greeks would be a better showing by the Syriza leftist coalition in this Sunday’s national legislative election (in order to increase its leverage in forming a coalition government).

    In other news from Hellas, the spokesman for the neofascist Golden Dawn party, who assaulted two female opposition politicians on live television last week, has yet to be apprehended five days after the state prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for the incident. Like a good thug, however, he is now threatening to file a lawsuit for unprovoked defamation by his victims.

    @Lee: If you mean Jiráček, you must have missed the slow motion replay from an angle which showed the Greek’s knee making clear contact with his groin.

    Also, it would be hard to beat Karagounis’ response to a non-kick to the head from Rosický. There were several inches of air between boot and head at least, and Karagounis didn’t stop whining/moaning for ages.

    @Leeds man: Actually, seeing the replay again, Rosický’s boot did brush Karagounis’ hair in the parietal region, but he immediately clutched his face. malakas.

    @handsmile: This sucks… if he is not apprehended promptly he can benefit from delayed prosecution and can still run for office.

    There is really just one solution for these types, but I would not suggest it because there was enough of that sort of problem solving back in the civil war. This is a sort of history that really does not need repeating.

    Jackson Heights is a terrific neighborhood/community, one that I’ve explored primarily for its bountiful culinary options. (A Brazilian recommendation would be much appreciated though.) Its abundantly multi-ethnic population probably explains your ready familiarity with international delicacies. Me and mrs. handsmile have been in Astoria for 8 years: 34th between 30-31 Aves.
