Update at 7:45 pm:
I was thinking of Texas, but NC primary is today, too. NC peeps, what are the key primary elections there?
(MSNOW)
Republicans and Democrats are locked in epic primary battles to set the stage for November in the Texas Senate race. Sen. John Cornyn is running for a fifth term and faces serious competition from Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico are vying for the Democratic nod to face the winner of the GOP contest. If no candidate nabs a majority of the vote, a runoff will be held on May 26.
BJ peeps in Texas, is there a good site to watch the election returns?
MSNow seems to be the best of the ones that don’t require a login or turning off an ad blocker.

Baud
Isn’t Illinois tonight too?
(asked and answered) Not tonight.
Suzanne
I would like to hear from any Texas jackals about the general vibes and discussions going on.
West of the Rockies
Are we “rooting” for Paxton because he’s more beatable in the general?
Jackie
@Baud: Texas, Arkansas, and N. Carolina.
jackmac
@Baud:
Illinois is on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.
Baud
@Jackie:
@jackmac:
Thanks.
WaterGirl
@Baud: Better not be, I haven’t voted yet!
I think it’s in 2 weeks. March 17.
Geminid
@Baud: The Illinois primaries are March 17. The GA-14 primary to replace M.T. Green is March 10.
Jackie
@West of the Rockies: Rooting that Paxton and Cornyn are forced into a brutal mega millions$$$ face off in a few months. If neither capture 50%, it will happen.
eta: MAGA Rep. Wesley Hunt jumped into the race late and he’s likely to pull enough votes to force the runoff.
WaterGirl
@West of the Rockies: I am!
WaterGirl
I thought the polls closed at 7 pm, not 9 pm. I probably put this up too early, so as it gets closer to 9 pm I will probably move it to the top post.
WaterGirl
@Jackie:
It seems unlikely that there will need to be a Democratic run-off – what say you TX peeps?
BretH
@WaterGirl:WaterGirl hate to temporarily hijack a thread comment but have you received my story? I have emailed a few times.
Jackie
@WaterGirl: I agree. Most of the drama will be from the MAGAt side tonight :-)
Baud
Both Dem candidates in Texas are good. I hope whoever loses takes on Ted Cruz.
lowtechcyclist
Didn’t know there were 8 candidates for the GOP nom – Cornyn and Paxton are the only ones that make the news this far from Texas. Certainly increases the chance of needing a runoff if it’s close.
That would give them, what, another two or three months to go at each other’s throats? After the winner was decided, Dems wouldn’t even need to come up with new attack ads, they could just use the ads that the losing candidate aired against the winner.
dmsilev
@Jackie: “Root for injuries” is evergreen.
bbleh
@WaterGirl: Yes, polls close 7PM TEXAS time, which in most places is Central (=8 PM EST) and in a few places is Mountain (=9 PM EST). So, you see, it’s ALL of them, Katie!
Jackie
N Carolina polls are closed, so we should start seeing results trickling in soon.
bbleh
@Jackie: well, still a Republican state, so I guess the “T” word is appropriate. (Altho Tillis represented today, gotta say.)
Scout211
Thousands of voters in Dallas and Williamson counties showed up at the wrong location to vote today, according to the Texas Democratic Party.
So add two hours for the final vote count.
Baud
I hope the Dems win.
WaterGirl
@BretH: Funny, I had just sent you email a few minutes ago, before seeing this comment from you.
Just feeling overwhelmed by the awfulness of current events, nothing personal!
WaterGirl
@lowtechcyclist:
“Paid for by Paxton, but I am X and I approve this message”!
WaterGirl
@bbleh: I totally suck at time zones!

I went to see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit perform last night. They are so great.
lowtechcyclist
@Scout211:
Just one hour, I think, since it only applies to Dallas County, which is on Central time, not the state as a whole, or any of its Mountain Time counties. By 10pm EST, the polls should be closed statewide.
TKinNC
NC results will post at er.ncsbe.gov starting at 8:30. Polls closed at 7:30 but , from a press release: State Board Extends Voting at 1 Halifax County Precinct; No Primary Results Will Be Released Statewide Until 8:30 p.m.
Jackie
@Scout211:
So in Dallas County, after the regular poll hours close, we’ll see two more hours of only Dems voting! Hoping for HUGE lines! :-)
Scout211
@lowtechcyclist: Okay, thanks.
But I’m with WaterGirl, that hurt my head. ;-)
lowtechcyclist
@Scout211:
@WaterGirl:
With relatives in Kansas that we visited once or twice a year, and relatives in Los Angeles that we visited every now and then, I got familiar with time zones before I started grade school.
WaterGirl
@Baud: ha!
WaterGirl
@Scout211: You can imagine what that did to my brain!
Sandia Blanca
@Scout211: The whole system of polling places in Texas is a mess! State law created the county-wide option permitting people to vote in any polling place in their county. But it doesn’t automatically apply to every county, and the rules for early voting and election day are different. Dallas and Williamson counties normally have county-wide voting, but for this primary only, they did not. I volunteer for the Democratic Party’s volunteer assistance hotline, and this was one of our big issues today.

