They’re not just chucking peanuts at black people at the RNC:
An unscripted moment happened late this afternoon that caused the assembled mainstream media to turn away in the hope that it would disappear. As I was standing in line for a sandwich next to an Italian and a Puerto Rican correspondent, a controversy was unfolding on the floor. The RonPaulites, whose furious devotion to a single idea have made them the Ellen Jamesians of the right, were protesting a decision by RNC officials not to seat members of the Maine delegation, which was split between Paul and Romney supporters following rule changes made just prior to the convention. There were energetic shouts of “Aye!” and “Nay!” as a Puerto Rican party functionary—Zoraida Fonalledas, the chairwoman of the Committee on Permanent Organization—took her turn at the main-stage lectern. As she began speaking in her accented English, some in the crowd started shouting “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!”
They were also yelling go back home:
There is a reason the Romney/Ryan campaign has eagerly embraced racist dogwhistles and lies about welfare. When you are polling at o% with African Americans (and no, that is not a typo) and only slightly better with Latinos, all you’ve got left is angry white people voting for you. Once you realize that, you sort of get used to the fact that some of your base is cutting holes in their pillowcases before they come to the annual convention.

I guess that wingers have a point when they complain about Dems ‘playing the race card’– they, in contrast, can’t play the race card because they are the race card.

GOP POV:
The people who threw stuff at the camerawoman aren’t racist.
They were just physically saying “NUTS!” to CNN.
You Libtards need to learn how to take a joke!
And those people who were chanting “USA!” at the that Puerto Rican BEYOT… woman representative from Puerto Rico, were doing that in appreciation for her, and our big tent!

I’m surprised that some enterprising businessman hasn’t figured out a way to sell Chinese made white hoods with the eye holes already cut at 20 bucks a throw to sell to these morons. He could package them with small nooses at no extra cost.
Romney could do an appearance at his warehouse to tell us all about how this fine American small business owner prospered without any government help, as long as we don’t count the 24/7 police presence that would be required to keep the place from being burned to the ground.

So what keeps Zoraida Fonalledas in the GOP? It makes sense for the rich and white constituency. And I’ve heard that it pays well for the rest of us. Does it pay enough to act witless, clueless, and heartless?

There were two competing chants: “Seat Them Now”, referring to Ron Paul delegates, and “USA”, which is just the Republican go-to chant, used here to drown out the Ron Paul supporters. It was just an unfortunate coincidence, and worse optics, that an accented minority happened to be taking the stage when they started.
If you want to report on racism at the convention, the dude throwing peanuts at a black CNN camerawoman and shouting “this is how we feed animals” is a much better example. Sadly, there is no video.
beltane
I realize we shouldn’t expect better of them, but the mainstream media should be ashamed of themselves for turning away “in the hope it would disappear.” When you have one of two major political parties of the world’s most powerful nation embracing white supremacism to an extent not seen since the 1930s, it is the duty of all supposedly civilized people to at the very least document the f*cking atrocities.
The media has gone from being useless to actively collaborating with these racist losers.

The GOP must be counting on the fact that not many of these Paul backers were going to vote for Romney anyway, otherwise I can’t really understand why they wouldn’t just let Crazy Uncle Ron give a nice little speech, have his 15 minutes of fame, and not go out of their way to piss off his rabid fan base.
ChrisNYC
I saw this yesterday live (the entire Paul ruckus) and watched the vid a few times. I really think the USA chants were to drown out the paulites. I see JC says they were also yelling go home but, I don’t know, that doesn’t even make any sense in the context. All of the reports from the floor (Guardian, etc) were talking about there being real freak out on both sides about the rule thing. They were not even paying attention to the droning from the stage, which was boilerplate “the motion is adopted” stuff. The GOP standard for disruption (hecklers, etc) is to chant USA, just as at Obama rallies people chant O BA MA when people heckle.
Why try to pin them with something that’s dicey when, you know, a federal judge yesterday said, “You are intentionally discriminating against hispanics”? It’s not like there’s not plenty of solid instances of appalling behavior to point out.

The timing of this was pretty ugly, but I’m inclined to buy that they were actually trying to drown out the competing chant of the Paultards trying to get seated.
With that said: it was appallingly rude of both factions to be chanting such that they drowned out someone whose turn it was to speak on the podium. Whatever the context, that lack of respect pretty much speaks for itself.

I’m painting the entire party as racist until the leadership — specifically RRs Boehner, McConnell, Cantor and Priebus — denounce this behavior and the false campaign messages replete with racist dog whistles.
And CNN needs to be removed from the air if they don’t use what happened to their own employee as a jumping off point to initiate a substantive discussion about race in America. No. More “Black in America” specials with Soledad will not cut it.

Now, I can understand that some people might think that the Democrats are too fond of raising taxes, and that federal regulations have grown too fast; I don’t think that’s true, but I can understand that some people might think it is. And, I can only guess, that’s why they stick with the Republicans, because “the Democrats are profligate” or some such crap. And so they look the other way, again and againa and again and again and again and again and again ad infinitum. But Holy Motherfuck of Sweet Jesus, they give up any presumption of good will at this point. If they’re minorities or women, and they find themselves “shocked” or “appalled” by the shit these simians who run the party today throw at them, then, well, shit, they chose to stay with these creeps. I won’t say they deserve to be belittled or mocked or insulted, but it’s awfully hard to feel sorry for them at this point. Harper’s even includes an Editor’s Note to that effect in Hitt’s post, pointing to Buzzfeed’s account of the incident as a Paulite protest.
That said, I’m also not inclined to invest a lot of energy defending a Repulican party that routinely lies and presents us out of context.

