Texas Primary Results – This Should Be Interesting! (and NC!)

Update at 7:45 pm:

I was thinking of Texas, but NC primary is today, too. NC peeps, what are the key primary elections there?

A Win for Texas (and for Voting and Democracy)

(MSNOW)

Republicans and Democrats are locked in epic primary battles to set the stage for November in the Texas Senate race. Sen. John Cornyn is running for a fifth term and faces serious competition from Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico are vying for the Democratic nod to face the winner of the GOP contest. If no candidate nabs a majority of the vote, a runoff will be held on May 26.

BJ peeps in Texas, is there a good site to watch the election returns?

MSNow seems to be the best of the ones that don’t require a login or turning off an ad blocker.

Didn’t know there were 8 candidates for the GOP nom – Cornyn and Paxton are the only ones that make the news this far from Texas.  Certainly increases the chance of needing a runoff if it’s close.

That would give them, what, another two or three months to go at each other’s throats?  After the winner was decided, Dems wouldn’t even need to come up with new attack ads, they could just use the ads that the losing candidate aired against the winner.

Thousands of voters  in Dallas and Williamson counties showed up at the wrong location to vote today, according to the Texas Democratic Party.

“Around one-third of the voters are having problems,” Texas Democratic Party Director Terri Burke said in a phone interview, adding that he believed redistricting and the move to precinct-based voting in the counties contributed to the confusion.

A Dallas County judge has issued an orderordering polling locations in the Democratic primary in Dallas County specifically be kept open two additional hours, from 7 p.m. local time to 9 p.m. local time (that’s from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET), after the Dallas County Democratic Party chairman filed legal action requesting the extension.

Dallas County Elections Communications Director Nick Solorzano told NBC News, “We just got an order telling us to keep the Democratic polling places open until 9 p.m.”

The judge’s chief of staff, Lauren Jenkins, confirmed that because parties run the primaries in Texas, the fact that this request came from the Democratic Party county chairman means it only applies to the Democrats.

And the judge himself, Clay Jenkins, confirmed in a post on X that this only applies to Democrats because Republicans have not asked for similar relief.

So add two hours for the final vote count.

Just one hour, I think, since it only applies to Dallas County, which is on Central time, not the state as a whole, or any of its Mountain Time counties.  By 10pm EST, the polls should be closed statewide.

@Scout211:  The whole system of polling places in Texas is a mess! State law created the county-wide option permitting people to vote in any polling place in their county. But it doesn’t automatically apply to every county, and the rules for early voting and election day are different. Dallas and Williamson counties normally have county-wide voting, but for this primary only, they did not. I volunteer for the Democratic Party’s volunteer assistance hotline, and this was one of our big issues today.

I really have no idea what to expect from TX for the Democratic senate primary.

I can imagine a blowout from either candidate or a pretty close race, which would be a heartbreaker for whichever one lost.  Just no idea.

I am torn between thinking all primaries should be early like TX, and thinking that it’s good that Maine isn’t until June because (hopefully) that allows time for would-be Platner voters to get beyond the “vibes” and realize that he is at least Nazi-adjacent and seemingly not really a Dem.

But then I realize that what I would like is irrelevant!

A left-leaning group to which we belong in our NC county urged us to skip the Dem primary and instead vote in the GOP primary so as to eliminate some godawful Republicans at the one stage at which it is possible to do so. If there are additional counties in which this dynamic applies, it may skew things so as to give an impression that Roy Cooper isn’t doing as well as expected.

Here in Michigan, some good news:  The Dems finally got rid of Michigan’s very own Sinemanchin:  Rep. Karen Whitsett won’t seek another term in state House.

State Rep. Karen Whitsett, D-Detroit, known for her estrangement from the Democratic caucus and her lengthy absences from the Capitol, will not seek another term in the state House, she said March 2.
Whitsett, who was first elected to the House in 2018, told Gongwer News Service and the Michigan Chronicle that she doesn’t plan to ever seek political office again. She said her decision was based on her Christian faith, not politics…
Whitsett, who could not be reached for comment March 2, has been at odds with Democratic positions on abortion and LGBTQ rights and her social media feed frequently features reposts of proponents of Republican President Trump and support for White House initiatives such as the current crackdown on undocumented immigrants… In 2020, Whitsett got a shout-out from Trump and later met with the President after telling the Detroit Free Press she credited her use of hydroxychloroquine — and Trump’s advocacy of the controversial treatment — for saving her in her battle with COVID-19.

Party reaction to Whitsett’s announcement showed that the dissatisfaction between her and Michigan Democrats is mutual.