@Suzanne: FYI for any Jason Isbell fans, their show on Thursday night in Minneapolis will be streaming live on The Current.
lowtechcyclist
@Sandia Blanca:
Unlike time zones, I’d find that as confusing as hell. I don’t blame the voters for having problems. Switching the rules on where you can vote, just for this one primary – that’s just crazy.
WaterGirl
I really have no idea what to expect from TX for the Democratic senate primary.
I can imagine a blowout from either candidate or a pretty close race, which would be a heartbreaker for whichever one lost. Just no idea.
I am torn between thinking all primaries should be early like TX, and thinking that it’s good that Maine isn’t until June because (hopefully) that allows time for would-be Platner voters to get beyond the “vibes” and realize that he is at least Nazi-adjacent and seemingly not really a Dem.
But then I realize that what I would like is irrelevant!
Sandia Blanca
@lowtechcyclist: We have Texas Republicans to thank for our messed-up election laws.
different-church-lady
Well, no matter who wins it’s the wrong candidate. I am very smart.
Belafon
Because Republicans in Dallas decided to refuse to do joint primaries, many people went to their normal place and had to told to go somewhere else. Because of the confusion, Dallas is keeping the polls open until 9pm central.
bbleh
@different-church-lady: lol subscribe to my crypto investment substack!
Jackie
@Belafon: You’ve got it reversed: it’s the Dems whose voting polls got restricted to specific polling places. Dems alone get the extra voting time in specific counties affected.

Almost 30% of precincts reporting, Foushee leads Allam (NC04) 50.68% to 44.33%

hueyplong
A left-leaning group to which we belong in our NC county urged us to skip the Dem primary and instead vote in the GOP primary so as to eliminate some godawful Republicans at the one stage at which it is possible to do so. If there are additional counties in which this dynamic applies, it may skew things so as to give an impression that Roy Cooper isn’t doing as well as expected.
dc
@hueyplong: Cooper is winning the Dem primary with over 90% of the votes (against five opponents).
Martin
Getting best possible outcome out of TX GOP. Both under 50%, give them another 2 months to blow through GOP donor money to rip each other apart.
Sister Golden Bear
Update from North Carolina:
Context: Last summer, Cunningham, a Democrat, gave the NC GOP the decisive vote to pass a pro-ICE law.
WaterGirl
@dc: I read about the candidates and I’m pretty sure I thought Foushee was far and away better. Anyone here that can tell us more about those two candidates?
Gin & Tonic
@jackmac: Will Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones be there?
hueyplong
@dc: The point isn’t the percentage. It’s the vote total in each party’s primary and the fact that some of the GOP total won’t be there again for them in November.
Martin
@WaterGirl: Foushee is sort of a litmus test for the fate of pro-Israel/AIPAC dems.
Ella in New Mexico
Dammit Crocket was ahead but now it’s looking like Talerico is ahead of her.
Just hearing re: how they do party primaries which lead to tons of folks being turned away from the polls and then an extension of the hours. Also that the Governor is not term limited.
Texas elections have way too much impact natioinally to be so very badly run.
tam1MI
Here in Michigan, some good news: The Dems finally got rid of Michigan’s very own Sinemanchin: Rep. Karen Whitsett won’t seek another term in state House.
lowtechcyclist
@Sandia Blanca:
That suffices to explain it – the rest is just details.
Scout211
@Jackie: No, actually all voters had to go to their assigned precinct polling place. They had been allowed to vote anywhere in the county since 2019. The Republican legislature changed that this year.
Both parties had to agree to keep the county-wide voting this election and the Republican Party refused.
But only the Democrats filed with a judge for more time.
One news story said at one point the county election site went down because so many people were trying to find their precinct.
dc
@Martin: Foushee votes reliably on the left side of the Dem coalition. She is co-sponsoring an Abolish Ice bill. She was at every Dem presser in front of the different Departments/agencies getting defunded by DOGE at the beginning of this mess. You can count on her to vote the right way regardless of the issue. She is not great at retail politics, but she’s a work horse and even in these times has managed to bring money to our district. You sound like an American Priorities flyer. Too much outside money from mystery PACS has been injected into this primary race, in supposed support of both candidates.
Chetan Murthy
@Ella in New Mexico: My mom is an old lady. All her old lady friends[1] in Fort Worth voted for Crockett. I can’t blame ’em, even if deep-down, I -personally- fear that Texass is …. Texass, and isn’t going to send a Black woman to Washington.
I can’t blame ’em. If they send Rep. Crockett to DC as a Senator, it’d be -sweet-. Really sweet.
[1] Most of ’em -white- old ladies.
WaterGirl
@Ella in New Mexico: Just over a third of the vote is in. And besides sucking at time zones I also geography, but I THINK that the areas where they are having voting issues (and polls open longer) are areas where Jasmine Crockett is likely to do better.
Do I have that right?
Chetan Murthy