CNN and RNC had no plans to report it. If not for Shuster’s tweet, no one woulda probably been the wiser.

The statement that CNN gave to TPM speaks volumes on what they plan to do with the story.

@NCSteve: If these shitheads were caught on tape targetting a non-journalist victim and said victim begged CNN not to air the tape, would it be ethical for CNN to deep six the footage? There is no doubt in my mind that Limbaugh and the Breitbart kids, etc., would do everything they could to turn the story around on the victim.
I’m not saying that CNN is covering up the story for her sake out of the goodness of their hearts. I’m sure there reasons are entirely self-interested. But it is also entirely possible that she would prefer to remain anonymous.

Stewart has found something he loves in Broderism, to his everlasting shame. He’s not allowed in my house anymore.

@beltane:
Historically, the threshold that white conservative bigots need to cross before “mainstream” society will finally confront the fact that there’s a problem is ludicrously high. I don’t think that’s a problem limited to America, but it’s striking just the same.
In direct contrast to the threshold minority activists have to cross, where the simple act of demanding the same rights as white Americans was enough to get MLK on J. Edgar Hoover’s “probably a commie” shit list.

@The Moar You Know:
But would imagine you are still a Colbert fan?
dance around in your bones
I know I am still a Colbert fan – he cracks me up, and none of that false equivalency stuff….unless you are one of those deluded fools who buys his ‘conservative’ schtick.
(I am not talking about YOU, Elizabelle :)

So people are telling me that it’s not an outburst of racism, it’s just the Paultards being screwed out of their earned delegates, and being drowned out by furious nationalistic chanting, and hey, we’re busy fighting, fuck the Puerto Mexican lady up there trying to speak. Do I have that right?
‘Cause that’s much better!
Seriously, hand out some guns to these people.
And fuck that Texas guy wearing a ball cap under a cowboy hat. Frat boy, please!

@Elizabelle: Since way back when he was doing voice work for Adult Swim.
Most importantly, he hasn’t sold out his principles to be one of the “cool kids”, which in a nutshell is what Stewart has done.

If CNN wants to take steps to protect their camerawoman’s identity, I don’t have a problem with that. However, I do want to know the names of the two cretins who thought that throwing peanuts at and African American woman and shouting slurs was accepatble behavior. These people need to be named, shamed and put through wringer in public so that anybody else who might even remotely be entertaining the same idea is dissuded. If you can’t get people to do the right thing out of decency, then let’s have them do it out of fear.

@D0n Camillo:
Alas, we’re at that point, for sure. You’ve got to dealw ith lizard brains with lizard emotions, basic, and primal.
These people are very, very low on the Maslow scale.
D0n Camillo
@Villago Delenda Est: Really, I wish there was a sense of decency to appeal to here but I’ll settle with appealing to their sense of fear. It is utterly unacceptable that someone who is just doing their job should be treated like that. This needs to be made into a much bigger deal. This is 2012. It’s beyond fucked up that an African American should have to worry about walking through a crowd of white people.

@Anatoliĭ Lъudьvigovich Bzyp (formerly Horrendo Slapp, Jimperson Zibb, Duncan Dönitz, Otto Graf von Pfmidtnöchtler-Pízsmőgy, Mumphrey, et al.): This.

@MCA1: yeah, remember all the “Hillary people won’t support Obama” fake drama last time? Now we have the real thing and it’s overlooked.

They were liberals trying to disrupt the convention and give republicans a bad name. Try to keep up with the news so at least you have the facts straight, even if you’re going to lie about the conclusions.

I’m pretty sure that if the New (but sadly not improved) Blah Panther Party were there tossing acorns at Whitey there would be some goddamn (America?) coverage.
Benefit of the doubt, my black azz. What the fuck more do they have to do before we start treating them like the fucking Nazi klan fucks they’ve been acting like for years? Film a lynching picnic? Gas some Jews? Hell, they practically have free reign over gays and women (and boy, aren’t they showing it), now they’re trying for their old standbys for nostalgia’s sake. Fuck that noise. You folks that can’t bring yourselves to believe that a network employing the sonoferic and the delightful d.loosh are merely going for centrist both sides do it street cred,or that this is an in-fighting incident, well it must be nice to be able to “pass” when the shit gets hot (and if they get their way it will get hot as a motherfucker up in here), but for the rest of us we’ll have to go the full Sarah Connor.
The reasonable GOP is gone. Dick Vader killed it. Metrosexual Black AbeLincoln

The reasonable GOP is gone. Dick Vader killed it. Metrosexual Black Abe Lincoln danced on it’s grave. And now those zombie motherfuckers are coming after any and all who don’t share that all-important Anglo-Saxon heritage. That ain’t me, and it ain’t my kids either. So I don’t know why we don’t believe what we’re seeing. As the Giant in Twin Peaks said “It is happening AGAIN.”
And we cannot fucking let it. End of.