“Good riddance!” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said on X, replying to a post that said Whitsett would not seek another term.

@Jackie: No, actually all voters had to go to their assigned precinct polling place. They had been allowed to vote anywhere in the county since 2019.  The Republican legislature changed that this year.

Both parties had to agree to keep the county-wide voting this election and the Republican Party refused.

But only the Democrats filed with a judge for more time.

One news story said at one point the county election site went down because so many people were trying to find their precinct.

@Martin: Foushee votes reliably on the left side of the Dem coalition. She is co-sponsoring an Abolish Ice bill. She was at every Dem presser in front of the different Departments/agencies getting defunded by DOGE at the beginning of this mess. You can count on her to vote the right way regardless of the issue. She is not great at retail politics, but she’s a work horse and even in these times has managed to bring money to our district. You sound like an American Priorities flyer. Too much outside money from mystery PACS has been injected into this primary race, in supposed support of both candidates.

@Ella in New Mexico: My mom is an old lady.  All her old lady friends[1] in Fort Worth voted for Crockett.  I can’t blame ’em, even if deep-down, I -personally- fear that Texass is …. Texass, and isn’t going to send a Black woman to Washington.

I can’t blame ’em.  If they send Rep. Crockett to DC as a Senator, it’d be -sweet-.  Really sweet.

@Ella in New Mexico: Just over a third of the vote is in.  And besides sucking at time zones I also geography, but I THINK that the areas where they are having voting issues (and polls open longer) are areas where Jasmine Crockett is likely to do better.

      Do I have that right?

I’ll be happy with either Crockett or Talarico as the nominee. But it’s weird: if someone had designed a candidate to appeal to whatever small handful there are of voters like me (politically progressive liberal Christians), Talarico is surely that candidate. But I just love Crockett, and have been rooting for her for weeks.

Cornyn – Paxton is looking close, and even better, the third candidate is getting 13% of the vote so far.  So the likelihood of a runoff between them is looking pretty damned good right now.  The runoff would be May 26, so nearly three months more for them to knife each other.

I believe the only Mountain-Time places in Texas are Hudspeth and El Paso Counties, the westernmost counties on that map. But Dallas is going to come in an hour after them anyway, what with the (purposeful) GOP-caused confusion. Sigh.

@lowtechcyclist: I like Crockett a lot and I personally want a lot more avowed atheists in government. Having said that, I listened to one long interview with Talarico and I came away from it thinking that he’s a good guy. I am just happy that we have good options for people.

As for the Foushee/Allam race, I didn’t know a thing about it until WaterGirl’s thought experiment post. I read it totally cold, not knowing anything about either person, never even having seen a photo. Commenters who are in the know said that they would vote similarly, with slightly different emphasis in how they spend their energy, and that both would be good.

I love good primaries when there are multiple good candidates. To me, that’s How It’s Supposed To Work, you know? No one should get comfortable in their public service job, Other than things like Nazi tattoo guy…, very rarely do I think there’s a thing that’s disqualifying about most Dems.

Which is not to say that I don’t have strong preferences and what I think are good reasons to prefer one candidate over another. But other voters often feel differently, and their reasons are usually also good. So I don’t get upset when my preferred candidate doesn’t win a primary.

Looking at the Texas results map on the TexasTribune.org home page, I think news organizations need to stop using political/county maps and start using maps that somehow sensibly indicate population/voter density when showing results.  Maybe something similar to this from Census.gov.

Just as “everyone” thinks that Greenland is huge because of the Mercator Projection, “everyone” seeing a sea of red in Texas counties is going to think that “of course Texas is a MAGA state – just look at all that red!11” when we all know that land doesn’t vote, people vote, and people live in cities and metropolitan areas.

When I’m Benevolent Despot, things are going to change!!11

Rep. Dan Crenshaw(R-TX) lost his primary race to state Rep. Steve Toth by a double-digit margin on Tuesday. Toth was supported by Sen Ted Cruz(R-TX) and the Trump-aligned Turning Point Action, according to The Texas Tribune. Trump had refused to endorse Crenshaw’s re-election after the lawmaker failed to go along with Trump’s lie that he won the 2020 general election.

@Jackie: It sounds like it wasn’t just Paxton.  This was planned.  The Secretary of State’s office had the old maps on their website after the recent redistricting so many people who looked up where to vote there were told the wrong polling place.  That is either amazing incompetence or intentional fuckery.

edit: Secretary of State in Texas isn’t an elected position.  Appointed by Governor Abbott.