Listening to Roy Cooper’s acceptance speech… He’s enjoying zinging FFOTUS :-D while celebrating his win.
smike
@Baud:
It doesn’t happen often in Texas, but I guarantee it, and I’m a Texan.
WaterGirl
@Jackie: ooh, do you have a link?
DK
@WaterGirl: Dallas is a Crockett stronghold. Her current rep district is there.
lowtechcyclist
I’ll be happy with either Crockett or Talarico as the nominee. But it’s weird: if someone had designed a candidate to appeal to whatever small handful there are of voters like me (politically progressive liberal Christians), Talarico is surely that candidate. But I just love Crockett, and have been rooting for her for weeks.
Mai Naem mobile
I know this thread is about the primaries but there’s a beautiful full moon out tonight.
lowtechcyclist
Cornyn – Paxton is looking close, and even better, the third candidate is getting 13% of the vote so far. So the likelihood of a runoff between them is looking pretty damned good right now. The runoff would be May 26, so nearly three months more for them to knife each other.
Citizen_X
Doing the Lord’s work, there! Good on ya.
I believe the only Mountain-Time places in Texas are Hudspeth and El Paso Counties, the westernmost counties on that map. But Dallas is going to come in an hour after them anyway, what with the (purposeful) GOP-caused confusion. Sigh.
Jackie
@WaterGirl: Sorry, watched live on MSNOW. It’ll probably be available on YouTube at some point.
Jackie
@lowtechcyclist:
So mark May 26 as must see TV :-D
Another Scott
texastribune.org/ has results for both primaries on the front page. Each around 45% in.
Best wishes,
Scott.
HopefullyNotCassandra
@different-church-lady: Maybe this once, whoever wins is the right candidate and the second place finisher will proceed to beat Ted Cruz decisively in the next Texas senate round.
Would that not be lovely?
WaterGirl
@Mai Naem mobile: Jealous!
We are getting rain, rain, rain.
WaterGirl
@lowtechcyclist: I hope god loves us that much!
Suzanne
@lowtechcyclist: I like Crockett a lot and I personally want a lot more avowed atheists in government. Having said that, I listened to one long interview with Talarico and I came away from it thinking that he’s a good guy. I am just happy that we have good options for people.
As for the Foushee/Allam race, I didn’t know a thing about it until WaterGirl’s thought experiment post. I read it totally cold, not knowing anything about either person, never even having seen a photo. Commenters who are in the know said that they would vote similarly, with slightly different emphasis in how they spend their energy, and that both would be good.
I love good primaries when there are multiple good candidates. To me, that’s How It’s Supposed To Work, you know? No one should get comfortable in their public service job, Other than things like Nazi tattoo guy…, very rarely do I think there’s a thing that’s disqualifying about most Dems.
Which is not to say that I don’t have strong preferences and what I think are good reasons to prefer one candidate over another. But other voters often feel differently, and their reasons are usually also good. So I don’t get upset when my preferred candidate doesn’t win a primary.
Suzanne
@HopefullyNotCassandra: I want to Beat Ted Cruz far more than I have a preference between the Dem candidates.
And when I say “Beat Ted Cruz”, I mean both in the election and with a baseball bat.
smike
@lowtechcyclist: I like both candidates, but I like Talarico because he looks like Colin Jost.
WaterGirl
As you can see, Henry hasn’t been watching the news lately.

@Mai Naem mobile: This morning just before sunrise here there was a lunar eclipse (I missed it). So this is about as full as the Moon ever gets.

@dc: Not arguing against her or her positions – just noting how her race is being judged.
WaterGirl
@Martin: What I’m curious about is… judged where? Twitter, BlueSky, in corporate reporting?
More and more it becomes obvious that a lot of our information sources are crap.
Jackie
@WaterGirl: ❣️
lowtechcyclist
@smike:
I’m so out of touch, I have no idea who Colin Jost is.

@WaterGirl: <BJAfterDark> Wearing only a collar?</BJAfterDark>
Timill
@Jackie: Because they think doing this will hurt Crockett’s chances?
Interesting Name Goes Here
@Timill: Dave Wasserman just called things for Talarico, so I guess that did the trick.
I’m sure this won’t be an issue in November. No sirree, not at all.
WaterGirl
@Timill: exactly!
Jackie
@Jackie: Apparently at one of the polling places, someone neglected to draw a chalk line designating where the last voter standing in line was when the polls closed. Per MSNOW.
Lots of confusion.
Shalimar
Republicans could fuck up a church orgy. Cannot competently manage anything.
Another Scott
Looking at the Texas results map on the TexasTribune.org home page, I think news organizations need to stop using political/county maps and start using maps that somehow sensibly indicate population/voter density when showing results. Maybe something similar to this from Census.gov.
Just as “everyone” thinks that Greenland is huge because of the Mercator Projection, “everyone” seeing a sea of red in Texas counties is going to think that “of course Texas is a MAGA state – just look at all that red!11” when we all know that land doesn’t vote, people vote, and people live in cities and metropolitan areas.
When I’m Benevolent Despot, things are going to change!!11
Best wishes,
Scott.
Jackie
Crockett announced votes won’t be announced tonight due to Paxton’s shenanigans creating chaos in Dallas County’s counting the votes. She also said she wouldn’t speak again tonight.
Edited: All counts between 7-9pm will be separated and may or not be counted.
Paxton is doing the vote stealing for FFOTUS.
Shalimar
@Another Scott: Nuke all the land to make it take up less area?
Melancholy Jaques
@Jackie:
WTF?
Jackie
Shalimar
@Jackie: It sounds like it wasn’t just Paxton. This was planned. The Secretary of State’s office had the old maps on their website after the recent redistricting so many people who looked up where to vote there were told the wrong polling place. That is either amazing incompetence or intentional fuckery.
edit: Secretary of State in Texas isn’t an elected position. Appointed by Governor Abbott.
janesays
@Baud: Cruz isn’t up again until 2030. No U.S. Senate race in Texas in 2028.

@Interesting Name Goes Here: it should be. Ken Paxton did it.

Cornyn 43%-Paxton 40%. They will go to the runoff.
I know we’re supposed to hope Paxton wins because he is easier to beat, but Jesus I hope that slimy piece of shit is voted out of politics forever.
Trivia Man
@Mai Naem mobile: you shoulda seen it before they walked all over it
Jackie
@Shalimar: We already know Paxton plans to cheat his way to victory.
Jackie
Great news from Arkansas!
Sandia Blanca
@Citizen_X: And Georgetown (the Williamson County seat) kept two polling places open ’til 10 p.m. because of the big tangle. Texas–it’s a whole ‘nother country, as they used to say.
Jackie
Cornyn and Paxton get to spend zillions of $$$ in a runoff election :-) Put May 26 on your calendar!
like a metaphor
@WaterGirl: but where did all of his beautiful curly hair go? Did he visit a republican dog groomer or something?
BlueDWarrior
Man it has been awhile.
Anyway, I think Tallarico holds on in TX, but I will be interested in how all the primaries shake out for Congress.
Lyrebird
@Jackie:
Thanks for the updates.
Everything Paxton touches gets corrupted, he is that slimy.
Sounds like Rep. Crockett has made a good choice; can’t find out yet, but I hope Talarico errs on the classy side and also waits until tomorrow before making final statements.
HopefullyNotCassandra
@Jackie: Paxton set the stage. Democrats get to tell the story.
HopefullyNotCassandra
@Jackie: that is lovely news!
Lyrebird
@Lyrebird: Sorry I am too tired – actually I hope Talarico is saying that those votes should be counted either way, & I hope both campaigns can strongly push back against Paxton as well as against Trump.
Good wishes to Jackals in every corner of the country and the world!
Melancholy Jaques
Foushee won by ~1200 votes, just a touch less than 1%. Allam wants a recount.
HopefullyNotCassandra
@Shalimar: that, too, would be lovely.
